New lad

Hi Andy, thanx for the welcome, and yes, my body does crave a bit of comfort, the Sprout ( thats what i call my landy, dont ask ! ) isnt what you would call comfortable. . . . The S model is one car i havnt even thought about. I have seen an early lux, looks good in the pics, had all the important jobs done, clutch, belts pump, etc, loads of history and the seller tells me there is no rusty bits, but he,s a dealr so i,m a bit catious, the only problem is i,m in the north east, near sunderland and the car is in . . . .ROSS ON WYE. . . DOH. I,m gonna ring the fella, try and get him to give me an honest opinion of it, thats a long drive to find out its a lemon. . . . , cheers, Dave
ORIGINAL: andy watson Hi Dave, and welcome to the forum mate I should think after a MX and an old Landy your body must crave a comfortable drive [:D][:D][:D] Good luck with your search hope your in one and can make a meet with the 44's soon, of course you don't have to wait until you have one, whereabouts are you? Naturally the only model to own is the S, it encompasses all the attributes of the other models in one! Nimble - like the Lux Little lag - like the Turbo Comfortable - like the S2 Has the Badge [:D]

Dave, If you need a hand looking at a more local car then give me a shout as I'm in Newcastle. You won't get much of an appreciation of a standard car from mine though and it'll make you want a Turbo* *officially not the fastest model or the fastest colour according to Oli

Thanx verry much, thats really good of you mate, thing is i canr seem to find an early car local to me, but i have been thinking about this one. . . . http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281187479323?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 emailed the seller and spoke on the fone, all belts done this year, clutch done, electrics sorted out. . . . . . long way to go tho. . . . . Dave

I saw a C reg Turbo in The Freeman car park today, oval dash but an 85/86 model and thought of you. I stuck a business card in the window rubber saying if he was thinking of selling then to look you up on the forum ;)

Thats realy nice of you, a turbo isnt what i,m looking for. . . . but i wouldnt say no [;)], did you have a look at the e bay link, be nice to no what anyone else thinks, cheers, Dave

When i spoke to the seller, he was honest enough to mention a touch of blue smoke on start up, and a bit if it was reved hard, i no with 150,000 miles the stem seals will be a touch brittle, is this normal on a 944. . . . . , Dave

How about the 86 Lux that Lacedr has advertised in the For Sale section? Looks good to me!

Allready been offerd the car.. . .BUT. . .i have my heart set on an early car, i like the square dash but i LOVE the cookie cutter wheels, i just hope i dont regrett not buying Lacedr,s car, it looks like a nice one. . . Dave

It is, you just don't know it yet! The advice has always been to get the best example available in your price range rather than get hung up on a particular model. I'd be looking at lacedr's car very seriously if I were in your position.

I have looked at it mate, Dave pm ed me the other day,it looks a nice car and i will probably regrett it but i,m after an early car, have you checked out the ebay link i posted, id love to no what anyone else thinks before i travel all that way !, cheers, Dave

The car in the link seems straight enough and in very good nick for the money. I'd want to see some service history so I knew it was 150k not 250k. I don't know where Ross-on-Wye is (down south somewhere) but there must be someone near by that could give it the once over for some beer tokens. If the sills are good and the clutch has been changed then go for it, the other mechanical bits are pretty straightforward to work on.

Thanx Eldavo, Ross on Wye is near the bottom of south wale,s, about 41/2 hour drive, a long way to go to see a pile of poo !. The seller seemed straight enough, but then he,s selling the car, he,s there to tell me what i want to hear. I like the look of this car, i no lacedr,s car looks to be a good honest motor, if it was a year or so older i might have gone for it, but its more than i have to spend at the min. . . and i really fancy an erlier car, i just love the look of the cookie cutter,s, dont no why, just think the 944 looks tremendous on them, like i said before, i hope i dont live to regrett this. . . . , Dave

Just a piece of personal advice.....like you I was looking for an early car I too liked the square dash but I took a lot of advice and ended up buying a oval dash model 2.516v I'm glad I did, reason being is several 1. Try finding one without a cracked dash, they look awful 2. Early cars had metal fuel tanks, they rust and leak! Later model had plastic tank much safer 3. Electrics are much better 4. Suspension and geometry is much improved , porsche spend a lot of money making the later model a lot better. Don't get me wrong if you can find an early car in good enough condition then go for it but in average condition just be carefull, I actually love the oval dash, what ever you decide I wish you luck.

Reality check time. If lacedr's car is more than you want to spend, and you want something even half decent, then a 944 isn't for you. I'm a massive fan of the 944 in (almost) every format, but to buy a car that someone else has lavished money and love on, you'll need to be prepared to pay your appropriate share. So if your budget is in four figures and starts with a 1, it'll be a tough search. Might be fun though...!

Hi Lance, the car i,m looking at, according to the seller, HASNT got a cracked dash. . .we shall see no doubt, as for the fuel tank and electrics, i cant comment on the the ones in the car i,m looking at, as for the suspension, i,m reading reports that the early cars are more fun in the handleing department, bit more chuckable if you will, i can only go of what i have read, unless you no any different. . . , Dave ORIGINAL: Lance Just a piece of personal advice.....like you I was looking for an early car I too liked the square dash but I took a lot of advice and ended up buying a oval dash model 2.516v I'm glad I did, reason being is several 1. Lacedr,s car is more than i have to spend, yes, but there are a lot of cars out there for a fair bit less money, i no i wont get a mint one for the cash i have, but i,m preppared to do a bit of tinkering myself, i work in a garage so have access to all workshop facilities, i have seen cars for less than £1000, but i no they will be trouble waiting to bite me on the arse, i could probably push to £2000, a bit more if i wait untill next year, but i think prices will go up as winter breaks . . . . .the car i,m looking at was owned ,so i,m told, by a porsche enthusiast, who bought it while his 911 was being restored, he did the important job,s, clutch, belts, w/pump, sorted the electrics out, sounds like a fair car to me but i thought i,d ask for an honest opinion or two. . . . and like you said, it could be fun. . . . . Dave

Well, i have one it, i have found a car, not the one i wanted, but a good honest 1986 lux. . . . . . . and yes, its lacedr,s, i have thought about it for the last two weeks and last night made my mind up, to go to Ross on Wye. . . . then this morning,. . .i changed my mind again. So Tuesday i shall be meeting Dave and driving it home. I would like to thank everybody here for all there help and advise, i really would have been lost without you all. Now the hunt shall begin, i no the car has nice wheels. . . but i still want some cookie cutters, so if anyone has any ideas, or a nice set with good tyre,s they would like to swap me,, let me no eh. . . . . Cheers again, Dave[:)]

Nice one Dave, give me a shout when you've got it - always nice to see another one in the area! The Region 3 club night is on this Weds just round the corner from you (Dun Cow at Bournmoor 19:30) if you fancy it?
