My Experience - 9XX KH Racing Chip

ORIGINAL: Eldavo

Although how different can an eBay special be . . . . Haha

The Accel Racing version (on eBay) is an Automation copy (or acopy of another one of the American versions). Somebody else looked into that one a while ago (I'll check back through my mail archives to be sure).

With respect to Klaus and his chosen reseller; it was the statement made about 'product liability insurance' and the website statement with respect to changing the 'Motronic instruction code' (as well as condemning rival products) that were seemingly stretching the story too far. My concern was never about the copying of product; it was simply the misleading of customers that concerned me.

Anyway, I agree with Paul N and feel this thread has reached its natural conclusion, so I shall let it fade into the misty archives of PCGB forum theads past.

Regards,
ANdrew

Andrew (Promax) put one of his chips in the post to me immediately without any payment - a measure of trust for which I am grateful. Jon (9XX) was initially reluctant to take part, saying (quite reasonably) that he was worried I may damage his chip through careless handling (any static discharge would ruin the chip), but said he would think about it and let me know. I can only assume that he was still concerned about the possibility of chip damage and didn't get back to me.

Oli.

For such a short paragraph it really speak's volume's!..

Just as a matter of interest I can say that about 3 years ago I had 2 chips 'read' by someone that had the equipment to do this, and they were different. Not vastly, but certainly not 100% identical. One of them is sold and supposedly made by an Aussie company who have a good reputation and the other by a well known US aftermarket supplier.
I think I have these maps somewhere in the archives if anyone wants to send me a chart of theirs and I would compare it just out of curiosity. From memory the Aussie one ran leaner up top than the US one.

Most chips, unless they have had the code modified are only going to differ by the maps. Most of the maps probably aren't modified so the differences between two independantly developed re-mapped chips for the 944 would probably be quite small.

Sounds like a copout to me, blank eproms cost a couple of quid, and they're not particularly fragile or susceptible to ESD.

I've got the equipment to read and write eproms, so I could tell if they're identical, or make a stack of copies for 'evaluation' ;p Yes I know that's piracy ;).

Sorry to be boring and go back on topic briefly, I just want to know the upcoming results of a longer run in the car, what difference it has made and whether I should spend my money on one!

Guys, we are all speculating about various things. I have no affiliation with either Andrew (Promax) or Jon (9xx), but am aware that there may be more to the story than we currently know. It would be helpful if Jon was to pop up on here and put his side of things, or simply to confirm that the chips have been removed from his website because he is having issues with his supplier.

I agree that from the facts that things look a bit ... unusual, and that Andrew has been exceedingly helpful - both with supplying the chip (supplying car modification parts without asking for payment - superb!) and in the after sales service, all of which have been appreciated - thanks Andrew, it really was appreciated. However, I guess I'd like to hear a bit more from Jon, and don't want to see someone who may have a good explanation besmirched on an internet forum.

Initial impressions are good. I'll be posting more information on this forum as soon as I have some!

From jmg's posting on here he seems to be quite open and honest, so he should be given the benefit of th doubt. He may too be victim of Klaus McCain Hoffman's dubious products and bought them in and distributed them in good faith.

Well I'm glad this topic has stayed in good humour. That is a real positive and having known Jon for many years as a customer, spending time at the garage when he was building my old car I am 100% certain this will have been the case.

Jon is no conman. The worst you could accuse him of is perhaps being a bit Greek (as is his ancestry) in that he is excitable about the products he sells and so more colourful with his descriptions than an English seller might be - they are not just tomato's they are the best tomato's in the world - but he is equally excitable about his work and takes pride in what he does which shows in the quality of his products.

His little extra touches tend to make his cars that bit faster than you expect them to be and over the years he has proved true to his word and his customers.

I have every faith Jon believed his chips were unique and would not have intentionally miss-sold them. Still as above it makes choosing a chip for your car rather easy now[:)]

Jon certainly has a good rep and seems to have done a lot of good work. Had I not started a thread praising the product I would likely have not posted my findings and would have allowed Jon to deal with it.
