New owner (with any luck)

ORIGINAL: idc1873

Cheers, so ive got a 87 M491. Thats why it took me 3yrs to find mine.

If you would like to e-mail me with your chassis number. I will check its known to my records or if not add it. I have been doing loads of research on M491 with the help of Club and Porsche in Germany. Hopefully I will be ready to publish a definitive article in PP in the next six months. Meantime enjoy the car
Cheers

any idea how i can find out previous owners Re: history of it or any receipts they may still have..

This should be an 87 Coupe. This is a new car to me. Clubs database on the 3.2 register might have this recorded if you give them the reg no. I have analysed it and tried to pick up the Supersports. (Unfortunately they cant be identified by chassis numbers, so unless it was put on the register by a previous member and listed as a Supersport its in the "ether"). So it may be known as just a 3.2 coupe. Thats why the only sure way to know its a Turbo-look (Supersport) is the vital M491 Option code under the bonnet and in the handbook
p.s. yours is now one of only 37 Coupes 87-89

.

The car sounds like a M491, got the Fuchs wheels, spoiler, wide body but I can't remember it having cross drilled brakes, will have to look at the option code when I finally get my hands on it.

Got to divide the garage in two first by putting up a partition wall, can't risk the kids getting anywhere near it !.

On another note, Dad's 997 has now arrived, need to get a picture of the pair together.

Seeing as i couldnt find the M491 option anywhere i tried Porsche themselves.

Porsche Classic service Marc Noack, Marc.Noak@porsche.de

Gave him the details of my car and he email me my cars details, from the date it was delivered to the uk, the specs etc and all the options that it came with and there it was the 491 option. Why its not showing on your data base i dont know.

Hope this helps in anyway.

My data is based on known cars that I have been able to identify from the 3.2 register. So I have had to rely on someone identifying their car as a Supersport.
If they just listed a 3.2 and a chassis number this doesnt identify the wide body.
So its been a long task with various requests to owners to identify if they had a Supersport. I have had numerous conversations with Mark in Germany and also Deiter Landberger but unless you have a specific chassis number to identify, they are unable to confirm precise numbers.

Got the registration document today and its listed as a 3.2 Carrera sport.

Its got the turbo body and the wheels to match but not the suspension or the brakes, but its still a fantastic looking car and sounds fantastic.

Still need to clear the garage space before its moved up here, can't wait.

Looking at the PET, it seems the M491 has most of the turbo parts, a lot of items are listed Carrera turbo/M491.

It is going to take some learing after having active yaw control keeping things tidy.

As an aside, the original owner was David Davis from Hull.

Anyone know him, if he's an enthusiast he might be interested to know where the car is now.

Used to run with the reg A 911 RAT

The log book wont tell you if its a Supersport ! You will find the code 491 listed under the bonnet on a factory list of all the options (chassis no etc) or else the same list appears inside your handbook

Well, got the car at last (will get some pics when I replace the camera that was stolen with the Impreza)

Wow, love it.

Feels special, looks great, sounds like no other car. Seems to be in good original condition and everything is working.

Heat/vent controls are currently a complete mystery, can't remember what each little toggle switch does.

930.20 Engine
G50.50 Transmission No LSD

Option codes
C16 UK car
058 Impact absorbers front & rear
243 Shorter gear shift leaver
330 Radio Blaupunk Toronto SQR 46
335 Automatical safety belt, 3-point, rear
383 Sport sear left, electrical, vertically adjustable
387 Sport sear right, electrical, vertically adjustable
425 Rear window wiper
473 With front spoiler and rear spoiler
474 Shock absorber (sporting) front and rear
490 Sound system
494 Additional amplifier
567 Windshield tinted, upper part darker coloured
650 Electric sliding roof
975 Luggage boot trip with velour carpet
No 491 code, so not a supersport.

It does not specify wide body anywhere. It has the 225-50R16 wheels at the back and the arches look flared to cover them, does that make it a turbo body, or did they just flare the wings more on later cars.

Not got the performance of my last two cars but I think I will be keeping this for many years.

with that tyre size it sounds like you have 7" on the back, so I doubt its a Supersport which would most likely have 9" on the back and 7" on the front. Sounds like you are getting abit confused with the wide body look. Post some photos and we can then see what it is.

Its certainly not a supersport, just a boring old 911 [;)] with sports suspension, front and rear spoiler option and a short gear stick

Always thought the 'narrow body' did not have flared arches, but I don't now think its a turbo bodied 3.2

Still, great car. Will post pics when I buy a new camera.

Gearbox is a delight to use, positive and smooth, clutch is smooth and progressive. Engine note changes as it comes on cam, not any induction jiggery pokery is there ?

My only worry is that I will miss having less than 300bhp and want to swap it for a 930 !

The supersport has the 9" rears which are shod with 245/45/16 size tyres, and the rear arches are VERY wide [:D]

Now I am confused

The rears are actually 255/50's (fronts 205/55)

So that must make it a turbo body to fit them underneath ?

Your car is definitely not a factory delivered wide body. It has to be option M491"Turbolook" (the correct factory designation) 3.2 engine or a 930 (Turbo engine) for that to be . The tyre size and rim width/diameter can always be changed after purchase. Obviously the offset of the rims is vital but spacers can allow different ofsets to be fitted. All of the factory wheel/rim/offset options are listed in the PET catalogue. But Ive seen speedline/BBS and even cup 2's fitted to 3.2's. Its whatever floats your boat.

those tyre dims are exactly what my standard carrera body has underneath the arches, fitted to 6x16 frt and 7x16 rear.

Post a picture of you car, that will solve the question.

turbo body/wide body

standard SC/Carrera body, note the rear arches are wider than the early 911 below, suspect this is yours
911sc.jpg

narrow body, rear arches are almost flush with the rest of the body, same with the fronts, early 911

And here is a side by side shot. The red car is a 'standard' bodied car and the cabriolet has the 'turbo look' option.

If you sit down behind your car and it looks a bit like this:

or stand off to one side and it looks like this:

You have a turbo body [8D]

But obviously this does demonstrate whether or not it is a genuine factory fit fat ass or not. To be honest who cares, unless you paid top dollar for it. If you the car is in good nick and you love it and paid what you consider to be a decent price for what you got, it doesn't matter, just enjoy it for what it is.

I sat behind a gorgeous wide bodied SC at last years TIPEC and it looked the business, and it certainly wasn't genuine. It might have been the car recently featured in one of the mags, might have been a 993 or supercharged engine under the cover, but still badged as an SC, lovely.

Will post some pics as soon as I get a new camera (last one was stolen with the car)

Its amazing, it looks very wide at the back until you look at a turbo body. The wheels look standard and were on it when it was bought at 2 years old, but the tyre sizes don't match the manual.

It was also interesting to note that the amount of rubber put on the road by the 205 tyres was greater than that of the 225's on the Impreza.
