Oil change

Using a top quality synthetic oil is also a must in my opinion. Synthetic oils are more resistant to breakdown from contaminants (e.g. products of combustions, petrol, water) and are more resistant to the degradation effects of high temps.
 
Just a thought guys but what is the feeling about fluid extractors? I find the concept tempting from a cleanliness/environment point of view since it lessens the chance of spillage (except the filter removal or course) and of course you get a handy container to take to the dump to poor it out again. Seems to really make much more sense when doing coolant changes however.

Quicky question but has anyone seen one of those cheapo fluid transfer pumps recently? ISTR one a few months back for a fiver that was ideal for filling the gearbox oil.
 
I'm not sure exactly what you mean by fluid extractors but i'd love one of those rotary hand pumps for the gearbox oil change. It was a real pain in the bum last time I did it with one of those big syringe things.

Damn I just bought one of those syringe type things for 6 quid (Sealey or Draper can't remember).

The fluid extractors are just a big container with a vacuum pump on the top and a long tube to poke down into the engine. Some of them seem to be driven by workshop compressors and some have a hand pump on the top.
 
Neil, I just found that the syringe thing I used couldn't suck oil up so I had to keep unscrewing it to fill it up. Hopefully the one you've got will work properly. If it could suck up oil then it would be a good piece of kit making the job a piece of cake.
