My new RS!!

Hello

As you may have gathered from some of my recent posts I have been looking for a new car for the last couple of months. It is a second car so needn't be practical but the main criteria was that it should be fun. I wanted a car for road use and the odd track day so performance was important. Decison to find a sporty 911 was easy (the only choice really) but it took me a while to work out which one. I looked at the 3.2 CS, 964 and 993 RSs as well as the GT3 (plus a few modified 911s). I got lots of help and good advice (thanks Mel, Vic, Paul, Allan, GT3 boys + many others), and narrowed the choice to one of the RSs - just needed to find a nice example.

Well I found a car and bought it today [:D][:D][:D] - its a black 1992 964 RS with 45k km on the clock. The car is pretty original except for a full bolt in cage, strut brace, Michelin Cup tyres and possibly a chip/filter modification. I had the car inspected today and mechanically it was very good, needs a good clean and tidy up but other than that ready to roll. I have left the car at the specialist to have a service, suspension set up, brake fluid and a couple of other minor items attended to. I am having the front/side section of the cage removed for safety and convenience reasons and am considering removing the rear section as well (know anyone who wants to buy a full bolt in cage ???). I pick the car up tomorrow so will give it a clean over the weekend and can't wait for my first proper drive.

I plan to attend as many events as I can so I look forward to meeting many of you in the future. In the meantime, please excuse the simple questions/comments.

Regards

Welcome Yoda -you know it makes sense!

So we'll see you at Brands at the end of August then??

Isn't Lee Fulford looking for a cage? See separate thread.

Rgds
Mel

I'd be interested if Lee doesn't want it etc.

Otherwise I'll get Uncle Des to arrange a cage for me, as he seemed to know an awful lot about them and looked like he was dying to help. If I can get the car to you, Des, will you arrange for the fitting? Cheers. [;)][:D]

Congratulations Yoda. Hope you enjoy RS motoring.

It sounds like the car from Simon Richards. I have inspected the car and had offered to buy it for stock, but alas I guess not enough. I'd be interested to know what you paid for it and if you email me privately I can also tell you about the car. It came from Tom (H&S) originally.

The full cage is a strange one I've never seen before. Neither matter or heigo or weichers. It runs so close to the B pilars that the 3 point belts are unbolted and then re-bolted to the cage itself. I've never seen this before.

Paul.

The calling of the "LEICTHBAU" was too strong and you have seen the light, the Force is truly with you Young Yoda, you will suddenly notice new powers strange noises and paranormal handling for the Force is strong and you will need to learn quickly, beware the knockers of the "LEICTHBAU" for they do not understand the natural Force and seem to huddle round their water cooled craft, beware of their water and the one who calls himself Gazza. But the force is with you Yoda and you can rely on this Temple to seek further light and guidance...............as always my door is open and free to all........don't hesitate to call for further enlightment....another convert.......

Hi Guys

Lee/Domster - The cage is by a company called Herrmann Motorsport, it is steel and finished in matt black. I have a copy of the ONS certificate (Oberste Nationale Sportkommission) if that means anything to you, has some details and signatures at the bottom.

I have had the side bars removed which makes entry/exit much easier and have left the rest in place for the time being. Let me know if it is of interest as my first inclination is to take it out.

Mel - Will be signing up for events and will definitely see you at Brands.

Paul - Dropped you a mail.

Regards

Hi yoda , my lhd RS is black with similar mods , and I have just bought a full cage to be welded in next week []
If you are going to do mainly track days then I'd advise you keep the cage installed. I ran for a year / 12 track days before coming to the conclusion that this was tempting fate. Then it was an agonising decision over installing an ally cage ( very pretty) or a steel one ( very heavy but very strong) before opting for the steel one made by Heigo. I assume you have harness(es) fitted which are not very convenient for normal road driving but pretty much essential for track especially if the cage remains in place.
I find RS ownership pretty challenging , the car was meant to be driven near the edge , and its just not a smooth soothing machine, especially at low speed with the LSD grinding away and lack of steering lock combined with a small wheel and no power assist making life difficult . I had to pay a lot to buy it then immediately reduced its value by tracking it and fitting boy-racer type accessories , though nothing as dire as Des.....see you at Brands late August.

Keep the cage -it should make the car more taught.

Is Des THAT dire?

So what's dire with Des?

Yoda keep the cage you need it for ROAD & track (I know of at least two drivers who would have been killed on the road without a cage Cup Car and 993RS both with full cages)...........it also looks better...you got an RS Yoda not a Boxster......you will also find yourself getting harnesses if not already......could become a very dire car! Presume you have a strut brace, cup pipe, cat-bypass etc etc........And no Music!

My car is fitted with 2 4 pt harnesses as well as the full steel cage. I thought it would be safer to have it out for road use although I must admit, it isn't very intrusive at all. Some cages I have seen take up a bit of cabin space but this one is really tucked out of the way.

Hi Oldtimer - I know what you mean, it certainly is a challenge. Driving through London after I picked the car up at 5pm on a Friday afternoon, I wondered whether I had picked the right car!! Certainly isn't my first choice for normal duties / driving around town etc. Having said that, I went for a blast early this morning and it all started to make sense - am getting up at 5am on Sunday am to find some good back roads on the way to Guilford.

