My Ring Weekend

Ed, great write up, i'm jealous. I'm sick of things getting in my way of doing more trackdays and a ring trip is one of the principal reasons for buying my car in the first place. Bad luck on the shock absorber thing - shame it wasn't spotted beforehand like you say, though to be fair to PH it may have not failed at that time and I know from experience that cracks can be invisible to the naked eye especially when the crack edges are being forced together rather than pulled apart. Funny though - i've now heard of a number of primary failures of Leda units. May not be down to the units themselves but they do seem to be rather more susceptable to failure than other aftermarket suspension units.

Regarding the KW - I suppose since your car has already been lowered the installation should be a fairly straight forward DIY job followed by a geometry reset, so you could do it for minimum cost. Go on - you know you want to!!

All public laps should be driven with "EXTREME" caution.

Maybe one man's "extreme caution" is another man's "caution to the wind" - when you look at it too hard, driving at the 'ring, on TF or trackdays, is a pretty crazy thing to do. (not quite as crazy as racing - did you see that Viper vs GT3 vid on Bridge to Gantry?). I agree that you need a much bigger safety margin on a TF day than on most UK trackdays, but if you drove within your sightlines, you'd be doing 30mph half the time!

Totally agree about bikes - Maybe the best sound at the 'ring is "The Nordschleife is open only for cars" [:D]

Oh - and while we're on about crazy stuff - this new card is barmy!

Sounds a great trip Ed despite the problem. The breakage seems similar to the one that happened a few years back to another owner. I'd be intrigued to see a picture when you're able to get round to it and be interested to know what you do for replacements and how they work out.

Why don't you come with us next year Peter? [:D]

I have decided I am going to send the rears to Gaz for a re-build - I will get them to replace the bottom mount on the other damper as well. Much as I like shiny new toys, I really shouldn't be spending on KW's when there's a perfectly good option for about £1400 less! I might get the fronts rebuilt - although I only paid for an alignment 2 weeks ago [8|], and I don't think they are in desparate need yet...so maybe that's one for next year.

Pics to come when I get the car in the air (did I tell you my jack failed as well? [:(])

Sounds like a good idea Ed, I suspect I'll be taking mine to Gaz when I want them revalved next (although I'm not so convinced I need the stiffer springs/dampers that I thought I did as the recent weight reduction has helped enormously).

I could be very tempted to join you next year, but it will all depend upon whether I'm able to take a few days off work.

I am going in June with these guys http://www.nurburgringuk.com/ its an escorted tour with accomodation and ferries included, just thought i would mention it on here just incase anyone fancies tagging along, its really good value,if some 944s came along it would be brilliant[:)]
P.S Sorry to mention this on someone elses thread,i just thought it was relevant if people were thinking of going at some point after reading the main thread.
P.P.S The guys name is Dino.

...If anyone is thinking of going, (and I'd thoroughly recommend it ) just make sure you have insurance when you go!

you need, as a minimum, third party cover. My previous policy specifically excluded the nurburgring. Many have clauses referring to racetracks - I know all about it being a toll road on TF days & subject to German traffic laws, but you need to understand very clearly how or if you are covered.

ADAC cover is also very good - they recover for free, even from the 'ring (no-one else will) 79.5 euros for a year's european wide breakdown cover is pretty good - also includes UK

Oh - Hi to Nick and the NE PCGB crew - they arrived at the Pistenklause for dinner on Sunday when I was under the car. I hope you got some laps in on Monday evening [:D]

Hi Ed, thanks for taking the time out to have a chat on Sunday night, some good advice there. Out of the four of us there was only one of us that ventured out [&:] I'm afraid there was a few to many max power numpties about for my liking and so many bikers I wasn't willing to risk the 911 or me for that matter and then the ambulance went out just as we were leaving which told me I made the right decision.
Still enjoyed it though, an excellent trip and I dare say I will go back one day and who knows [:D]

Cheers

Forgot to mention, the ring weekend i mentioned is £329 all in,i have no links with it(other than i'm going!) just was wondering if anyone from here fancied it....?[:)]

Me to but my car is going in for some work next week and some more planned for later this year so that's my car budget blown. Unfortunately no mods - it's all repairs, maintenance and preventive work. I'm determined to get out there next year though.

