My Ring Weekend

We got back (almost) in 1 piece - that was the first priority [:D]. I got in 12 laps, and am just starting to get the basics right. I'm up to about 20 laps as a driver now after 3 visits - 2 as a passenger & now for the first time with the 944. We stayed at the Tiergarten as usual - highly recommended. The whole 'ring experience is still just amazing - if you haven't been yet, it should be high on your list.

Oh - Hi to Nick and the NE PCGB crew - they arrived at the Pistenklause for dinner on Sunday when I was under the car. I hope you got some laps in on Monday evening [:D]

We went on the RSR trackwalk on Friday night - they ship you round in minibuses & walk you through various sections - well worth the money, although may be a bit too much information for first timers (they do point out the corners you are most likely to die at, so that's fairly useful for newbies [:D]). The track is far more intimidating on foot - less of a fast "A" road, more of a winding mountain road! the gradients are huge & loom up over you - especially places like Flugplatz & Ex Muhle. Many of the corners have huge cambers (not just Karussel).

The weather on Friday had been very wet, so I was very pleased to see Saturday start bright. The track was pretty busy - although nowhere near as bad as last year. There were plenty of closures on Saturday but I still got in 7 laps. The first couple were a bit ragged but it started to come together a bit. I was a bit disappointed with the car's handling - lots of body movement, (more on that later....) but at least I was passing more cars than I was letting past. I had one "moment" through the entrance to miss-hit-miss where I got the lines all wrong & the car got very squirmy & out of shape, but I managed to let the car sort itself out. (I discovered the barriers look very close at that point!). Here's the only pic i can find - Jochen from frozenspeed takes great pictures, but didn't get any of me.

Sunday started wet, & we got there just after 8. I ventured out for a couple of very slow wet laps - I have to admit I bottled it at the top of Fuchsrohre on one lap & coasted down in 5th at about 90... There were no closures at all in the morning - fewer cars & most of the "heroes" don't go out in the wet.

Gradually the dry line appeared & the pace picked up. By lunchtime it was dry & I was starting to push a bit harder. The car still wasn't handling all that well, & the ABS was going mad at some points on the circuit where the tarmac was very bumpy. I thought that maybe the circuit was just generally very bumpy & unsettled the car too much. We had chatted about this the night before, & a mate suggested firming up the dampers, so I thought it was time to give that a go...

I sorted the fronts and o/s rear, and when I got to the n/s rear, I moved the adjuster & the whole shock moved in my hand! - the lower mount had completely parted company from the lower arm!! - pics may follow later. I decided that it wouldn't be very wise to continue - even though I'd probably done a fair few laps in that state. I drove the car back to the hotel, where it took at least 8 of us to (fail to) remove the shocker. I know it's just one bolt, but it is a long one.... At this point, we just lashed up the damper to the suspension arm with a ratchet strap. I had taken the car into ph last week for them to give the car a once-over - particularly underneath to check bushes etc.. so I was a bit disappointed they hadn't spotted this (If there was anything to see at that stage)

The (very rusty) exhaust tip also dropped off somewhere on the circuit - 2 of our party took their mountain bikes & got in a lap on Sunday night - they found it just before mini karussell!

So I ended up driving a broken car back to the UK. It was suprisingly well behaved - although there was a bit of rear wheel steer when you hit a bump at over 100!

Now it's time to save up for the new suspension :( - looking at the options, i could replace the rear leda shocks (concerned that the other one could also let go) & rebuild the fronts, but am very tempted by KW. I could really do without spending the money just now, but I want to do it right.

You will be able to get the rears re-built by GAZ: Leda dont seem interested any longer (although they arent really the same firm). Ive had a similar issue re safety checks.....

Time? Re pictures: have you tried the registration plate seach feature on Ben Lovejoys site?