Hi Des - not going to go too crazy with the car and keep it near standard. It has a Techart strut brace, exhaust system is original (tempted to get something more fruity but will probably restrict the track days I can do) and the hi fi is ............ errrr ...... there somewhere.

Can anyone suggest where I can get a couple of pieces of interior trim that are missing? I need a blanking switch cover for the centre console (middle slot above spoiler control and between hazzard warning and brake light button) plus a pair of the circular disc fittings that go either side of the door handle and pop on to cover the nuts/bolts.

Thanks

Yoda probably the most essential modification YOU MUST DO is stick a Cup Pipe straight on with a cat-bypass.........I GUARANTEE it will transform the feel, noise and performance plus save massive weight on the rear. You should be no more than 105db which will get you in to most track days.DO IT or your money back. Keep the cage, everyone on this Forum are getting them, copying me of course......

If anybody wants to 'borrow' my Cup pipe to try for noise they are welcome; since I've fitted a C2 silencer across the back[:(]

However, it does come with a health warning!! 105-107db -100 cell race cat; Cup pipe; final silencer.

98-101db -100 cell race cat; C2 silencer; final silencer. I don't have to wear ear plugs on track anymore......Which now means I can drive Combe on a 'normal' day, squeeze in at Goodwood on a 'quiet' day and not get black flagged at Bedford......[:D]

Power loss? Barely discernable upto 4200rpm, and then it lets rip as per usual.

But I miss the popping and banging on the over-run.

Also bare in mind it will put the final silencer under more pressure and they have been known to loosen baffles.....

Went for my first real blast this morning (another 5am start!!) and I must say that the car is so responsive and feels very planted. Excellent on some of the sweepers - the suspension set up has made all the difference to how the car feels now. Originally it was a little twitchy, now it seems to be able to hold a much smoother line with no loss of turn in bite. I would recommend this to any one who hasn't had it checked/adjusted in a while.

Also astonished how strong the engine is and love the linear power delivery. I keep having to watch the rev counter to change up as the engine doesn't seem to peak and wants to just carry on. Very tempted to get the exhaust mods just to be able to hear it more!!

There is a really nice section of B-road at Deepcut (nr Chobham, Surrey) which I ran up and down a few times. Been there before on the bike and in other cars and it is always a pleasure. RS felt fantastic, feedback was great and put a huge grin on my face [:D]. What I also noticed was what an enormous effect our poor british road surfaces have. The car was really hunting for grooves and tugging quite hard at the wheels - made it very involving but also quite nervous. Certainly not the best surface/finish for this type of car!! Not sure if it is the set up or the cup tyres but I got the feeling this was worse in my car than it would be in other RSs. Very enjoyable none the less.

I am really looking forward to seeing my parents in Cardiff soon (and the Sunday morning run through the brecon Beacons [;)] ) . If any of you get the chance, it is a place you must visit. Superb scenery, great twisty roads that are very well maintained and very good visibility as there are no hedges. Only thing to bear in mind is that there are often sheep roaming the roads (cliche, but true!!) and are best avoided.

Do you guys have any favourite sections of roads? There must be a website for this, does any one know of one?

Regards

[FONT=Trebuchet MS"]Just make sure you don't get carried away and lose your licence. It won't be PRONTOPRINT sending you a nice little envelope in the snail mail.

These cars only really show their true potential on track. I wouldn't go so far as to say the 964 RS is like a fish out of water on the public road, but when you take one on track it's like Honey I'm Home!

Yoda,

From the description of your area you must be nearby.

I live in Thames Ditton and when the GT3 arrives in October I wouldn't mind some company during the boring running in period. I'm very happy with sparrow fart starts so following a nice sedate 964RS (they are all driven so slowly) might be just the ticket.

Regards

Hi Gary. You are absolutely right, best place is on the track, will be looking to book some days asap. I quite want to get some tuition (I need it) and am looking into a couple of track + tuition days that can be organised. I keep to sensible speeds on the road but that is one of the nice things I like about the 964 that it is still fun without having to go too quickly.

They have to be driven slowly on the road, Kevin. Otherwise yer teeth fall out, yer back locks up, you go deaf and yer piles are aggravated; apart from the fact that one mid corner bump puts you on the wrong side of the road.....I love 'em!!

You will see that as the fountain of all 946RS Knowledge and Guru to the Leicthbau faith that all RS drivers have followed and as the trend setter example with a massive following the Force is with us..........CAGE, CUP PIPE, HARNESSES, CHIP.....it's what the factory left the holes and expected it's a ******* CUP CAR Chassis for!!!!!!!!!! IT'S AN RS ...... RENNSPORT.....kraut for give it a bit of helmet.....I'm certainly not the first to invent these necessary modifications.....they have been doing it in Europe (with factory guidance) since 1991 maybe you need to buy a Boxster and get a Dire Wind Deflector and Cup Holders.........Wakey Wakey.....I tell you what is Dire...kompressors, Turbo conversions........GUILTY AS CHARGED
