Hi

Just about to buy my first Porche and wonder if anyone could advise.

Looking at a mint 911 3.2 Carrera, turbo look, 20k miles, full Porche service history, unmarked.

Could someone give me an idea of the price this should be ?

Its my Dads (he's switching to a 997), and I want to make sure I give him a fair price and they are so hard to find like this that valuing it is hard.

Oh, and I think I am correct in saying it can run fine on unleaded petrol, but would it run on 95 or would I have to run it on 98+

if its your dads I'd only give £1500 for it[:D]

seriously though it could be worth anything from £10-16k depending on condition and history

unleaded is fine, I run mine on either 95 supermarket stuff and 97 BP Ultimate, I see little difference if maybe a touch better mpg.

I think you'll find a "mint 911 3.2 Carrera, turbo look, 20k miles, full Porche service history, unmarked" would probably fetch nearer 20k. Average ones seem to get 15k with 70k+ miles on them!

Mint and 20K miles?! I agree.. Not much change from £20K if it's really in top condition. Anyway, don't worry about that.. Give him £12K and tell him you're doing him a favour!

Ah, Dads, they do suffer, dont they.Just think of all the money he spent on bringing you up, and go easy on him, for goodness sake.

Your not going to like this but......... if this is a Supersport M491 and its right hand drive 87-89 there were approximately only 75 made with G50 boxes. Its value is in the £23-£25k bracket as I know of the last few cars to have changed hands at mileages slightly over your Dads in top condition which have been bought/sold at these figures. If I have misunderstood your info and its not an M491 car ignore my price information !!!

I have mine insured with RH specialist car division and have a agreed value at £24500 so i guess that dixhuit is in the right price range.

Ok, deal made

As long as he promises to get the 996 he's looking at, iv'e offered to take it off his hands for 10k.

Dont' think its a supersport though, will post more details once the garage is cleaned out, and a kid proof screen installed in 1/2 and the car moved up :)

You stole from your dad!? Have fun [:D].

Wanted this car from him for the last 15 years, can't believe its finally going to be mine :)

Its in very good conditions, but has only been run every 6 to 12 months for the last 12 years (as he has lived abroad all that time).

Its always taken to the local Porsche garage for a service when he's been home and never needed any remidial work due to the storage but is their anything I should look out for (other than the normal tyres for cracking etc)

Its not been used in the rain much but I wonder about driveshaft gaiters etc, any advice ?

Its going to be fun learning to drive this car, coming from the security of a 350bhp EVO with its active stability system means this car could be a bit of a shock to the system !

Are the PCGB track days good natured and a safe(ish) place to drive the car ? Dont' want to take it on a track day with a bunch of Impreza hooligans.

A Porsche at last (and I've leant to spell it properly :) )

Gary, dear boy. PCGB trackdays are not like the public ones, you know.Instead of being savaged by massed Radicals and Caterhams you will meet a bunch of gentlemen exercising their motorised carriages in a genteel manner. Apart from the GT3 and RS mob.
Go for it. You have nothing to fear.

Glad to hear it John, might give it a whirl.

On a different note, I now don't feel guilty as my dad has just ordered a 997, so he's happy too.

Need to find insurance next, just had my car stolen last month so I've lost a bit of NCB. Any advice on companies, direct line want £827 which is slightly more than my last car, expect that I can't get classic insurance until 2009 ?, would like it a bit cheaper as I need to insure three cars now.

I'm with Lancaster under a classic policy, they're abit looser on vehicle age than others. Mines an 1988 Carrera, 4-5 yrs NCB I think and it comes in under £500, parked on driveway max 7k miles p/a

Try Mannings. Have been with them for three years because the premium was keen and they throw in approved (ie PCGB) trackdays for free, subject to a relatively small increase in the excess.

Welcome to the fold.

Try out classic line, just renewed mine with PCGB track days included and european brake down for £327. You don't have to wait until 2009 for classic insurance.

RH Specialist are also good, but don't do track days, and this years renewal was £340, so Classic Line were slightly cheaper.

Sorry if to ask, but what is a M491?? is it a std super sport 87-89??

M491 is the factory option that is " Turbo-look" .It was officially called a Supersport (SSE supersport equipment) here in the UK 87-89. However this Option was available before 87 . It was first used on the 1970's RSR's
There is technically no such car as a "Standard" Supersport . M491 on 87-89 cars be they Coupe/Targa/Cab meant :
1) Wide body
2) Turbo (930) cross drilled brakes and four pot ali calipers
3) Turbo suspension. Turbo front/rear spoilers. 7" front 9" rear. 16" diameter Fuchs.
My research with the factory has indicated less than 30 RHD examples all bodies were made in each model year so its quite rare
Hope this clarifies just what M491 is
