Was in my local opc yesterday waiting for work to be done on my 997 turbo and just had a waik around having a look at our new Porsche and to be honest was very disappointed with what I saw didn't like the new shape of the car at all nor the new interior I can honesty say that I really do be leave that our fav cars r just loseing that special something I also own a 993 turbo which I think is the most good looking Porsche ever just feel this new car is just not what Porsche is about just wann no what you guys think or am I the only one who thinks this way ?

The styling is growing on me to be fair.....
True the 993 is the pretty version..
I think the 991 will become the best ever as long as the electric steering can be sorted for us old school [;)]

Whether the 991 will drag people of of the 997 I'm not sure -especially with the cost- but I'm sure this was said from the 996 to 997.

However the new Boxster styling [8D]

Hi Andrew. You are spot on. They have basically turned what we all regarded as as classic sports car in to a Grand Tourer Audi (even the back of the new 911 looks like the back of an A4 or A6 - the lights are the big give away). But, as you say, the major let down has to be the interior. It's as far removed from a 911 as I can remember.
The upside? You currently own one of what will surely be regarded as one of the last 'iconic' 911's that Porsche have made (the air-cooled gang might not agree here ;-))
Hang on to it. You might be surprised at what happens.....

They've obviously recognized the handling merits of the mid-engined Boxter also by moving the engine even further towards the front of the car. And the new Boxter as a car.....? Simply awesome. Great styling and I've no doubt, even better handeling - if that's possible!!

Adrian.

I had the Porsche news update through today and the Boxster looks stunning, almost a mini CGT [8D]
If they were to carry over even the slightest bit of that design to the new Turbo then I think I'd be committed.

I know - I had the same observations. I spec'ed up a new Boxster for the Mrs and with all my typical 'necessary' (driving) options it came to £65k! I couldn't stop hysterically laughing for ages...

Sure you didnt "slip"onto the 991 cab page by "mistake"Alex[:D]??

I managed to get to £60k with my "essential"options-well done for notching it up another level!!!

Hi Adrian could not agree with you more, I too owned a seal grey/graphite 996.2 4s that looked the business as did the turbo. In particular I dislike the 991 front apron with those dreadful 'eyebrow looking' daylight running lights, and the unfinished blanked out centre aperture,
and O why did Porsche decide to decorate their name in large letters across the rear apron !
Anyway had I 100k to spend I would be looking for a low mileage turbo for good measure.

I think that they've tried to recreate the rear engine cover of one of the very early 911's (maybe the 911 2.2e..?) and it's a hark back to that, I suppose. But it seems as though that's it as far as 'tradition' is concerned.

I sat in one in the showroom in OPC Mayfair the other day and my preconceptions were pretty much confirmed about the interior. The outside is a passable, if a little large, 911 but again, the wheelbase is quite noticeably almost 5 inches longer and, whilst I'm sure that makes for a more stable and forgiving ride - is this what 911's are about? I'd say not.

I can buy any manner of fast four door saloons if I want that - and a very torquey, diesel powered one that'll give me 60 to the gallon on a run down to the south of France or where ever for that matter....? [8|]

Of course, the reviews so far can't be ignored; they all pretty much seem to say that it handles fantastically well. But the lion's share of £100K for, well...just that....? There are plenty of cars out there that will do that for half the price - and half the running costs.

I'd put money on it that they'll carry that same line through the underside of the door handle and possibly sink the bottom two-thirds of the doors also - leading straight in to two large intakes - as per the current TT's. Circa 600 bhp with lower emissions than the current model, anyone..?[;)]

I seem to be the odd one out here as I actually quite like the interior and from the reports it seems to be able to do all the important bits well, I'm sure even at around £100k it will sell and keep Porsche profitable.
Totally agree about the new Boxster it looks the "dogs" and will without doubt drive well, I could not match Alex as mine with plenty of toys only came to £59k.
On the basis of this thread I should probably trade down to a Boxster and have an awsome handling car for half the price of a 991, then again the power of the turbo does have an incredible smile factor that is difficult to replace.
Oh what to do?

