Looking for a car...

...says it all

I currently own 996 GT3 (sorry folks.... but it is great car and I'm keeping it) but have started lusting after a 964RS. I don't need a garage queen and have heard the LHD vs RHD pros and cons so in the end I'd probably be happy with either.

I would love a maritime blue one but I guess I can't be too choosy, unless I go down the 9m64 route....

I'm keeping an eye on the places I know (GT Classics, Gmund, Sean Lockyear) but if there's anywhere else I should look or anyone is looking for a good home for their car I'd be grateful to hear.

(There is in fact a maritime one at GTC but it's a pretty hardcore version which I'm not sure is the place to start).

Thanks,

Ian McG

Isn't the red Touring still around ?

I hear that it has been withdrawn from auction a couple of times because it didn't reach it's reserve, it's mechanically good, but now something between a Touring and a Lightweight ?

One or two still advertised on Pistonheads. Black one looks nice? .....Wish I could be of more help!
Why not visit the PCGB track day at Donington on 8th June....will be plenty of us RS guys there.Come and have a chat.

Was hoping to come to Donnington in the GT3 so will take up that suggestion although M1 on a Sunday is no fun.

I do keep an eye Pistonheads but it makes me nervous as I assume there's a lot more tat on there that one might find by word of mouth and/or advice through this forum.

Agree the black one looks decent but why is it that every 964RS in the country and most of the dealers seem to be along way north and I'm south of london....

The black one belongs to Dick Jones and previously to Yoda (I believe). Both members on here. I've met Dick and I'm sure you will find him to be a very genuine fella.

good luck - a 996 gt3 and '64 rs make great bed fellows, they both have their individual merits but importantly if u want one of each they are both quite different. u r right about the north-south divide. i have only every driven one 64 rs which was the car i bought from Paul @ GT Classics. Paul certainly knows his onions, but it might be worth giving the chap at Pink Performance a call too, as he's an enthusiast and might have a sniff as to any cars about to come available.

Hi Ian , I think you've picked the wrong part of the year to satisfy your lust (!) .....most 964RS owners who use their car at trackdays have committed to a season of fun and thrills by now. In any event as Des has been talking the price up for the last 3 years you may not find it cheaper than your Mk1 GT3 in purchase cost- which may not be an issue for you. 6 years ago the cars cost 24-32k for LHD and about 5k more for RHD , and they were all younger and less on the clock as well.
There will be more available after Nov , dont think prices likely to noticeably inflate in the six months till then. Pistonheads is the biggest forum and most likely place for enthusiasts to advertise their cars. North of England is a bastion of common sense and excellent independent garages who know their stuff . My car was previously owned by a southerner but fettled by Tech9 , now routinely serviced by Ninemeister. Tell us more about your reasons for buying and how you intend to use it 'if its going to a good home' [;)]

I can vouch for this car under its previous owner Yoda - was certainly a lovely car and never wanted for anything in its upkeep. If I remember rightly it was looked after by Jaz, so Steve Winter might be a good person to talk to if you are genuinely interested in the car.

Does anyone know anything of the "ferrari yellow" one on pistonheads?

Also is the driving experience of clubsports worth the extra pain and cost - since I want a 100% track car maybe it is - but I still have to get there and Donnington for example is typically a three hour drive from here - even in the GT3 it's a bit tedious. Maybe it's time for a trailer...

Dumb question: does the clubsport have inertial seatbelts - I assume not - if not, is it road legal in the UK - is it insurable?

(by the way contrary to the sig I have been a PCGB member for years)

Ian. Re harnesses - Schroth do a version which is both European road legal and FIA approved, The buckle is a push button affair so as long as you have the bolt in version rather than clip-on, they will pass the MOT test. They sell them as a 4 point, but you can upgrade them to 5 or 6 just by adding the crutch straps.

If you find it tedious in a GT3, you aren't going to like a 964RS, even a standard one. It makes a GT3 seem soft. On that basis, getting atrailer might be a good idea and then you could look for a Cup car as well.

A clubsport or cup is bearable on the road, but only just. I didn't have any problem driving a cup to Spa and back, though it does get a bit noisy especially on some Belgian road surfaces!

I didn't mean the actual GT3 experience is tedious - just the journey - it would be tedious in a Bentley from the south side of the M25 all the way up the M1. I've taken the GT3 all the way to Cornwall and on the motorway double de-clutching down to 4th every now and again and burying the throttle is never going to be tedious.

Part of the reason for buying an RS is the more intimate experience but I just wondered if the Clubsport is a bridge too far so I realise the Gt3 is softer.

Since I probably can't keep another car at home I may end up getting it stored elsewhere and having it delivered - I guess if I'm going that far a cup becomes an option but presumably only on noisy days.

My Cup is MUCH quieter than my RS!

Really it depends on the exhaust set-up.

If you are serious about a Cup PM me.

No not mine!

Ian,
I have pm'ed you about hte yellow car, also I think Jon Billin's car was up for sale recently, I know that he bought his from H&S with help from Paul McLean about the same time as me and that it had a clean bill of health from Paul (GT Classics).

Hope this helps,
Kevin.

GT3RS has both inertial and full harrness'

964RS Clubsport only has full harness' --- which can be a slight nuisance on short journeys.

964RS Lighteight v Clubsport --- the exhaust set-up on both of mine is the same, and I haven't listened to how loud they each are outside (I know at the exhaust the CS is 105dB) --- but inside there is a lot of difference.

The Lightweight is the go-kart version of the GT3 --- smaller, taughter, less lively in the steering and utterly addictive.

The CS is a racing car --- deserving of more negative camber, even more engaging and with the extra stiffening of the welded in cage even more leanable on, the engine and gearbox noise is loud and intoxicating, --- a Lightweight on steroids +. Fully road legal.

My CS has Cup front dampers --- I'm not quite sure what difference that makes but they are MUCH more expensive so ?

The Cup car is around 20mm lower than the Lightweight and CS, has rigid engine mounts and is even less a road car --- so I understand !

I'm not sure I don't prefer both to my GT3RS which feels all over the shop when I first climb into it --- but one quickly re-learns to let go of the steering wheel when it's hunting the cambers on long fast straights !

Where abouts are you ?

As Charles says, it depends on the exhaust. I've got a full standard system on mine and get on pretty much anywhere except Thruxton - it's probably under 100dB.

Wimbledon. As discussed every 964RS on the planet seems to be north of Watford although I've had a PM offering to show me one very local which I'm going to try and do, although sadly it was sold just last week...
