New Boxster S, New Cayman S or Used 911?

I had a great day at Porsche Centre Reading today and spent a few hours there. The whole experience was a world apart from the previous OPC that had visited. After a fairly lengthy test drive of the Cayman S I ended up ordering one. :) A customer had cancelled his order and bought a 996 that was in the showroom. I took his build slot for April build and April/May delivery.

[;)] Well done glad you have found the move to another OPC rewarding and I like your final decision If I ever wanted a tin top that would have been my choice too.

Congratulations - now which colour, which interior, what wheels, PCM or not..........................[:D][:D][:D]

Thanks guys. I really had my heart set on another Porsche but very nearly went for another marque after being let down by one OPC. The great thing about Reading was the sheer number of cars that I could look at round the back - ones being prepared for customers, new registrations and used models. There must have been well over 200 cars there. I actually got to look at various wheels and other options.

I've got around three weeks to finalise the spec and it's a real headache! But a nice headache to have I guess. I made some mistakes when I bought my Boxster in 2003 as I missed out a couple of options that I really wanted. This time I want to keep the car for a few years and will include everything that I need (and can afford!).

I suppose the timing was very fortunate as May delivery will be just in time for the Summer and enough time to run the car in. All in all, it was a good day and my faith in Porsche has been restored to a large degree! To cap it all, it was my birthday today so I guess I just bought myself a very expensive birthday present!

The dealer principle at Reading, Julian, is a top bloke. Very enthusiastic and a keen supporter of us...the Porsche owners. Some of the OPC's have got fat and bloated, car parks stuffed with secondhand cars, bulging bank balances etc. However what goes around comes around. When times are hard it's the garages that make US feel good that will survive.

You are spending a large sum of money and deserve to feel special and excited at the prospect of buying a new Porsche. Porsche Centre Reading appear aware of this.

Great to hear you were able to find an OPC you were happy with and drive and touch the cars to make YOUR choice.

Looking forward to comparing notes on the Cayman S!

Well done :)

When I was in the market for a Porsche last year, my financial framework and the considered options were very similar: I was actually looking for a used 996 but then moved on to a new 987S Boxster as I took a bigger liking to a new car and model. The Caymans were nowhere in sight at that time.

I haven't regretted my decision.

All i've managed to get out of the Reading salesman is the coloured wheel centres and mats! Is this normal? I'm sure when I got my old Boxster back in 2003, the Chiswick salesman (who is no longer there now) threw in a few more goodies.

They do ask you to sign documents with a rather nice Porsche pen.....[;)]

Apart from that 'rather nice pen' didn't actually work when it came to signing the documents!!! A Bic had to suffice! It was actually quite a funny moment...

Funny how Reading seems to get a number of those customers who are disatisfied with their local OPC.

I'm another one.

Do any of the OPC's actually read these forums? If so, do they care? I fear not as Porsche vehicles effectively sell themselves. How much actual work does an OPC salesperson have to do to sell a car?

No it's not normal. You've done well!

I was given the mats when I returned from picking the car up at the factory. Coloured wheel centres were not offered (unless I was paying for them of course!)

I hope some of you people ordering new cars are doing Factory Collection - it's a great experience, especially if you can take advantage of the 10(?) days insurance cover and make a holiday of it [8D] If you can then it makes it very good value for money, and you'll remember it forever.[:)]

I got a second Porsche KeyFob in baby blue.....

I wouldn't mind a Porsche Pen (one that actually works!) and a Porsche brolly. Should I threaten to cancel my order if I don't get these? ;)

Having bought 4 Boxsters and a Cayenne over the last few years I have to say I am more than happy with Reading OPC

We bought our Boxster 550 Spyder Anniversary from Reading (they were the only dealer that could supply that model at the time) in June 2004 and were thoroughly underwhelmed by the whole experience. As far as 'goodies' were concerned we got a bottle of champagne (which we don't like) and which we practically had to ask for.

After adding a disgruntled post to this forum shortly afterwards we were contacted by the Sales Manager (yes some OPC staff do read the forum apparently) who listened to our impression of the collection experience and sent my wife some flowers, which were very nice but we would have appreciated a more customer friendly collection process in the first place.

Needless to say we won't be buying another car from Reading and that's not just because it's 200 miles away from us.

It seems to me that OPCs are on thin ice if they "soft discount" but the area to exploit is the finance package. So (and after you have satisfied yourself that their deal is OK) say to them "If I take out the finance with you and not with Northern Rock/AA/Loanshark Plc will you give me:
a) A new pair of support stockings for my varicose veins
b) A Porsche Design Zimmer Frame (or is it a sledge)
c) A set of fitted luggage
d) The home 'phone number of the dark haired receptionist
What I can't work out is if I'm so smart why am I so poor?
