My new RS!!

WARNING WARNING WARNING YODA

Your new toy is a track day car (RS) this means you have a very stiff chassis set up designed for smooth black top race circuits, Nurburgring excluded. thus driving on the British Public Road is ALWAYS a compromise. Don't get sucked into the fun and get a false sense of invincibility, many experienced drivers have and ended up with a write off.......beware.......

964RS HEALTH WARNING

DRIVING ON BRITISH PUBLIC ROADS CAN DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH AND WEALTH

Excellent bit of road between Frimely and Pirbright too.....puts a smile on my face every time I "go out to play"!

I have just read with interest all these posts, are the 964RS that good?
Mel and Des I can understand as they are both certified, but I under estimated their preaching powers , their followers appear to be massing.

No Richard, the 964RSs are not that good....they are bad...very bad , even when painted a nice pastel shade like mint green or maritime blue. Fortunately they are kept locked away most of the time while the UK government figures out a solution to protect our green and pleasant land. Speed bumps may yet prevail on our streets if armco and tyre wall and noise regs fail to reduce their numbers on our circuits.

Richard, we are a growing community of like minded souls seeking the truth and the way of the old Dr Porsche who's philosphy still lives with us in the form of the 964 Carrera RS, with whom we pay homage to his idealogy and pure philosphy of simple and trusted engineering. The main criteria being that of saving weight with form and function and driver involvement. Not really since the early 1950's (550) had Porsche produced a true Club racer for both road and track, until the real lightweight 2.7RS rolled off the line (very rare) and then bettered on the modern platform and power by the 964RS lightweight/ClubSport and never to be repeated. To us it's all about feel, involvement, fun, speed, excitement and touching the limit of physics the core values of the Dr........It was a sudden miracle when the 964RS was produced against the wishes of the accountants and Americans, the car was misundertstood by the motoring press at the time but has since evolved into the modern icon of 911 ownership.

There is no other car that gives you the same feel, excitement and involvement, BMW, Ferrari, Lambo etc etc....the 964RS is a world of it's own you are at one with the spirit and soul of Dr Porsche....I can sometimes hear those old sounds of the Abarth Carrera,550,917.......you listen for new ones, whistles, sucking, grinding, chatting, thumping of the suspension, twanging on the steering, bark of the cup pipe, a medley of Porsche Engineering sitting in your own piece of history, never to be repeated.

The design, the final evolvement of the 911, it still looks like a 911 of 1964, with purposeful stance and elegant lines.......simply the best Driving Machine for Drivers....

The following is growing and the word is strong.............but beware, it says RS on the box that's what you get......take it easy on the public highway and be careful with those badgers, leave it for the pure black top where it belongs......praise The 'Leicthbau'

Here endeth The Lesson... [;)]

Richard, I suppose they are best described as an oversized Caterham. Similar rawness (and hideous ride quality!). Not quite as agile as a Caterham weighing half as much, of course, but still very good for a normal sized road car. The real difference is the character. Because the 964RS is so raw, all the 911 characteristics are amplified, from the engine noise to the steering feel. The GT3 is positively subdued and refined as a car, in comparison (although the Mk2 I drove had an equally lovely exhaust note). Even the 993RS seems a bit too easy to drive in comparison, with lighter controls and a little more refinement. The 964RS was also a product of overzealous creation, much like the finest furniture, wine etc. It is an obssessive's dream, with stupid stuff ditched to save grammes. I quite like that mentality myself. Plus it is a bit of a wild animal that takes a bit of taming, and it can be fun trying to avoid the badgers in the wet. It certainly cuts you down to size as a driver, and I like a challenge ;-) I have heard of two or three 996GT3RS owners who have gone back to a 964RS, simply because it is more 'special' to them, for their purposes.

to find out just how good the 964RS is, just ask anyone who's sold one. Invariably they get all upset that you've asked[:mad:]. And will tell you usually with animated hands just how good the car was and how much they regret the day they sold it [:(]. They get withdrawl symptoms and come back and buy another[:)]! There are a few who are happy to leave the car behind and find something new but these are mostly the people who bought the car and never used it for it's intended pirpose! or those who thought the RS would make a great road car (it does'nt) and then got all upset that it did'nt cosset them like their standard car did. Some just don't understand what the letters on the back mean[:D]

RS=Renn Sport

Renn=Race

Sport=Sport(!)

Tks Laurence! I'm beginning to loose count of the number of peolpe I've spoekn to who regret selling their 964RS.........and some have bought back in!

"Even the 993RS seems a bit too easy to drive in comparison, with lighter controls and a little more refinement" Can't help but agree Dom. Had an oppurtunity to drive one a couple of years ago. Whilst I felt instantly at home and comfortable to give it some beans, I also felt I cld put girlfriend in pax seat, load up overnight case, drive to France for a track day, stay overnight in a chateaux hotel and drive back the following day, with the greatest of ease!!

and the current Mrs Spear approves of this behaviour????[;)]

LOL at Matt!

Melv - I was lucky enough to drive the black 993RS owned by Paul (Clubsport) for a few miles on some twisties. Lovely car and with non-intrusive PAS for a PAS car, great gear change, so easy to drive. But I can still see the definite appeal of the 964RS.

Well for what its worth I'm not very good with words unlike Des who obviously missed his vocation in life (whatever he does fo a living).....I absolutely hate the car with a passion...it's quite simply the worst car I have ever owned and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Frankly I get more driving satifaction driving my old Mini cooper sport thingy or my old nail of a TR6...And as for those awfull clutered lines and the dash with its switchgear scattered all over the place...For God's sake ,,dont even get a radio let alone a 10 stack..No power steering, no sound proofing, keep fit windows, no bidet, no sun roof, its as noisey as hell....What is all the fuss about..

Buy a nice new 996 or something

Well what can I say that hasn't already been said - not much, I think Des must have been sipping on a verbal laxative before his very comprehensive, and heart felt summary.

The man does talk (some) sense though so I'm on the look out for some track days. I have booked the PCGB Donington day on 22 Oct so far and looking for others - many are already fullt booked.

Any one thinking of SPA in September with Autotrack - I am pretty keen to book as that is the best circuit I have been to. What other days are people doing?

Domster - I wish the ride quality was as good as a Caterham!! It certainly does feel special though which is why I bought it.

LOL, you are obviously used to those DeDion Caterhams. My arse was desensitised by 22k road miles in two live axle 1700 Supersprints. I had The Samaritans on quick dial in case I came across a mile or two of ridged concrete. Gotta love them tho'!

PS If you didn't get the mail I sent, email me at dom dot colbeck at draftlondon.com, re cage.
