My Attempt at a metal wide body build

The original roof skins are spot welded on, fairly simple using a spot weld drill bit to remove the skin, and then weld in the drill holes. If I was filling the hole in the roof with metal I'd tack it in place, and then gas braze the rest
I didn’t really want to remove the screen and I wanted to keep the sunroof opening structure
And my welding skills are limited :( so brazing is not a option agree it’s the way to go if you know what your doing

started the spray booth build
designed so it’s a 4mx4m for painting panels but then extends with a little work to 6.5x4m so will take the full car

cross Flow with IR baking heaters and plenty of lighting

Blimey is this just temporary for one spray job? Wouldn't it be cheaper to get a body shop to paint it?

it was being thrown away only a couple of years old so cost me nothing
i think I’m going to keep it as it doesn’t really use any room.

best price I had was £18k for all bodywork and full Novol bare metal respray but I think DIY will be £3-4K a lot of work and I like doing it myself

£18k!!!! blimey, was it gold plated paint?

I had a very good full body respray on my 996 for around £3.5k, admittedly I did most of the dismantling of the body and removed glass and seals.

Didn't realise the spray booth cost you next to nothing so that is something (y)

I admire your enthusiasm, I will have a go at most mechanical things, but painting is something I've never had the patience of skill for 🫣

18K included sills and wide body work - £3.5K gets you a respray but not back to bare metal - my thoughts were its only paint if its not right just sand it off and do it again 😅 and its quite rewarding
now engine building that I didn't fancy I had Simon Peckham do mine 🙂

I’m the opposite - I’d rather build the engine than paint the car, we should team up :ROFLMAO:

A guy I know used to be a decent painter in a Ford body shop. Saw him a while back and he told me he had painted his Escort RS2000 in his double garage. I think he had sealed it up with polythene sheet and had a fairly basic extraction system rigged up.

the panting isn't that hard as long as the air is dry and the environment is clean -its the prep that takes the time and skill -well at least that's what I'm hoping !!
The booth came of of my works I designed it 4 years ago cost £180K but we now have robotic spray machines so it was scrap and know one wanted to buy it so I had it will be air tight when complete so I'm hoping for a good finish -time will tell

Yes muck the prep up and all sorts of nasties can surface. Will you be aiming for modern day orange peel or a glass like finish.
