Oil change

The S2 I bought recently has had little service since a major service at 98000 miles in 1998. I know the previous owner changed the engine oil himself regularly but he had no record of when. I plan to change the engine oil (Castrol GTX Magnatex) and filter, however as it's almost 7 years since the gearbox oil was changed (16,000 miles ago) is it advisable to do this also? If so, I gather that syntheic oil is best - any favourites? The car has now done 114000 miles.
 
Is Castrol RS 0-40W going to be OK for a ($$ S2 with 114,000 on the clock? At present it doesn't leak any oil,howver I'm concerned that 0-40W might be too thin. Would I be better going for a 10-40W?
 
If it doesn't use any oil then 0w40 is fine. Have a look back over all Oilmans posts he explains the viscoities very well.

The 0 weight means it is 'runnier' when cold than the 10 weight, but as they are both 40 weight when warm then they have the same viscosity at high temperature.
 
He's recommended 5-40W Silkolene or Mobil 1 0-40W, but I can't get it locally. I can get unbranded 10-40W or Castrol RS 0-40W so was thinking of using the Castrol. I know it will be a thinner oil and could cause some seepage where the engine is not oil tight, but my engine seems free of any signs of oil leakage, so I thought the Castrol would be OK.

His prices for synthetic really are unbeatable (especially if you buy 2-4 containers). Last year he quoted me ÂŁ108 delivered for 4x 5 litres of the 5W40 and ÂŁ61 delivered for 2x 5 litres. A 25 litre pack was ÂŁ125 if you want to share with someone local.
 
I want to do the oil change this weekend so didn't have enough time for him to deliver by Friday. I can get the oil locally tomorrow and do the change.
 
As for the gearbox oil, it depends if you have a LSD or not. The weight of oil is still the same, but the LSD requires friction modifiers. It's probably on that post, but I couldnt be bothered to read it!

check www.tech-session.com for reccomendations, and www.clarks-garage.com for the procedure. I did it a few weeks ago, and while the change is relatively easy, getting the bottle in the right place to fill it up can get messy!
 
I've just had my gearbox oil changed, and the gear change is a complete revelation. It used to always stick from 1st to 2nd especially from cold, but not any more.

It's well worth getting the gearbox oil changed.
 
Big Les. Go for the oilman offer. Got delivery from him on a next day basis and changed my engine and gearbox oil for full synthetic silkolene. There are loads of people around that claim synthetics are the evil of all evils and will cause the car to spring leaks all over the place by removing glazing in the engine and deposits. They also consistently repeat the rubbish about 0W-40 being thinner and therefore making the engine noisier. Neither of these beliefs is true. My car is now quieter, smoother and would you believe faster with engine and gearbox oil full of synthetic. I believe many people are comforted by repeating what they have heard others say as if it signifies membership of some exclusive club. The level of comfort is the same even if they are repeating complete rubbish. Comfort does increase if there is an intricate sequence of information involved or the subject is highly technical. Oil technology is a perfect example.

Basicly don't believe the bollox other's say!

I bought the Castrol RS 0-40W today and did the oil change. I'll get fully synthetic for the gearbox in the week and do that next weekend. I had a Mazda MX5 (don't laugh!) a cople of years ago and put synthetic in the gearbox on that and it did improve the gear change. My 944 is a bit notchy between 1st and 2nd whens it's cold, although OK once it's warmed up, so hopefull the change will improve matters.

I'll have to see how things go with the engine oil, if it springs any leaks I'll post it.
 
I posted a question about the leak issue for owners of 928s internationally there was one person!!! who thought synthetic oil may have caused a leak or louder tappet noise. So I think the odds are very very low. The notchy gearbox will definately improve with the synthetic oil change, Mine did. It was doing the same and now is much better.

Remember that Castrol RS is not Fully Synthetic.

It's one of the dino oils that has been 'synthetically engineerd' so is therefore a semi-synthetic.
 
I think you may find it is. I thought it was a semi but looked it up on the opie oils website and it is apparently a full synthetic.
 
Raise the headlights. This moves the mechanism out of the way and makes the oil filter much easier to get to.

You won't be able to pre-fill the new filter when you fit it, so don't rev the engine for the first 4 or 5 seconds when you turn it on for the first time after the service.

Oh, and there is too much oil in there to fit in a 4.5 litre drain tank, so make sure you have a bigger one than I do ...

Other than that, completely straightforward.

.....all straightforward apart from the oil gushing out of the filter as you remove it & running down the side of the block over the arb, pas etc.. & onto the undertray [:(]

that lindsey filter with the replaceable element looked a good idea
 
It's worth putting a plastic bag round the filter as you undo it - this helps to catch the oil as you unscrew it. Still messy though.
