So a busy last few days in the world of the 992 Turbo S. On the Friday I finally collected my car from my Porsche Centre. Thankfully it was quite a dry day, although there was a cold wind blowing across the forecourt. I became quite excited when I caught first sight of the car, resplendent in its Guards Red livery occupying pride of place in the showroom.
Showroom Special My sales executive, Mitch seemed just as excited as I was about the collection and we spent a little while going through formalities and looking over the car. Although it was due to go right into my North Devon detailers almost immediately, I'd decided beforehand to let the Centre do the initial clean-up and removal of the protective wrapping etc during PDI as it's much more of an event when the car is looking pretty and pristine.
Handover - Covid style Over the years my Son, James has been with me for most of my new car collections and it's a sign of the times I'm now accompanying him on his too! Interestingly, my previous Carrara White 991 Turbo S was sat in the compound at the back of the Centre and is for sale again. So I took the opportunity to reacquaint myself and found it is in superb condition and a great credit to its previous owner. It'll be a great buy for someone.
The lad's growing or I'm shrinking - or both In all, by the time we had gone through everything, chewed the fat, thanked a few people in the Centre who had helped out with my order, it was 4 hours later before we finally got underway. South on the M5 for a few miles, before turning off at Jnc 25, Taunton to tackle one of my favourite roads back home, the B3227 through Bampton and Wiveliscombe. This used to be the main route into my part of the world before the A361 North Devon Link Road was completed back in 1987. Nowadays, it takes mainly local traffic with few tourists in season, but at this time of year its normally free of motor homes and the like and provides an interesting and varied route for drivers with its hairpin and zigzag bends, tricky cambers and sections of straight - all in fairly equal measures.
My immediate impressions after this brisk trip is that this car is immense! [
] It is stiff and more focussed than my old 991 - it's a GT3 with grunt! It has a good front end with plenty of feedback through the steering, although still not quite as nice as the old hydraulic system in the 997, but pretty close! It is of course prodigiously fast - one of the quickest on the road at any price, so it's a good job I went for the speed limit indicator option! Arriving home, there were the usual mandatory rides up the road for friends and family before delivering it over the my detailer on the Monday.
And there it's been - all week - with me picking it up on Friday. So keen was Ryan, my detailer to have it ready and perfect in time for my collection, he worked until 1am on Friday morning and was up again at 5am to finish it off. I think the results speak for themselves:-
Fresh from the detailer's studio
For those interested in such things, the car has had a 2 stage wash and machine polish then another wash, then exposed paintwork was given a Crystal Serum Ultra ceramic coat, including wheels and callipers, followed by Exo V4 hydrophobic coating. whilst the exposed front sections are covered in Xpel Ultimate Plus paint protection film with a Halo coating. This includes the whole front bonnet, bumper, aero kit, headlights, door mirrors and side skirts. The factory sharks fin film on the rear wings was removed because the Xpel sills pattern extends to additional protection in those areas. Inside, the leather has L1 Leather Guard AB and the carpets are treated with Smart Fabric V2.
So I'm all set up now for some serious 992 Register action once things start to get going again!
I'm still not fully conversant with all the intricacies of the PCM, WIFI and Porsche Connect set up, but I've booked a tuition slot this Wednesday when I hope to be more au fait with the system.
Regards,
Clive
