At 18,299 miles my car had the 2 year major service done this week together with the fitting of the Porsche recall side intake grills. All were completed successfully. Thankfully the grills are quite far back in the intake ducts and not readily seen from a normal standing viewpoint. A photo is shown below.
The 2 year service includes a geometry check which prompted a strict request from me to the service manager not to adjust the settings, only check them. This plea was adhered to I am pleased to report. My car is now all prepared for the trade-in next month when my new GTS is due to be collected. This week, I received confirmation from Porsche Centre Chester that my new car is currently being assembled on the production line. Having visited the Stuttgart factory only recently, I can visualise the production process as it evolves. I'm getting more excited by the day.
For the duration of my car service which involved an overnight stay in Aberdeen, I was given a complimentary loan car, a 2.0 718 Boxster. This was my first experience of the 2.0 litre 718 and also my first with what was a fairly basic specced car. For example, standard jacked-up suspension, no Sport Chrono or mode switch, and no Power Steering Plus. The first thing that became very apparent was the severe crabbing of the front axles during parking. It was by far the worst I had ever experienced in any Porsche. The tyres were Pirelli P-Zero N1, and the wheels the wider 8.5" & 10.5" Carrera Sport alloys. So severe was the crabbing, my friends even remarked upon it as I was reversing while parking at their house. This severe crabbing seems to be mainly road wheel and steering geometry related. Tyres and road surface are also a factor. Its very disconcerting. The other differences I noticed on this particular 718 Boxster was the fidgety suspension ride and the duller power steering feel. The basic passive suspension in standard ride height doesn't feel as compliant as PASM in normal mode. The reduced steering feel of the road may in part be due to the higher suspension and poor geometry settings on this particular car, exacerbated by the lack of Power Steering Plus. All of these factors made it even more of a pleasure to get my own car back. It really did feel like a completely different car to drive. More precise, poised, responsive, and no wheel crabbing.
