New 944 Owner

Thanks folks. I'll definitely come along to the NE section meet! Looks like I only just missed this months.

That little grille on the dash, left of the clock, has a tiny break in mine. That'll drive my car interior focused OCD utterly mad. Anyone know what that is and if you can get them?

Then if you go to the "Fast Part Finder" on Design 911's website and type in the part number you'll get an up-to-date(ish) price too.

If you order bits from Newcastle OPC and pay over the phone, Ged will usually bring them to the monthly meeting for you too (and if you join the club you get a discount on parts too).
 
The oil pressure gauge can also read at max if the wiring connections are transposed on it's terminals.
 
That little grill by the clock is the cover in front of the 'sniffer fan' (I think that's the right term?) for climate control. I'd guess you can still get from OPC for little money. It twists off - counter-clockwise I think

Id be worried about what is under the aftermarket sills.

I was worried too, but the guy sent me a full picture documentation of the work he did on them.

Before he did the work they were awful, with holes you could put your hand through! Talking about the outer sills mind you, the inners are fine.

He cut away all the bad metal and replaced it with good metal, coating the inside with waxoyl and the outside with stonechip. He's also a long time member of another forum I go to and is well trusted, I would be very surprised indeed if the sills were bad, he's a very good and experienced welder.
 
You can make a tool for the pig nose nuts from a spare socket. Just file it down on the tangent if you see what I mean to leave two tiny lugs sticking out.

The small black box on the rear wheel arch is an extension to the alarm module which controls the ultrasonic interior movement detectors. They were only fitted on late cars and I’ve yet to hear of one that isn’t disconnected.
 
If you have split fold rear seats which I suspect you do on a 92, the load cover is correct, cassette types only on one piece rear back squab, expensive to replace and prone to material rot through UV protect it in bright sunlight.
 
Those bridge spoiler fixings on the side pieces (hockey sticks) are very prone to break - be careful.... (New bits are £££)
Spare s/h foglight units are very hard to find in good condition. You might just have to bite the bullet on new ones..

But congrats on buying the best 944 model - hope you're enjoying it

The new hockey sticks are rubbish too Ed. I had to bite the bullet and buy a new one for the N/S and several of the fixings have detached themselves from the body of the trim already. I’m going to have to strip it all down again and bond the fixings back onto the trim with Space Shuttle glue from NASA I think.

I will leave the motion sensor control box as it is, dont want any electrical or starting problems.
I get the boot cover design, and its actually not bad, with the elastic allowing the hatch to open while connected but it is a strange design and black, rather than cobalt blue to match the interior. So it looks after market, but I assume a blue one is pretty much impossible to get hold of
Is eBay the best option for a sunroof bag? A few on at the moment around £100. i guess this is the going rate.
I assume front fog/main beam units are sealed, so will have to bite the bullet here, if no other options on replacing the reflectors?
Can anyone tell me the best workshop manual to buy?

Early days yet and haven't had much time with the car, so really frustrating. Few little jobs to do. Just put on 4 new tyres and its an MOT and service next.

Hello and welcome

My S2 has done almost 120k and is still on its original clutch, and I've heard of cars going to over 150k without changing. Just depends on how it's used, perhaps, and as it's an expensive job it's worth waiting until it needs doing? Also worth checking when the cam belt/balance belt/rollers were last done.

Oh, and by the way I've used Northway for the 12yrs I've owned the car...they're at Beenham near Reading, so not really close to you? However, excellent with transaxle cars...Ray trained at Porsche in the '80s and Paul used to own a 968, and they have a refreshingly pragmatic approach. A friend in R19 who lives in Bucks gets his 968 done at JAZ I think.
 
Thanks very helpful. Yes I probably ought to get the belts and rollers done as it is less than convincing about when this was last done! My other major worry is rust. The sills look ok but wanted to get it formally inspected and is there any preventative treatment I could apply now to preserve it as I am going to park it on my street in London and worry about corrosion ... Thoughts?/advice. Will check out Northway as I have heard good things


 
Take the vents out the B pillars, stick your camera phone down an take a few pics
Depending on what you find you can then use a Bilt Hamber product to soak out the sills, or POR15 product