Thanks Simon - I just spoke to them & it's certainly a much cheaper option :) - any thoughts on rose joints instead of rubber bushes?

wrt pics - I found some more on another site - but the frozenspeed ones are great, & he didn't get me. I didn't time anything - and I'm no driving god (Although maybe I am if I can get a broken car round the 'ring in 1 piece [;)]) Let's just say there were plenty of cars slower than me, and plenty of quicker ones [:D] - I'd hope to be sub 10 mins anyway [:D][:D]

there's a few more on this site - no matches on Ben's site though. I like the first one - almost tempted to buy it!

Unlucky: I even found pictures of me / my Felicia on last years Scumball300 Rally!

Spherical bearings are much superior to rubber bushings, but they dont suit a road car (and even if they were for you, then theyd need frequent replacement).

David Yu has been posting on the evo mag forum about a ring trip over the weekend. Sounds like you were at the same session. (Grey R35 GTR with GO02 LLA reggie plate ( "Godzilla" ) )

So did the 360 get past then?
Of course not........

ETA of course you'd just blown him into the weeds on the previous corner.

I'll leave that to your imagination [;)]

Mik - yes - I met Mr Yu on the track walk on Friday & at various times over the weekend. I really like the look of the GTR in the metal - but it is very wide! - I bumped into him at the filling station in Adenau & had to squeeze my car right up to the pump so he could get in as well.

On that thread he says he's done over 130 laps & doesn't know the lines yet - I wonder what he's been doing? I have friends who have been pretty quick after 20. One of our party has just passed 100, and not much goes past his Integra. (Admittedly there is a whole world of difference between a 100 lap driver and a pro - and the best drivers are still way quicker.) He said he saw the GTR holding up a whole line of traffic. - I let him through though

car is sulking now - won't start [:(] raining too hard to try & fix it.

I thnk it wanted to stay at the ring [:D]

There are people that I know that have been racing in 996/7 Cup cars for several years that are still dont "know" lines.
I've done 200+laps of the place I still couldn't describe the line for every corner to anyone that asks. I have also changed cars several times over those 200 laps and with each car comes a whole new set of lines.

I can squeeze a sub 9min lap out of the Cordoba, but the first time I drove the M3 for the VLN my lap time was worse than terrible, it took me the best part of 10 laps to get my head into the idea of driving the circuit with 300bhp instead of 150bhp. relearning track positions for LHD against what I knew in the RHD and changing the way I dealt with everysingle one of the corners for the RWD vs FWD lines.

That said.. Mr Yu has been known to be a moving roadblock in the past!

I know what you mean Lali, but there are "approximate" lines that work pretty well for most things - I guess it's also a bit different as you move up the power scale as things happen much quicker, & bits that were flat suddenly aren't (I found this at Donington when I got the 944). A few laps with experienced ringers is a great help.

Mr Yu said on the evo thread he doesn't commit to the blind exits etc..so that slows you down all over the place! Part of a quick lap is just having the balls to keep your foot in through some sections, even when you can't see what's coming - I found a few places already where I know that I can gain on other drivers who are a bit more cautious. Other bits I still don't know too well see me dropping back from the regulars quite quickly.

Of course I also have the "broken car" excuse - I'd obviously be a lot faster with 4 shock absorbers connected [;)]

Well now you can see for yourself. [:D]

Taken from inside a modified MCoupe apparently. You can see he's fast in some areas an circumspect in others - appears to miss some apexes by miles but I think he may be taking a wide line to confirm things are clear ahead (?)

Sod the lines, just listen to the sound of that BMW engine - fabulous. If only 944s sounded like that...[;)]

he's fast in a straight line [:D] as for the rest.....

- anyway, I think that's enough about him- this is MY thread [:D][:D]

All public laps should be driven with "EXTREME" caution. There are a fair few closed circuit events if you want to drive a commited lap. As you said there are plenty of very cautios people out there and there are even more clueless people out there. I've seen plenty of people get lost in the country side and approach crests on the wrong side of the track and that always ends the same way.. disaster! ...and dont get me started on the bikers!!

..it's not going to stop me driving over next week for a couple of sessions around the RMA Spa trip though [;)][:D][:D]

There is a Porsche Only trackday being organised by Manthey Racing in june... but exclusivity comes at a price... a feckin big price!
