modern equivalent of the S2 coupe

How about a 130i instead of a 3? Still saloon underpinnings, but you can get a 3-door hatch which is closer in spirit than a 3 series maybe...?

...which outperforms the new (and considerably cheaper) twin-turbo 135i by the merest whisker, and the 135i is hugely cheaper. Looks shite though.

But if we're talking purely performance and losing the practical coupe requirement I can point you at a million and one candidates. The 1 series is a C-sector hatch and no more a candidate than the Golf R32, Audi S3 etc.

No, all 3 have RWD just the other two have FWD also.

The brief is a modern replacement for the S2 and my take on that is a big NA engine in a RWD, purpose built 2+2 coupe shell with decent luggage space.

If we're able to include a turbocharged hatchback that's a hotted up version of something a middle-aged lady has to go to the shops in then surely we can overlook 4WD?

Fair enough, however, I was thinking of the 130i Coupe (just launched) which has a two-door coupe shell, with hatch, and has a 3.0 litre N/A petrol engine (or a 3.0 twin-turbo engine in the 135i). RWD, front engined, German manufacturer.

How close to a 944 do you want to get?? [:)]

(other than it looks vile of course)

3.0 Twin Turbo in something that small sounds like massive overkill []

On paper it sounds great - RWD, Coupe, 2+2, decent engine. However it all changes when you see the pics [:'(]

The new Jaguar XKR:- 2+2 with hatch back, 4.0ltr Supercharged V8 420 bhp 413 lb ft, 0-60 4.9 secs 0-100 11.8 seconds. Comfy cruiser and every day car but with sufficient grip and balance to be fun on track.

XKRR so race pedigree, together with Jaguar racing history. Looks stunning (rear 3/4 at least) and has a badge that doesn't encourage people to regurgitate phlegm on the paint work.

Price comparable with original 944 Turbo in todays money.

I rest my case.

Well the % split probably varies from model to model

you can't beat proper mechanical diffs and the proper quattro system

Didn't know that first bit and can't agree more with the second. The crappy computer aided modern 4wd cars are horrible to drive compared to old mechanical 4wd's where you can choose whether to understeer or oversteer simply by altering the way you enter the bend. No gizmo's needed.

Having owned a mk5 R32 though it annoys me when I hear people saying the haldex system is no good because it does work well and grip is phenomenal!

Sounds like my kind of car, but as you said then you see the pics [:'(][:'(][:'(][:'(][:'(][:'(][:'(]

Have to admit that current Jag XK is a sweet looking motor in a sea of uglyiness.

How comes something made out of Ali is so heavy though?

It's only 150kg more than a 997 2S.....but the Jag has 120 more torques.

All modern cars are heavy in an attempt to stop them killing pedestrians and the occupants. By the time you add big comfy, heated, electric seats; sat nav; traction control; adaptive damping; 20" wheels; premium sound system, a hatch back, and sundry other toys it's not going to be light.

The Jag monocoque is sufficiently rigid that they don't introduce additional strengthening for the soft top. I wonder if this is then lighter than the 911 cab?

Is the XK the one that looks like the love-child of a 1st generation Hyundai Coupe and a current model Fiat Panda?

Yes......[:D]

What I could not live with is the fact that the 21-year-old car on the drive, value a couple of £k, has an ariel integrated in the windscreen. A new XKR has a Halfords extendable ariel on the wing. Like my first Cortina. Is there another premium car available that has this as a styling feature? A triumph of British skill let down by stupid details. Idiots....[:'(]

I've got to say I think it fits right into Neil's "sea of ugliness" description. I've thought that since Clarkson was dribbling all over it at launch and I think it every time I see one on the road - average looking car with a dopey looking front and some tarted up MX5 back lights at the other end. What's to like?

I actually like it a lot and the more I think about it fits my description of a modern S2 quite well i.e. more roomy inside, nicer sounding engine and lower NVH. Still though the external dimensions of modern jags in relation to the interior dimensions are very dissapointing. The boot in an XJ saloon for example is smaller then in a Honda Civic.

Nice try Jag, make it 15K cheaper a bit smaller and 100Kg lighter and they would be on to a winner.

The normal XK version is IMHO much nicer looking then XKR because of all the crass embelishment on the car. Saab have started doing this too with the updated 9-5 and 9-3. It is a trend I hope ends soon.

Of course we would all love the new Maserati GT which for me is the most desirable new car in the past 5 years. Probably more a bit to expensive though as a modern S2.
