I must learn to drive it off the Turbo ... but heck ....It seems to be similar consumption to the GT3 ... probably really spoilt with the frugal nature of the RS!

OK two weeks on and getting to know the beast ... Turbo Lag ...really what's that? It does not seem to have any .... been driven now by a few experts, first thing they say "Where is the lag" ... not having one before .... I have no idea, thought all Turbo's drove the same ... singleTurbo that is .... Real White Van Man magnet!

Turbo lag is essentially the 930s way of saying it's in the wrong gear: match the revs to the boost curve and you are on your way - fast.
The other factor is that Bob Watson knows a thing or two about building and setting up 930 engines, so any undesirable tendencies will have been given due consideration.
I'm glad to hear that the car is going to be used appropriately!

It was nice to catch up with Des earlier and get the chance to drive his new acquisition..
I have driven a quite a few turbos over the years, both Porsche large single and double blower cars, I have to say this installation is so well executed and seriously entertaining!.
I was more than impressed with the docile nature of the car around town, even so, there are a few pops 'n bangs and the waste gate chatter as you come off of boost!
With the turbo coming out to play at 3500rpm, from then on it comes in hard, without any hesitation at all up to the self imposed 6k rpm redline.
There is just the right amount of noise in the form of "turbo rush" and the scenery appears in the front screen like some science fiction warp factor, yet obviously obeying the speed limits, especially at 30mph through the village on our way back.
Thankfully it was dry, the car was far from intimidating, but driving someone else's tuned turbo, I made sure any braking and gear changes were done in good time in a straight line....I think more than a certain amount of respect may well be due in wet conditions.
The braking and handling of the car are spot on, quite a meaty steering feel as you lightly hold the wheel letting the non pas steering chat with the road surface.
We encountered an unfortunate driver of a Boxster who had already managed to wipe out the front end of their car against the armco of a motorway slip road, which had us scratching our heads as the turbo on boost going past, somehow seemed a safe place to be? [

A couple of snaps from our run out.
Thanks Des for the opportunity to further my air cooled Porsche education! [

The RS fabulous car .... I have developed it, drove it, enjoyed it, had 4 RS over ten years, great cars. I wanted something a little more user friendly for long trips, still air cooled, lightweight, with a huge punch, as I find the curves a science yet to master, straight line grunt was an easy option. I wanted to sell the RS first then buy my next car .... well when I saw this red shiny wide body 930 at Cirencester, it was love at first sight. Such an 80's Icon down to the mobile phone ariel .... it even had a mobile phone. The spec list just went on, £70K spent on the car, never raced or tracked, totally original panel, it was a no brainer....

Running great, still trying to preserve the fuel and drive it normally always pulling on the lead like our mongrel Staffi George, have to rein it back and give a talking to .... still looking for any excuse to go out .. so 80's Iconic, attarcts all kinds of attention from the young lads to unfortunately white van man trying to drive up my exhaust.
Learnt how to flame throw the exhaust lift settle and Bang, fun tunnels and bumper riders!
Der Flame Thrower!

Bit like this one on Bob's rolling road?

Years ago, I followed an Audi Sport quattro too closely down the Finchley Road, and as he backed off for the traffic lights, so my bonnet was enveloped in flame...... fortunately it was a corporate Ford Orion - 1.6i Ghia though!

Nice double bubble .... suppose Bob knows where to stand. Would not want to be kneeling looking at the inner wing![&:]
