My 2019 718 Cayman GTS PDK

Hi Brian, really sorry to hear your experience with DVLA. I have a close relative who went through a similar experience trying to get his licence back after resolution of a complex medical problem. He couldn't get any sensible result from the DVLA, who wouldn't reply to any letters (special delivery included!), wouldn't give an action plan, wouldn't escalate, wouldn't give him a management contact, kept cocking up sending and receiving multiple letters to/from doctors etc. In the end he initiated a formal complaint through the DVLA complaints process and his situation was resolved quickly. Might be worth a try if you haven't already. Hope you get sorted soon. All the best.

Short and sweet.....

with regard DVLA.......formal complaint, local MP and ombudsman

with regard 4 v 6......... action (performance) speaks louder than words (sound)

Brian, I can only begin to guess how angry and frustrated you must be with this. To prevented from doing something is bad enough but for it to be as the result and what appears to be be utter incompetence on the part of bureaucracy is appalling. one wonder upon the calibre of person given such jobs these days.

i would also be very unhappy about the stance taken by your insurers.

i can only hope it can be resolved swiftly and correctly.

Graham

I remember a few years ago there was a big problem with the DVLA dropping people's motorcycle entitlement from their licence when they where renewed. This included a serving police motorcyclist. People affected had to prove they had passed the bike test.....most struggled as they had passed the bike test decades ago..........

DVLA Licensing Debacle

I wish to thank each and everyone of you for your supportive comments, good wishes, and helpful advice regarding my nightmare experience with the DVLA Medical Service. Some of you I have already met personally at various events. Your kind words of support have meant a great deal to me at a time of personal crisis.

Today, I lodged a formal complaint via the DVLA online portal. I stated firmly, and factually, the unacceptable delay in processing what should have been a straight-forward licence renewal application. I have given DVLA 14 days from today to deliver my new licence. Failing that, my local MP will be contacted to request his support in securing the prompt delivery of my new licence and a written apology from DVLA. My local MP has an appropriate name, Edward Mountain. Hopefully he shall descend on DVLA from a great height on my behalf, should it come to that.

For my part, I have done everything correctly and posted my renewal applications and supporting medical documents promptly. DVLA have let me down extremely badly and caused significant personal distress and disruption with this completely unnecessary and avoidable delay.

I shall report back on the result of my formal complaint whenever that is forthcoming.

Brian

Brian,

Someone showing how well the 718GTS goes on the Nordschleife. The poster tracks a GT2RS, Ducati, and a Single Seater and can pedal...

Very good Ralph.

He's not averse to using the kerbs and rumble strips either. Not a bad time considering the yellow flag, parked cars, and traffic.

I wonder which tyres were on his 718 CGTS. Definitely not Cup 2's, with all that squealing, and PS4S N0's don't squeal like that either. My guess is P-Zero N1's.

A graphic with gear and revs would have been helpful.

Thanks for the post. Takes my mind off current woes.

Brian, my fingers are crossed hoping that the DVLA give you the necessary response within 14 days!
The DVLA's own complaints procedure says that Brian should get a full reply within 10 working days.

There are various steps after that (if not happy with the response) but it will hopefully all get resolved at Step 1..

I'm very sorry to hear of your plight Brian. I remember you saying that your driving license was due for renewal when we met at Oulton Park in March. It may be worth emailing julie.lennard@dvla.gov.uk who is the acting chief executive. Even if you don't get a reply dircectly from her, I would imagine your case would be taken up by someone in her team and the matter dealt with swiftly. It has worked for me on several occasions going straight to the top most recently with VW and BT. Good look and I look forward to you getting a positive outcome quickly.

Regards,

Gary

Gary,

Thank you for the helpful tip. I shall certainly email Julie Lennard, the acting CEO regarding this unacceptable delay in renewing my licence.

Today I received from DVLA Licensing, a reply to a letter I sent on 15th April confirming the Section 88 status, and acknowledging my renewal documents were received by DVLA on 01/02/19, and that my case is still under review. I am astonished as to why it taking DVLA so long to approve my licence application.

The Easter bank holiday weekend has also hindered communications.

