Newbie - My first Porsche

......Its very uncommon for a non turbo car to have both leather seats and A/C they would have been very expensive options at the time of purchase. For very little more you could probably have bought a Turbo which has both as standard I believe. ......

Not when the original buyer bought the car in 1983. The Turbo wasn't announced until February 1985. [;)]

Mmmm oops engage brain operate mouth.

Looks lovely Just needs some nice carpets in the front and it will look as good inside as out. Shame about the red colour lol.......

Why do so many people not like red? Surely it's the epitome of '80s Porsches!

Is it because of the inevitable fading, or some sort of inverse envy thing where you would really like a long, red car but don't have the confidence to carry it off.....[;)]

I think it's because really they wanted a red porsche but they bought it in a different colour because they're too much of a wuss[;)]

Certainly will try to keep it that way - now too scared to drive it until the belts etc are done. For a full "kit" I have been quoted ÂŁ168.20 - from www.porscheshop.co.uk " Full Belt Kit 8v -86 Includes cam & balance belt, cam & balance belt tensioner, cam & balance belt idler roller " can anyone tell me whether I should also do the "Cam belt Guide rail" ?? and any other hidden bits I need ??
Also the water pump is listed at ÂŁ144 is that about right.
Anyone used this firm and know what they are like?? Was hoping to drive the car to Le Mans but now looks like I'll be a passenger in my mates Mini Cooper as i'm not driving it until this is done so at the moment its an expensive (but cool) ornament.
Cheers again

How many bad things can I say about red (aka dark pink).

Red fades. There is no doubt that a bunch of red 944's looks very dramatic but (particularly because of the shape of the 944) they look a bit like you wanted a Ferrari but couldn't afford one. Red fades. No interior colour looks right with red. Red fades. Red looks very 80's. Red fades. The only cars that look right in red are Ferrari's. Red fades. When the Boys in Blue are playing car snooker they need to pull lots of red cars. Red fades. Oh, and did I mention that red fades.

And don't get me started on Porscheshop. Belinda has permission to take me outside and shoot me if I ever suggest I am going to buy anything from Porscheshop again. It would be far less painful in the long run.

I'm not going to justify your obvious attempt at humour, Mr Sims.....[;)] Oh, OK - I will....

How many bad things can I say about black (aka dark grey).

Black is a pig to keep looking clean. There is no doubt that a bunch of black 944's looks very dramatic but (particularly because of the shape of the 944) they look a bit like you wanted a silver car but couldn't afford one. Black is a pig to keep looking clean. No interior colour looks as good in a black car as it does with red. Black is a pig to keep looking clean. Black looks very 80's. Black is a pig to keep looking clean. The only cars that look right in black are hearses. Black is a pig to keep looking clean. When the Boys in Blue are playing car snooker they need to finish with an extra-special flourish on a black car. Black is a pig to keep looking clean. Oh, and did I mention that black is a pig to keep looking clean?

Hi T

I'm quite new to the forum lark as well, this lot have a very particular sense of humour, I think their turbo's must be leaking into the cab, it's a loveley looking car and you've got aircon, I only have one suggestion get some gaurds on your wheel arhes as the stones will play havock with them, I didn't and I know have a paint job to sort where there wasn't one when I bought it. Oh and until recently I always got mine serviced at an OPC they give labour discounts on cars over 10 years old (that's all of us) and you get to have a courtesy car too, see how the other half live then you appreciate yours more when it comes back.

Martin's right - you will have to get used to both the sense of humour on the forum, and the way that every thread moves off-topic very rapidly.....[8|]

John Sims, in particular, is only allowed to post when Matron feels he's been behaving himself. Please don't take his criticism of Red 944s as being personal - he's like that with everybody....[:D][:D]

So true. You also forgot to mention that you are more likely to have an accident in a black car because people don't see you coming. Stealth isn't always an advantage.

I was going to say that the only way to keep a black car clean is to leave it in the garage, but that doesn't work either.

But have you noticed that a few years ago the trendy colour for your TV and audio gear was silver. Now all the adds are pushing how trendy black is. We'll soon be back round to sapele veneer doors and then the slippery slope to mock Jacobean antique oak furniture.

Black is the new black. Red is only any good for stop buttons, Ferrari's and satin [;)].

She's out down the shops at the moment so I am making the most of my window of opportunity.

That's not entirely true. Well, no, it is true. However, my loathing for red increased when the Club wanted red, white and blue cars for Eynsham and red cars for MPH 07. It's about time black got a look in.

Tooooon, please ignore the red and black jibes. Next time I see them I shall make sure they all leave after being suitably disciplined and looking black and blue.

Porscheshop have a bit of a reputation of sometimes charging more than the official dealer and sometimes sending out the wrong part. However, the prices you quote do seem to be competitive, incuding the water pump.

I too would recommend you call Bert Gear at Berlyn Services http://www.partsforporsche.co.uk/ he is the clubs Technical Rep for 944 and know's his way round our cars inside and out. He will also tell you when you are better off going to the official dealer for a part.

If you ever need anything from the OPC then I recommend you call Chris at the Exeter dealership, he is particularly helpful to 944 owners and if you mention the club forum you will get a good discount and free postage.

I'm sure we can find some volunteers to put you out of our misery John ha ha [:D]

Did you mention how red tends to fade [:D]

Thanks yet again for the advice I'll give Bert a call and maybe pay a visit to a main dealer to compare prices. I thought going for the first listed advert from the club's main site would have been a good place to start now I'm glad I asked......

Have to say, I have had a very good experience recently with a chap called Max Schenker at Frazerpart. Very keenly priced, next day delivery, and a friendly feller to boot details thus:

Max Schenker

Tel. +44 (0)151 644 6433, +44 (0)7958 697333

Drop him a line, he comes recommended.

Oli.

Have you thought to try your OPC for your head gasket kit? I find that 9 times out of 10 and especially for service items they are pretty competitive and you usually get a discount even if you're not a PCGB member. Certainly for the service kit that includes oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, fuel filter and sump plug gasket they were the cheapest for me by the time you nett off the discount which is usually 10% - 17.5%.
