New Car Collection

A few of you knew via my FB posts that I was going to collect my new car this week, some even knew what it was and a few others guessed (some incorrectly) [;)]

So at 6.00am on Thursday morning myself and Willy left Scotland in his Mercedes ML pulling a trailer for the 400 mile journey down to Folkstone to get the 1.20pm Eurotunnel across to France.

Once in France we then headed through Belgium and some of the busiest traffic I have been in for a long time where we met up with the cars previous owner to collect a few bits that he still had in his attic and for a chat about the car (Thanks Hans [:)] )

Then onwards to Germany with our destination hotel still along way away, and a final arrival time due to traffic and stops of 1.30am on Friday morning. Total miles on day one were just under 890 miles!!

Up nice and early on the Friday morning to head to the garage to sort the paperwork out and load up the car for the journey back to Rotterdam and the overnight ferry back to Hull. The garage was unbelievable and some of the cars for sale I have never seen in the metal before. The stock value must have been over £25M at least [:-]

Once we had done all the necessary paperwork and had a good look around we headed to Rotterdam and arrived in plenty of time after another 320 miles of driving, this time with a bit of extra weight on board. We got loaded on board safely and headed to the bar to relax and watch the England game before getting a good nights sleep.

Saturday morning and the final leg of the journey back home from Hull taking us through some pitiful weather and the final 180 miles back home.

Total mileage was 1390 miles and due to cheap fuel in Belgium (€1.15 = 85p per litre) and in Holland (€1.35 = £1.00 per litre) it cost about £250.00 for fuel for the full journey using 2 1/2 tanks of diesel.

Here are a few pictures taken en route and I will put more up of the car once I have got it cleaned up properly [:D]

Not been on the forum for a little while... Log on... See this. Excellent. Really looking forward to seeing this in the flesh at some point. Congratulations. [:)]

I've always been jealous of your garage floor tiles[:D]-still great story beginning & lovely car,Martin.

Spot on. I've been browsing t'internet over last months more often for turbo cup info. Hope to see this car for real soon! Great purchase

Thanks for the comments so far [:)]

I spoke to Porsche Kendal last week and Andrew informed me that there is an outstanding fuel line recall from a long time ago still outstanding and that the car is still valid to get this done FOC [:D] Don't you love Porsche Warranty recalls [:)]

Got a pair of new headlights on order from Porsche as it will need the LHD ones removed to get it MOT'd before I can register it in the UK with the DVLA.

Why did you travel so far for this one? Is there something really special about the spec or its history? Sorry if you have discussed this prior? Looks great by-the-way :)

*numpty reasoning* PS - It is clear it is a racer ..... but the question still applies

I looked at 3 in France which were all discounted as the French Race cars had less regulations and are more of a "bastardised" car than an original Turbo Cup car that left the factory. I also nearly bought a black car originally from the 88 Turbo Cup Race series that is now in Japan but ended up missing it after I was unsure of some parts on the car.

To answer your question, you have to travel as there were only a small quantity made (less than 200 in total I think) and of those built lots were destroyed in racing, some went to the USA and Canada and have different bumpers, wings, chassis numbers etc. I also wanted a later car that had a fibreglass bonnet and Magnesium wheels where the 86 cars ran on Fuch rims with a steel bonnet. These cars never raced in England so I presume no UK teams were involved which in turn probably meant no cars were registered here? Jon Mitchell may be able to add to this.

Plus as far as I am aware there is not another 944 Turbo Cup car in the UK unless someone can confirm otherwise?

I haven't heard anything about the infamous 500 BHP red one since the year it was at Silverstone.

Did you buy it from Springbok? They often have some interesting front-engined Porsches for sale.

Yes came from Springbok, they have some amazing cars in stock and they are very good to deal with [:)]

Jon Mitchell has one [;)]

I didn't know that, when I talked to him he didn't mention it? Will be worth a conversation [:D]

No need, just mask the wedge on the lens with tape to flatten the beam.