After a morning/afternoon at Center Gravity, your Turbo will feel like a completely new car!

Personally, I am more excited by the new Boxster than I am the new 991 - mainly because of the looks [8D]. If the 991 Turbo looks better than the 991 Carrera then I may have a problem (but given previous incarnations this has never been the case).

Not forgetting what the new Cayman will look like too..... [:)] I think the new Boxster looks fantastic from the side/front profile. I'd have personally liked have seen a more profiled rear (at the bottom) but do like the lip/spolier design.

As far as the 991 goes, I'm still not convinced about the exterior. Whilst the design can grow on you over time, I didn't say that about the 997 for instance. The 997 design was fantastic from the outset and over 3 years later owning a 997.2S it still makes me look back at it when walking away from it in a car park. The interior of the 991 offers much better quality, say over the 997 but all those buttons clustered together looks messy IMO.

I'm still to drive the 991, maybe seeing them on the road will change my mind, who knows! [:)]

Hopefully the turbo will have a restyled front apron with more cheerful looking daytime running lights[:D]
Other than that, I do like the look of the 991, but it's more of a GT car now. That does however make the 997 the last of an era and I suppose, in a away, maybe the era I prefer. However, Porsche has somehow always achieved making each predecessor a classic in it's own right when the successor comes along. The only exception to that is probably the 996 IMO.

I think its because the preceding car is always so good that the successor doesn't immediately make a compelling impression to urge one to upgrade (which is good). I think that is true will the 997 and 987. There's another thread discussing how the 991 is not significantly different to the 997 to make it compelling to upgrade. I think in time the differences will become more apparent. The 981 Boxter is however a bigger step change visually in the front, side and rear profiles, whilst the 991 is mainly in the rear profile at first glance (and those day time running lights[:D])

The previous post referring to the Cayman does not say so, but IMO the images seen on the web show it to be the best looking of the new 991 based range. For my money a Cayman S with a few of the new 991 goodies should spec at 55-60k and as such represents much better value for money, if you don't need those rear "seats" than a 911 Carerra at over 70k. Also with those chassis improvements and weight savings the Cayman could well embarrass it's big brother in the handling and road holding stakes.
I am sure this is the main reason they are holding back on the Cayman launch " until 2013" and so maximise on the 991 orders.

That's a good point. From a handling perspective it wouldn't be a good idea to launch the Cayman close to the 991. However, the power deficit that harnesses the Cayman will ensure it will not upstage its bigger brother on track. It's a shame that Porsche is stifling one of it's best platforms and the Cayman is the worst seller in Porsche's lineup. Now that the 911 is being pitched as a luxury GT car, they should still be able to charge a premium for it even if they let the Cayman off the leash. The motoring press would give them an embarassing hard time for a while but it would settle and there'd be a new status quo. They could then start to charge more for the Cayman. However, Porsche won't take that risk, and neither would I [:D].

As they have announced that the Boxster and Cayman S will retain the 3.4 engine I can't see the power deficit is going to be that much over the Carrera. With similar weight savings and chassis improvements the Cayman has got to offer very similar performance to the 911 with mid- engined handling characteristics. Add the latest 911 electronic aids and I think it will be a very attractive package.
And I have a feeling it will be better looking.

Agreed - And with a DMS/similar upgrade the deficit will be even smaller.

To come back to the original from Andreas I dont like the front of the 991, the squared off splitter is out of character and the whole front end just doesn't look right. Shame because the rest of the styling apart from those wing mirrors is great.
So if the images of the new Cayman are anything like the real thing, I think the Cayman will continue to be the pick of the range looks-wise.

I like the interior.
The drive is too boring. Definately not involving!
I hear that those who have purchased one and want to bail out have been seriously burnt by poor residuals.
