OPC is having a laugh!

OK, I know I shouldn't write posts when I am angry, but I can't ever see myself calming down on this one...

Just been given a quote by my OPC for what my trade-in Carrera S Cab is 'worth'...

£57k (and probably £55k when I get my new Turbo in Dec) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! []

This is an £85k car when new and only had 15,000 miles on the clock.

Just a brief search on Porsche's Used Car Locator shows cars with less spec than mine selling for £69k at my own OPC!! How can they justify this?

http://ucl.porsche.de/ucl/plsql/uk/clients.show_car?sid_=06181587B4F28F512D18B13451B4D7C&pnr_=2&lnr_=1&caller_=&grpid_=

OK, so I think I am going to have to sell privately. I didn't want to do this because of the hassle of people playing you about but I don't see I have a choice.

If my OPC is going to stick my car back in their showroom at £70k then I think someone at least half-sensible will be prepared to pay me £65k for it privately.

The car is a total gem, it's a massive spec, and it's MUCH faster than it used to be after the engine has been run in properly. I haven't tracked it and I have looked after it like it was a member of the family!

In fact, my soon to be arriving Turbo is not THAT much better than my Carrera! I am only really getting it because it may be the last chance I have to spend money on a supercar before my money priorities change and I start having kids.

Hmmm....

Oh welcome to the harsh side of Porsche ownership! Selling privately seems to be lottery. I've sold two Porsches privately (sub-£20K) no problems, but once into the serious figures dealers offer so much more with finance packages, warranties etc.
Unfortunately specs at purchase bear little or no fruit at trade-in time, Just the next punter gets a better deal. I believe most main dealers look to get at least £6K as a margin - because they have to do a warranty, PX,. vallet service etc etc. plus pay commissions and maintain the plate glass showrooms.
When I was selling both my 993-4S and later the 997S each time I had someone who was absolutely hot for the cars - but come the day to stump up the dosh......
You could try a 'commission' sale at one of the PP traders - it 'may' result in an extra grand or 2 but dont hold your breath[&:]
I'm still wrangling with the thought now about when is the best time to jump out of mine to avoid a big hit - trouble is, I just love the car! Just glad I didn't pitch in earlier and buy one of the last of the 996 Turbo S's - that would hurt!

I can do finance for private purchase 911's so if you want some assistance with selling i.e. you can offer finance + I can help the security issues in passing of title, naturally would be credit checking the buyer and payment from high street bank before buyer collects the car.

Just a thought.....

Is it worth getting a trade in quote from another dealer? It's probably worth looking to sell it asap and using a rental car till December. I would be tempted not to give your OPC the business if you can get a TT from somewhere else.

Would lose my deposit now if switched OPCs for my TT - so they have me over a barrel.

Thanks for the offer Jamie. Unsure how "I" would offer finance though...

Alex, do try other dealers for your trade in/sale of your current car, it will and can vary... I found a difference of 3K from one dealer to another.
I totally agree with Grahams comments, a 20K car is worth the hassle of a private sale, but the 60K private sale could be dangerous ground.. One dodgy bankers draft and the 10K undervaluation will pale away [:'(]

Last two cars I traded in were both marked up by 10K, I saw 6K mentioned earlier but my experience has always been 10.

I've said in earlier posts, you spend all that time with options lists etc but when it come to trade in they aren't worth anything to the dealer. Good words to remember was told to me by a dealer, to us its just an asset to make money..

Another note of caution as the dealer did it to me and I've read of two more occassions of the dealer agreeing a figure, exchanging and then knocking the valuation down further !!
They did it to me after they had taken the car off me two days previous!! they then proceeded to knock me down another £1800..
As I say there is a thread on PH about a very similar situation. Be sure that the price they agree is written down and agreed by the whole sales team.

