You see I would have agreed on almost all you have said until you mentioned 0-40 because I find that 5-40 is better on my 12 year old and k74km engine , I would agree (possibly) if the engine was rebuilt or a new model car (997 say) I used to use 0-40 and also 5-40 M1 in my cars , but since my OPC in France started to service the 993 and use Motul 8100 x-cess 5-40 the car has run far better than on anything else (inluding 5-40 M1) and with better consumption (not that the car was heavy on oil or leaks anyway) This OPC will prefer to use Motul products , but if you insist he will use any approved oil . He has a very busy Porsche racing section also and has been running this business for 40 years . I would stress however , and I beleive this is an important point , all my comments are based on the duty of the car , which in this case is for ROAD use , I do not have any experience on this product on the track , maybe ok , but they do produce some higher spec oils . (Opie are good guys IMOH)

I spoke to a chap called Guy at Opie Oils. Very helpful. He sells most of the oils available in the UK & some from the US as well. He said that the Mobil 1 ZDDP thing is being over-blown & that all manufacturers are cutting Zn & P levels to a degree. He also said it's important to remember that there are other newer anti-wear additives being added.
He said that Silkolene Pro-S was Porsche-Approved & the only reason that it is not now is because Silkolene were bought by Fuchs, who did not choose to pursue approval again for their own reasons - ?cost vs size of market, I don't know.
He said that if you want THE BEST oil, go for a Type V oil with a high % of esters. he said that the hygroscopic question is not an issue & that there are additives to counteract this. He said that these oils are the best, even if your car sits for a week or two between outings.
So there you are. I've come full circle again. Take your pick - I certainly don't want to impose my views on anyone else, just adding a further viewpoint here. I know what's going in my engine shortly and it's not a PAO
Sleep soundly everyone []

I used the on line Opie oils request for recomended oils, they replied with :-
"[FONT=arial"]For the 993 we would recomend a good 5w-40 or 0w-40 full synthetic for all year round use. [FONT=arial"]
Have a look at the Porsche approved oils such as the Fuchs Titan Supersyn 5w-40, Motul 8100 5w-40 and the Mobil1 5w-40."
As they say these are all Porsche approved oils, I have opted for and recieved my Motul 8100 x-cess 5W40 and will be changing it this weekend.
