New lad

I dont understand why people favour NAs over NBs. The NB is greatly superior. On PH and similar forums people fawn over the 'pop-up lights', but surely we are over them by now? I have kept a little stash of nice NB parts for when I buy another...

Well thanx for all the replies fella,s, realy good of you to help me out. I think i,m kinda getting somewhere, i still love my mx, but ,like i mentioned, it gets a bit tiresome on long journey,s! In an ideal world i would keep it AND get a 944, but i have my 72 swb landy, a 72 LWB landy( in the mid build stage !),and a 1973 2300 hls viva on the back burner. I notice mention of the dash shape, is it that important, i was also wondering if i could fit the wheels i like to a later car, as for the interior, i will not be able to stand red velour, it WILL have to be leather. I understand the two cars are different, i,m looking at the 2.7/3.0 for the extra tourqe, its always nice to have a bit extra eh. . . But as mentioned, a healthy 2.5 should perform ok. . . . thanx again lads, really nice of you all, Dave

I had a 2.7 and it was much torquier than my mate's 2.5, it made the transition from my daily driver BMW diesel very easy. It was planted, progressive to break away and nicely chuckable. The chassis was so balanced and loved twisty country roads. I left a lot of much quicker cars for dead once it got twisty as it was so easy to hurl about :) Now I've got a tweaked turbo and if I'm honest I don't have quite as much fun on the twisty roads anymore as I'm now concentrating so much on not dying! However, it is monumentally quicker than my old lux and is genuinely exhilarating to drive.

Dash shape - square dash = early sporty style geo and can have cookies all 2.5 8V oval dash = later GT style geo but cookies wont fit '85 -87 2.5 8V '87 -88 2.5 16V '89 2.7 8V '89 on 3.0 16V (S2) '87 on Turbo Rider to above there was 1 year of oval dash AND sporty geo! Early wheels wont fit later cars and later wheels would need big spacers. I really enjoyed my early cars handling, more fun than the later ones, but I would still buy on condition and recent history.

Because the NA is the original face of the marque and looks better ;) They're pretty much the same anyway unless you prefer the later interior or vvt engine/6 speed box. With the same mods it just comes down to looks and for me would be an NA or mk2.5. Although a nice mk2 RS would get my attention. We nearly bought an NC, slightly different car, but the original DNA is still there.

The NB certainly looks better in my opinion - far more purposeful. With regards to being the same, they really arent Dave! Its true that the later the NA the better it is with regards to rigidity and harshness, but the NB was a massive step forward. Remember: NBs didnt have the cabin brace that the later 1.8l NAs did. This is because the body was far stronger. I can understand people prefering the NA because they think that it looks better, but they really arent a better car.

The NB might be more rigid, but is certainly heavier than the early NA's. In the right colour the NB looks OK, but the mk2.5 looks far better IMO. I'm just a sucker for pop ups!! I've never driven a standard NA, but my one was plenty rigid enough with some basic mods - OE strut brace, chassis braces, 4 point roll bar & harness bar. At the end of the day, the differences between them are subtle enough. If I was buying again it would be a mk2.5 or NC, purely from a vfm point of view. Anyway, this is going a bit off topic now!! Mx5's are great, 944's are great - but they're not the same, lol!

Good old Pete [;)] The Lux is a really nice drivable fun chuckable car and wouldn't fail to raise a smile. I had great fun chasing an Aston around Snetterton in mine (until the brakes caught fire :) ). Unfortunately, as cars have developed, the Lux now seems a bit lethargic compared to most hot hatches. As a result it is like a red rag to a bull for every mildly tweaked Euro shopping trolley and Ricer looking to take the scalp of a Porsche. It is probably the main reason I swapped mine for a Turbo as, every time I drove the Lux, I would have some spotty oik up my chuff wanting to push me down a dual carriageway. In such situations the Lux isn't going to out run much and (unless you enjoy being embarrassed) the best option is to move over. Around the country lanes and B roads it is a different story, and certainly more fun than a Turbo. Some years back now a bunch of us had a week in Scotland. It started as a 944 week but, in the end there was also an SC and a 924S in the party. Around the roads of Scotland the 924S was never found wanting and was every bit as quick as a pair of tuned Turbos.

My series one car is quite quick, but this came at the expense of NVH (and glass, carpet, sound deadening, upholstery, opening windows, adjustable seats etc). In the end it went like sh*t off a shovel, but this came with a heavy price - tinnitus! The car was noisy in every respect until 90+mph, when it all seemed to come together and at 100mph it was lovely, but this is far from practical. Still nicer to drive throug the city than my Turbo, though!

John has it nailed, the number of times I pulled over on a dual carriageway to let a Fabia VRS or similar past in my lux was embarrassing. Now I still pull over, but I flex my right foot and watch them become a speck in the mirror ;)

I notice you mention a year of oval adsh and sporty geo. . . . . what year and how do i tell. . . . . . ., Dave

1985.5 cars, as they are known. Porsche model years run September to July, with the factory closed in August. There are c-reg series one and two cars, with the late c-reg and early d-reg being the new interior, but pre-ABS and other changes.

I wouldnt call it 'sporty geometry'. The 1986 cars retained the old 23mm offset and the 1987 cars, for which ABS was an option, reverted to the 924s safer scrub radius.

3/4 tank of fuel, TR lane half cage, air con that worked, my NB RS weighed in at 1020KG on the scales(corner weight time)....not that bad specially with the 6 speed box and extra bracing. Friends JDM integra came in at 1040kg with a 1/4 tank of juice...no wonder they are so quick. NB is better looking than the NA hands down, mine was in baby poo brown colour (pimp gold..;-) ) but still looked great.

Hi Dave, and welcome to the forum mate I should think after a MX and an old Landy your body must crave a comfortable drive [:D][:D][:D] Good luck with your search hope your in one and can make a meet with the 44's soon, of course you don't have to wait until you have one, whereabouts are you? Naturally the only model to own is the S, it encompasses all the attributes of the other models in one! Nimble - like the Lux Little lag - like the Turbo Comfortable - like the S2 Has the Badge [:D]