Alex, I was offered £2k more on a trade in 2 months after my original quote from an OPC & an extra 1k on the clock ?!? It seemed very much down to the buyers status (some don't work for the OPC) and their current stock levels. I'd recommend giving Reading a call as their buyer came up with the best price, with no hagling from original offer. For the record I lost about £1500 for every thousand miles on my C2S (7500 miles when sold)

Sorry to play devils advocate here and I really feel the same about car dealers as you seem to but is the OPC quote really that bad? I would expect your car to be worth 55-60% of purchase price at the end of 3 years based on the hig end car market at the moment. Yours is now 27 months old. They have bid you 55k. I would expect that in 9 months time (June), the OPC would bid you, lets say, 48K? So at 3 years old your car would be worth 56% of what you paid for it. Is that really that bad? Just wondering to be honest.

I totally think you should go for the private sale and at 65k the car is well priced for a private sale. Good luck with it.

Who do you think gave me the quote in the first place?!

I wouldn't mind so much but I know they are going to add more than £10k on the car when they resell it, and my car doesn't need much more than valleting doing to it!

That's that option out then [] Mine was clean as a whistle & gone off the forecourt in a week for 7K more than I recieved, so I know how you feel.

You must remember that when it comes to second hand cars the sticker price is the tops they will take and often the actual price is considerably lower. We don't have this luxury when buying new Porsches (yet).

The dealers do have to turn a profit - they are not philathropists. It is all about negotiating realistic deals.

sold my 997 c2s cab 05 back in june offered good price from opc managed to get extra £1500 out of them offer i couldnt refuse, but next car wasnt going to be till march 08, but someone cancelled so 10/07 car now. checked price of my 05car on opc site gone down 4k since i sold car to them

That is a fair assessment.

Depreciation is the real cost of car ownership these days. Prices are at their lowest ever (in relative terms), running costs are modest and predicatable, and finance is easy to get. And, so long as people keep buying new cars with increasing regularity, there will be a glut of used cars looking for buyers. The law of supply and demand determines the prices.

It's not unique to Porsche. Highly spec'd prestige models from all brands (with some minor exceptions), are suffering at re-sale. The typical rate of depreciation on a Porsche is actually quite good at about 15% pa on the list price (but much more on most options).

And of course OPCs are in business. They will make you an offer, which you don't have to accept, on top of which they add their mark up, but must deduct prep costs, warranty costs, vat on their margin, part ex allowance or discounting, etc. It might look like they are making a big profit, but the best performing OPCs only average about 4% pa profit on their retail activities. The return on capital is pretty tight. Typically, sevicing and parts actually make more money.

Best to circulate the spec to a few other OPCs (in case they have a specific requirement for a car like yours). Or, try a private sale. The Sunday Times is apparently very good.

Unfortunately this is the reality of placing an order and relying on part ex.

In your situation i'd rather try my luck at BCA car auction tha let the OPC have it for that money.

You should also try the people advertising in the Sunday Times - i doubt Tom Hartley or Romans would be interested, but there are plenty of other people looking to buy up cars.

You could always try a call to Richard at http://www.cummingsofbodmin.co.uk/home.htm

Alex,

Welcome to my world !

Recently been through everything you are experiencing and it hurts.

Bottom line, you are going to get shafted every which way round, the sooner you come to terms with it the happier you will be.

The only sensible thing to do is cancel the Turbo order and get some propper use and enjoyment out of your current steed.

Fantastic as it is you will always wince when you remember it has cost you £50k to trade up and you are not enjoying it anymore than the C2S !

Wandering around Ragley last Sunday I realised ( too late ) that the important thing is not which Porsche you drive, but the fact that you have one in the first place. They are all fab in their own way.

Dump the Turbo and treat your motor to some tuning goodies.....

One last thing I would recommend if you insist on throwing 50 gees away is to give Gareth Williams @ Bespoke Automotive Consulting a call and see if he can find an outlet for you. Helped me out a few times now, including the disposal of my X51.

Regards

Yves

This doesn't fill me with warm feelings, my 29 month old C2S Cab has a slightly lower spec and 22K.

Perhaps I'll have to wait until it is worth sub £20K, although that may happen sooner than I expected!!
