No more new 981 orders can be taken !

Also listening to such things on the speakers of our computers isn't going to give the best rendition of the sound sample.

The soundtrack did seem to show a lot of exhaust crackle as if on an overrun which my PSE does mainly when cold much better when warmed through but it would be nice to hear it driven with some effort such as on a track, at least soon we will be able to hear it for real then we can make a fair judgement.

Also, as Jeff said intake noise added to the exhaust sound changes the driver's sound perception and is the reason some wish to "Desnork" the side intake baffle and enhance the internal sound, not noticeable to an external observer.

Whatever the pros and cons of the flat-4 pot turbos, we have to accept that they're here to stay for the forseeable future on all Caymans and Boxsters - including forthcoming GT4 and Spyder variants, assuming Porsche's continuance with these money-spinners.

Like the introduction of electrically assisted steering on the 981 there'll be the usual detractors for a while but no-one's going to tell me that it will impact future sales significantly. It's the total package which is important and the number of true enthusiasts posting here and elsewhere represent a very small proportion of those purchasing these cars and we can't be arrogant enough to think that our views will carry much weight, although I hope that Porsche does take note of our opinions.

Agreed

Interesting points. The Spyder and GT4 aren't really about their engine. Yes it's unique for a Boxster & Cayman to make use of a 3.8 but as it's a donor engine I guess there's not yet a profile of the type of engine these types of car will have, like how we've come to expect a GT3 engine to exhibit certain traits compared to a standard engine. All we know is that the Spyder & GT4 got flat6 N/A engines this time but then there were only 6 cylinder N/A engines available. I couldn't therefore guess what the next GT4 and Spyder will have in the engine bay as there is no trend set, but Jeff's reasoning sounds as good as any and the choice of donor engines next time around that will fit will be more limited.

If not much of a engine choice for future Spyder and GT4 I guess it will be pumped up turbo 4 pot version.

Only time will tell.

The Spyder is not even on the web site in any engine guise to spec anymore.

I think you're right Cliff. These cars are more about the revisions to the chassis and steering and bodywork and a significant performance upgrade, not about having an engine from the motorsport department, so a a significant increase over a standard 718 could as you say easily come from the 4 pot turbo, just happened to come from the Carrera S 3.8 last time because the 3.4 was probably reaching the limit of what they wanted to do with it.