Oh now that is tempting, but I'm about to start a new job so can't really..

Just got back last night it went something like this.....
After a final fiddle by Roger (Promax) on Thursday,(i had the oil changed for some good stuff/filter,brakes checked, boost pipes checked for leaks and done up extra securely, new plugs and various other little bits and bobs, recent TR888s shod on my freshly cleaned and shiny after being carbon metallic brake dust encrusted 16 inchers...i set of early on Friday morning and met up with the organiser at a petrol station in Dover and met the other guys on the trip,we caught the ferry had a hot and am sure very healthy...ahem fryup on the ferry.Havn't been on the ferry for years and it feels more adventurous than the tunnel, they let me go on with the lorrys as my car is pretty low which was good.
We were all fueled up so we drove in convoy following the organiser "Dino"(Nurburgring experience) who did all the navigating and we followed him like baby chicks through france and belgium,we pulled off the motorway just after Spa (francochamps) and we went on some of the coolest quietest roads with lovely bends and had real fun on them (in a safe manner of course)and very soon it seemed pulled up at our hotel/guesthouse place of rest for the weekend. We got checked in the hotel owner was English and very freindly and checked us in.My room was small simple but very new, spotless with its own little bathroom nice little view aswell,it was most importantly right next to the track so i awoke next morning(after a great meal and one or two beers..) with the sound of race cars which was very atmospheric. On the Saturday we had a look around and went to a viewpoint to watch the racing, visted Adenau and another town aswell did some more very cool road driving through the hillside and went out for more beers and a lovely meal that evening.
The next morning we went down to the track bought our "laps" i got eight (around 149 euros i think?...)and i went out,it was a bit more hairy than the organised trackdays that i have been on, as there were bikes out there and some very quick cars of all shapes and sizes (lots of Porsches of course) and did 5 laps progressively getting quicker(relative to me- still very slow!) but just trying to get round smoothly and not get in anyones way as i really like my car the way it is...I was not in any way quick as its a very humbling place as the track is enormous( but very beautiful). The car went lovely ( i was a bit worried about exhaust noise as it is meant to be 95db limit but i drove around the pits on nearly no throttle and idled up to the electronic machine that you swipe your ticket card on so as not to draw any extra attention from the ring people with noise meters..) There were a few stoppages due to people coming off after i came in but i spent a few hours walking round looking at all the cars talking with the group, did some laps with Dino in his M3 that was great ....(the guy can pedal it very well indeed, very smooth and calm and very quick..)A couple of the guys found spaces with the "Ring taxi" and had a fast lap with Sabine Shmidt who was lovely and posed with them and some other volounteers from our group for photos,by the end of the day i did my remaining 3 laps and called it a day happy that it all went smoothly.Went out for another lovely meal in the evening and exchanged stories and had a real laugh viewing photos on a laptop taken by one of our group who was an avid photographer (he is sending me some pics later that i will try and post on here)But it was a great few days gave the car a thorough spanking when i could(didn't miss a beat) the KWs showed themselves to be superb over the country roads and on the track the car stayed perfectly composed and you could feel the dampers doing their job,the carbon metalic brake pads worked great aswell very pleased with the car and am more in love with her than ever before, i just need to be faster myself.Got back home last night and slept really well,it was a really well run and hilarious weekend lots of driving and laughing got the true flavour of the place, thinking of jumping on the September one.......[8|]Hopefully be able to post a couple of pics later..

Sounds like you had a great time - It's like nowhere else on earth [:D]

one question - what did you do for insurance? I know it's a very difficult area at the moment - many UK insurers exclude it explicitly, and there's a recent ombudsman ruling upholding the sort of wording that excludes "prepared course" or "race track" for nurburgring TF days.

I managed to find a "classic" insurer who were prepared to cover me.