Following the holiday weekend, I now have a letter dated today from my GP confirming my fitness to drive both my cars. This is purely for insurance purposes, due to falling into Section 88 status. The entire business has become an absolute nightmare.

Brian

Email sent to DVLA CEO today.

I'm hoping that has the desired effect. Rockets and rear ends...........

This has been a traumatic few weeks.

Very much looking forward to getting my GTS back on the road.

Brian

Good luck getting it all sorted Brian.

Not nice to read the anguish we can all feel in your posts compared to your usual musings and effervescent information.

Keep your chin up and take some comfort that you've got that lovely GTS in the garage waiting to cheer you up.

Success!

My formal complaints emailed to DVLA last week have definitely geed things up.

Today I have received written confirmation from DVLA that I have been awarded a 3 year driver's licence for both manual and automatic cars. The driving restrictions in my case are limited to not driving PSV's and heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. Not a problem.

I have been told to expect my new licence within 14 days. Until this is received, I cannot settle the temporary insurance restriction on my Porsche. This is now my urgent priority. Hopefully I shall have this all sorted by the end of next week.

I shall report back on the response to my complaint to the DVLA CEO sent only yesterday. I shall be very interested in the tone of the response.

May my experience with DVLA Medical Service be a warning to all who fall within it's clutches. The form sent by DVLA 3 months before your licence expires is no guarantee of receiving your new licence before the expiry date. Section 88 awaits to cause havoc to your life.

My heartfelt thanks to all who have taken the time to pass on comments of support and goodwill. It really made a difference. Thank you.

Normal service will be resumed shortly........

Brian

Result..!

Good news there Brian. You really would have thought that 3-months is more than sufficent time for the bureaucratic process to progress, but clearly not.

Your persistence paid off in the end, but not before time, and we're all hoping that you'll be back in the GTS driving seat sooner rather than later.

Jeff

Hi Brian, good to hear of progress at last! Depending on the tone of any response from the CEO and how you then feel about it, you could always make a suitable request for compensation (not the same as reimbursement of expenses). I've been surprised in the last few years how often a claim for compensation of a modest amount such as £100 has been immediately stumped up even by banks, insurers, and other sources of maladministration, particularly if you have helped them to demonstrate how they could have done better in cases like yours at a lower cost to themselves. Worth a try if you can be bothered.

All the best.

New Driver's Licence Received

I am delighted to announce that my new 3 year driver's licence arrived in the post today from DVLA. Aviva are also back on board agreeing continuity of my current insurance policy cover inclusive of 2 track days for my 718 CGTS, and my Abarth, on terms exactly as previously agreed. The Section 88 status was the one thing that really spooked Aviva. They obviously have a very robust approach to risk management. Who can blame them I suppose.

I am very impressed with the service received from Marsh Premier Solutions, the broker who arranges insurance cover for both my cars. From the outset, they have been extremely helpful and co-operative. Following the decision of Aviva to temporarily suspend my insurance cover on both cars pending current medical reports, Marsh immediately stepped in to provide complimentary full comprehensive cover for my Abarth during the 7 day Section 88 period. This was a huge relief to me.

Pleased to say I am now back on the road, at least until 2022, by which time I shall probably be stepping down from Porsche ownership. The licence renewal experience was not one I would wish to repeat. The personal stress and disruption caused by the extraordinary long delay, put me in a very dark place for a while. For your interest I'll report back on the outcome of my formal complaint to the DVLA CEO which is currently under investigation.

Once again, may I thank all contributors for your supportive and helpful comments and advice during this sorry saga.

My touring will now recommence with renewed vigour. Plans are already underway for an exciting year ahead, and I am already working towards a future post on this forum comparing a fellow R2 member's Carmine Red 981 Cayman GTS PDK, with my own 718 GTS. Don't worry all you 981 owners, it'll not be written as a 718 benefit. I intend it to be an honest comparison of the technical evolution of the 981 GTS to the current 718 GTS. Both GTS models are mega cars whether in Boxster or Cayman forms. One thing is certain, it'll be on great driver's roads with a scenic backdrop to boot. Watch this space.

So Good to be back in the seat of my Porsche.

Brian
