On the clutch I am sure that I added a bit of wear being relatively new to the gear change. However, the car shifts really well with the short shift conversion and I didn't thrash it or drive it hard as I just wanted to settle it in and shake out any issues gradually.
JZ Machtech have the car. I picked JZ Machtech at Pete Spence's (aka Bones) suggestion and I haven't been disappointed. At JZ Dave went over the car. If you haven't met or spoken to Dave, his expertise on the 911 is awesome and he's a big SC enthusiast too. Dave' verdict was that previously the clutch release assembly had frozen and then been damaged by someone applying leverage to it.
260 miles of driving under new ownership was all it took for the roll pin to break completely and bingo, clutch pedal to the floor.
So I guess that suggests tip for something to avoid if you ever find that your clutch release mechanism is stiff or frozen. Applying leverage on the release mechanism against the cross shaft puts too much force into the roll pin that holds the cross shaft in place and can easily break it.
Perhaps someone else can explain the correct procedure?
If you are thinking - well who would do that to the clutch release assembly anyway? Then you might be surprised to know that quite a few sheepish 911 owners have trailered their cars to JZ Machtech as a result of it. According to Dave the relatively large and robust appearance of the cross shaft misleads people into leaning on it with a lever or bar of some description.
Of course I can't claim any special knowledge and readily admit that I might have done the same thing myself, in fact my number 3 bar would have been perfect.... only it wasn't me....
I'm going down the pub.
