Thanks Paul, I'm keeping an eye on that one.
Standard cats seem to go for £50 to £100 on ebay but as you know they are very heavy so sending one from London to Cheshire would be a pain for you.
From what I've found out the designtek cat bypasses from Design 911 are £199 and their 100 cell race cats are £299 but I don't know about the quality of those.
The Dansk bypasses are £246 and the 100 cell race cats are £495. My guess is that Dansk would be better quality?

Cheers Paul. I might ask him if he wants to sell the old one. I've been looking at the Hayward and Scott options on their website and you're right that the straight bypass is £140. Their full system with headers including heat exchangers look lovely too! []

Well it's all pretty much disassembled now. Here are some pics of the various components:
Now it's a case of de-coking, cleaning, polishing and re-assembling. The good tins (unlike the one above) and new tins are going off for blast cleaning and powder coating today so that they're ready to go back on the engine after it's been put back together.

On visual inspection he thinks they are in good shape but we'll know more when they go off to be measured this week. Of more concern is that copious amounts of sealing compound that was put on the O ring barrel seals which all needs to be cleaned away. Our only guess is that this was done when it had a minor rebuild a few years ago.

So my question is what have you got on yours and what make would you recommend?
I have a decat pipe and a cup pipe[]
Quite honestly I cant think of a sound I like more than the one that comes from my exhaust[]

I admire your choice Chris....I would have that set up too for the noise but it would scupper my trackdays. So I've decided to put the big silencer back on and a de-cat pipe.

This may be the case for me when I'm happy enough with the work I've done on the car to track it... until then it remains the highlight of my weekend[]
When is your next track day?

BobT
Not been able to find that one Bob, unless it's the one that the chap says he will sell to the first one that bids £180 (it's currently at £155). Anyway, it looks like Unit 11 have found me a good used de-cat for not a lot []

When is your next track day?
Only one booked at the moment is the club day at Silverstone in late July but hope to able to do one at Oulton Park before then once the new engine is run in. Also, trying to decide if I should organize another 964 day for us at Curborough?

It looks like its moving on well. Hopefully the barrels measure up OK. I have a couple of incomplete spare early sets if you need any, just depends if the codes match your though.
Ross
Cheers Ross, that's good to know. It was only yesterday that I realized when browsing PET that barrels and pistons are listed according to chassis numbers and it looked like there were slight differences in specification e.g. weight. Is that right?

The pistons will be marked in weight and diameter groups. Barrels will be marked in diameter and height groups. You should only install three matching height groups per bank of cylinders.
I had Ninemister weight match all my pistons as originally they were out by a few grams, cannot remember the Porsche spec but I think they allow 9grms tolerance.
What condition are your heads in, are you having them overhauled, new guides, refaced etc.

Yes Ross, Unit 11's standard top end overhaul includes; re-facing, new valve guides, new chains and tensioners and all appropriate seals and gaskets (and probably stuff I've forgot). But as you can see mine's gone a whole lot further than that []. They hadn't started full disassembly of the heads when I saw it on Monday but said they looked in pretty good shape.
Thanks for the background on the pistons and barrells. Good to know for my own info but I'm glad I'm leaving it to the experts (they've rebuilt 20+ 964s now plus a host of other 911s).
