New 944 Owner

Good Evening John!

I'm loving finding out all about the 944 specs. The boot mechanism is now very smooth by the way.
Ordered my central locking arms today. £1.38 + VAT, and they are going to post them to me for free. Can't ask fairer than that.
I'm now going to cherry pick the next job off the list.

Cheers,
Jevon

Another angle - slight mod to the front!

Welcome on board and nice car !

Ref. oil, check the level when it's cold & level and all the oil has drained down. With the 944 the oil filler allows you to pour oil straight into the sump (most cars its via the camshafts) so if the level is low you can top it up and see the difference in ~ 1min.

With regard to the trip meter, its the small button (disguised as an air vent) just to the left of the dashboard !

BTW you should get a reasonable MPG from your turbo subject to how you drive it. Reckon on ~ 200 miles from a full tank for hard driving, about 350/400 for gentle cruising. = 80L tank =13.6 Gallons.

Yours

Chris

If you look carefully at the grill for the vents just to the left of the instrument cluster you'll see that what appears to be one of the slats is actually a cunningly disguised button which resets the trip counter. DON'T press it whilst the car is moving as this breaks things.

Masher - if you upload to photobucket (which is what i did with that image) and then use the image button. It's not that intuitive and I did post a guide to this once. Will try and find it.

Actually ths thread looks useful

that looks a very interesting car - and hasn't ever surfaced on this forum before. I'm looking forward to seeing more pictures and possibly having a poke around it on a trackday. Do you know who did all the work on it?

We're all at Bedford on the 20th May - but not the 27th.

as chris said, the turbo isn't bad on fuel on the road. it does go through it at quite a rate on the track.

Dooh. I meant the 20th May. Also doing next weekend hence the confusion brought about by a new car. You know how it is!

So how is it to drive mate? Engine from redtek sounds fruity indeed

Based on the 100 road miles I've done I'd say rough at low revs and when just started and ballistic on full boost. The fact that there is no sound deadening adds to the raw feel to the car. Chassis feels very compliant on straights and given this characteristic, it is a surprise how well it 'digs in' on the corners to give a greater level of grip than the feeling on the straights might lead you to believe. Clearly track driving will give a more useful analysis... That's next weekend.

The engine has only done approx 3000 miles since the full rebuild and runs on Motec engine management (hence the low speed roughness?) so I imagine things may change a bit with a few more miles and a service.

Went to Bedford on the way home to reassure myself it would pass... 96db so only induction noise can spoil my fun!

Cheers

Another quick question. The car has 993 17" wheels. Any advice on tyre pressures?
Thanks
Mick

Nice car!

It's good to see the mileage some people get out of their 951s. I was thinking that 360 miles was a little on the thirsty side for my car to a tank!

Regarding tyre pressures this varies. I was told via a specialist to go with 36PSI all round with cold tyres, the previous owner preferred putting in 32PSI.

What tyres is it running?

You can probably get away with a little bit less than 36psi (hot) on the track if you're using track spec rubber. I run my S2 in the low 30's on 17" AD08's

It's easy to tweak at the track so worth experimenting. Too much front pressure just loses grip & makes the tyres squeal. Too little & you might get the tyre rolling onto the sidewall

Tyres are 225/45/17 front and 255/40/17 rear. Toyo T1. Just noticed the car rides with the mother of all spacers - look like about 25 to 30 mm. Maybe 32 to 34 psi all round for the tyres?

Ref the question of resetting the trip meter - the button has been broken off mine which offers me an excuse for not finding it earlier.

Can't wait for the 20th May and meeting many of you and finding out more about 944's
Cheers,
Mick

maybe an early offset car then? no abs?

if so there's an option to run some nice deep dish wheels - fuchs maybe?

The car is a 1986 model. I think the spacers are to achieve 2 things:
1. Counter the 911 offsets of 55ish vs 944 offset of 15 to 20 (please correct me if I'm wrong)
2. To push out the wheels to the absolute limit of the arches (my finger just fits between the tyre and the arch at the rear.

It's a track car do I guess a wider track is typically regarded as a better thing. Don't know what the wheel bearings wil think of it long term though.

Cheers
Mick

A 1986 series two will have come with 7"x15" wheels which had a 23.3mm offset. ET15s will fit on the back though...
