NEW 997

Hi Paul

Had the paddle shift wheel fitted last month.. It's so much better having proper paddles than those silly buttons - after a while I stopped using the buttons (I just gave up trying to convince myself they we ok). With the paddles the car is now as much fun as my old manual 997..

Also, the paddle wheel has a slightly smaller diameter (10mm) which does feel better in the bends, believe it or not..

The only function I miss on the old multifunction wheel is the artist/album/track scroll feature on iPod player, however, driving enjoyment has a higher priority for me.. [;)]

I think its fair to say the paddle wheel has brought the enjoyment to a new level for quite a few owners with the PDK..
I'll be ticking that option...

Is it me or is it just odd that Porsche can't combine the two? Look at the state of the 458 Italia steering wheel as demonstrated by Clarkson last week to show how complex it can be!! Perhaps the 991 or whatever it is called will solve the mystery.

It is odd therefore it's not you! On the present paddle wheel it because they have put the lighty up bits on the horizontal spokes where the twiddly bits are on the multifunction wheel. I don't know why they couldn't have left the Sport, Sport + and Launch displays on the dash and had a multifunction paddle instead? As you say Pete, that will be the on the next evolution no doubt!

What they really need to do is fix the paddles to the steering column so I know where to find them!

Nick, I agree entirely.

There are very few ocassions when you would want to change gear mid-corner and with a fixed paddle you always know where to find it when needed. [;)]

Another development for 991 maybe? [8|]

Regards,

Clive

If they would just let us design the cars just think how much better they could be![;)] Apologies to OP for getting off topic.....

All,
Could you just confirm a couple of things regarding the steering wheel options please.
1: multifuntion wheel. if this is in conjunction with sports chrono do i get the PDK display at the top of the wheel that shows sport, sport plus and launch control when active.

2:paddles. If no display on paddles, does the dashboard display if launch control is active and is there a way to control phone functions if i take this wheel instead.

Thanks,
Paul

Paul, the multi function wheel with Sport Chrono Plus does not have any displays on the wheel itself - these appear on the dash (below the rev counter) The paddle wheel has displays on the horizontal spokes - left for Sport ans Sport+ and right side for Launch Control Active. There is nothing else on this wheel, The phone is controlled via the lower left stalk or via the touchscreen. The paddle wheel is also thicker than the multifunction wheel which I find nicer to grip![;)]

If you look here and the following page you can see the Multifunction PDK wheel and the paddle wheel

If you are ordering a new gen 2.2 you will get the new display on the wheel. Its very subtle. The wheel will also be black not silver/black, see my post "here she is" to see the new wheel

That's neat - hadn't seen that wheel to date and didn't look closely enough at your photos - obviously! Still rather have paddles.........[;)]

Thats the wheel i thought i was getting, hve just got the OPC to email pictures to confirm. I have decided to stay with the multifunction wheel and have just had confirmation i can collect car Saturday afternoon. Wife says i'm like a kid in a sweet shop at the moment[:D]. Thanks to all those that have replied i will post pics tomorrow evening.

Paul

Oddly enough when I spec'ed my car, the steering wheel (along with seats) took methe longest to decide on..... plenty of questions and popping into various OPC[:(]

Hi Paul

have you picked yours up yet, sounds the identical car to mine (which i got this evening) ? hope yours looks as good as mine when you get it
Jon

Hi Jon,
No haven't got mine yet pick up at 4pm Saturday, so very jealous of you. Hope you are enjoying it, we'll have to compare photo's tomorrow enjoy

Paul

Very nice, Chris and congratulations.

That colour is one of the best for the 997 CS and the wheels look great. Unfortunately, lid damage is fairly common when overloading the compartment. People forget to load it from the back and the fact that the lid slopes fairly sharply at the front. Also don't close the lid down on the badge as this can cause damage too.

Regards,

Clive.

Thanks for the comments, I was wondering about the best place to close the bonnet, to be honest I have been pushing on the badge but will stop that now :)

Is that right re not using the badge to shut boot? That's what the dealer told me and that's what I do?
