These wheels are off a 4x4 Cayenne ! hence they are heavy maybe this is not helping, what's "Ropey" about the
steering? is it stiff or groaning etc..

It looks like the tyre sizes are all the same 225/45/17?

R

Yes, I know the wheels are off a cayenne, maybe I'm just used to newer cars but it seems to like to tram line a bit... the wheels don't go straight with ease over slightly indifferent surfaces. There's no play in the steering or anything, reminds me of my old mk2 golf that had 8" wide wheels. There is the odd squeak out of the belt when maneuvering, but it had sat for nearly 2 years. Does the PS fluid require a change too you think?

7x16" 205/55/16 or 7 front & 8" 225/50/16 (much lighter Wheels) will change the feel totally, the offsets will also be correct and the tyres lighter too...
I thought you have a 17" Cup2 set ?
Any classic Porsche transaxle Compared to any Modern car will feel agricultural, very mechanical and noisy that's the Soul which Modern stuff lacks!

Yeah I was going to get a lend of those from a friend but he got offered strong money for them so he sold them. I'll have to hunt myself, would love something that'll fill the arches up rightly. He has 928s on his and put 30mm spacers on too and it sits beautifully, although he is to lower it a bit... you can imagine

For best handling, feel and steering whilst your in the car driving it! ...stick with the Original sizes and offsets ,

If your prefer to change the car and achieve a certain "Look" when your out the car looking at it (Not driving it!) and / or other people are "looking" at it
change it, space it, do you what you wish etc...but there will be compromises to the handling, ride and steering feel.

Those forged 928 wheels are also quite light, but that Look is gross for me, all wrong and will not drive as nice as it could, each to their own!
The tyre look like a narrow tyre on a wide rim (stretched) in this photo?

R

yeah he has the tires stretched on it, he swears it doesnt handle any different for all he drives it.

He uses that as a daily but has a lovely s2 locked away that he dotes over...

... Anyway, got my daily sold and moved the insurance over to the porsche this week, so far so good!

Found the other part of the timing cover so i fitted that! I also Very lightly tinted all the indicators, and whilst i had the rear lights out, i cleaned, polished and waxed all around the inside of the boot whilst i had the carpets etc out.

So its been only a few days of motoring and i have to say, it drives brilliantly. Just drove 70 odd miles to work nightshift there tonight and it was a pleasure. Cant believe how well it handles, and the torque leaves overtaking and slowing through villages etc less work than the previous Jap 6Cyl i was driving.

Think ive found some wheels too, but just have to try slide the handful of money past the wife to be lol.

Suppose I should update this eh?
Since the last time I wrote on here, I've done quite alot.

I left the car round with an engineer who knows what he's doing to sort out the torsion bar. He took it all apart, cleaned/RE-greased everything and put it back together, lowered to match the springs that were put in the front. Looks much better, not a harsh ride at all either!
The temperature switch in the rad played up the odd time so I fitted a new one, flushed the system and put new coolant in it.
Frazerparts hooked me up with a new centre console armrest, plugs, rotor arm and distribution cap.
New gear lever too, including the wee white ball retainer. Oh, and the rear lock seal, it was replaced too.
Put alpine speakers in the front and took out the rear frames that fit around the speakers in the back and jigged up a wee frame to take a set of 6x9s I had in the shed. Much better!
The clocks had a wee flicker too, turned out to be a relay, replaced that too.
Then next was the wheels. 17" 9.5 rear, 8.5 front, ET47. I Thought they were gonna be a tight fit but I still have a little room for a set of spacers but I'm in no rush for them.
Few things yet to do, refurbish the rear drums and replace the cables, stick a big battery in it, strip down the stone chip section of sills, repaint and seal (might need to weld a but beforehand) and hopefully fit a set of subtle skirts. From there I'll maybe treat myself to the clear lens kit, although I'd lightly smoke them first.
I'd upload pics but this ancient system doesn't like mobiles.... could the forum not solve this?

Hi Laurence,

Great progress, looking really good. Think carefully about side skirts.......people tend to assume your covering rusty sills (even if you aren't). Regards tinting clear lenses, I can make the rear indicator sections in different levels of smoke which is far better than tint spraying.

Cool Wolfie, slow progress but I'll get onto you once I've spacers sorted! Fronts, rears and side repeaters in a light smoke ? £

Ok...
Few more things done to the car, and once I've uploaded photos to photobucket I'll paste them in, I'm in India though and the internet is shocking.

The goal was for my friend and I to have both cars ready for my wedding which was 30th august. Happy to say we made it! We had 10 months to sort them and both of us work abroad most of the time so to go from tired cars to presentable was tough enough.

Since last time on here I have rubbed down and welded small sections on the sills, painted and stone chipped them so they look factory.
Tinted the rear lights red.
Rubbed down and sprayed all the wiper arms. Rolled the arches using a heat gun and roller so as not to crack the paint.
Put 7mm spacers up front ( need bigger)
Put 28mm on rear (ended up milling 3mm off)
Turned the index to its highest setting as it sat a little too low at the rear
Fitted new bonnet struts and boot struts
Buffed the car and applied 4 layers of autoglym hd wax.
Painted the window frames black as I nudged them when buffing (oops)
Installed a mic for the cd player/phone connection
