OT - What to get for xmass???

ORIGINAL: Fen

I've already got GTL and a steering wheel, so I just bought myself a radio controlled helicopter on eBay....[:D]
I quite fancied a helicopter or plane myself, ive had r/c cars for years now and currently own about 45 of them, ive had a fly of a helicopter a few years ago at the local flying club, much harder than it looks, its recomemded that for begginers that you get one with wood blades as when you crash land they snap rather than twisting the shaft or damaging the motor !!!

A lot of the RC helicopter forums recommend wooden blades also. Apparently there is also something about wooden blades which make them fly better as well.. but it beats the hell out of me how this works.

It's funny there are so many GTL and steering wheel replies because I've asked for a new wheel to replace my ageing one. I had a go with Tonys Logitech Force Feedback wheel last week and suggested a few changes to him and since then he's out qualified me in both our Pistonhead league races on Sunday evenings [] I need a Logitech wheel.

Our current championship is nearly finished and is currently led by three 944 drivers [:)] so if anyone wants to join for our next season then sign in to the Pistonheads Gassing forum and join up and you too can look like the idiot below

I've bought a certain someone a steering wheel and a copy of GT Legends so you may well have a newbie for the league!

I was at motorscope in northallerton a few weeks ago and the have a proper bucket seat mounted on a metal frame with the steering wheel attached to plug into a pc or game console. Ive got a spare cobra imola bucket seat so i might have a go at making one when i get time. Just got burnout revenge for the xbox the idea is to hit as many other cars as possible which im very good at !!!

I have a spare linen pinstripe half leather seat mounted on some 2x3 for racing games [:D]

Crashed my heli already; minor damage to one blade which I guess means it is written off, so I need to order a few more sets of spares I think.

i've got a heli don't use it much at the moment but this one has carbon fiber blades and when I got used to flying it I was actuallty able to fly it upside down and cut the grass with it but at the moment one of the blades is broke after I hit a stone with it ah well gonna cost £30+ for a new one I'll leave it for a while I think.

Pah that's nothing! [;)]

After I've had another glass of sherry and one of me Mums mince pies I'm going to reverse the motor on my HoverMower and get it to suction itself to the ceiling [8D]

Could be the natural flex of the wood?

Well done Sian - tell him to get the virtual panel beaters ready, coz we are 'takin him out' at the first corner [:D]

How about a home cinema?

For a less than £1k you can get a very decent home projector, once you've watched your DVDs on a 4m wide screen with surround sound there's no going back.

I got my son to build me a media PC with two huge hard drives and a TV card. I have all my CDs stored as MP3 files and can queue up hours of music. The built in TV card means we can even watch TV on the big screen and/or record for future watching. I spent this summer doing some much needed home improvement so while I was at it I routed the surround sound cables under the floorboards and put outlet sockets in strategic places around the room so no ugly wires cluttering up the floor.

Great news! [:D]

One of the other driving sims I play called Rfactor has just released today a mod for the 1979 F1 cars. I was 13 back in '79 and had most of these cars for my scalextric (I still do in my playroom in the loft, errrr I mean my sons playroom [;)])

Mine is on its thrid set of blades, second main drive shaft and it has a hole in the front of the canopy. It's a tricky little blighter to fly.

How are you guys getting on with your R/C helicopters?

Are you anywhere near as good as this video I just spotted on the Tipec forum:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5914999402901911766

By the sound of it Fen has performed all of the moves in the video....just not recovered from them quite as well.

I always wanted a helicopter, but on boxing day I saw a guy flying an F14. This had proper jet engines, retractable undercarriage, swing wings, the lot.....now that's proper R/C. It even sounded like the real thing and, because of the low cloud, when it went vertical you wouldn't know it wasn't real.

Due to not practicing since christmas, I am still quite lame with my heli... I can just about hold a hover at will and move around...

But.. If the heli is pointing the wrong way, it all goes out of the window as I cant quite get to grips with just reversing some of the controls but not all of them.. So if it ends up facing me I end up flying the wrong way, realising it and then bailing out (dropping the throttle off) so I dont kill someone... Or I end up reversing all the controlls and flying into the ceiling when I really wanted to drop some height off.

Quite tricky, but very rewarding!

On google video there are tons of video with rc heli's and aircraft

John, try a search on www.youtube.com or video.google.com for BAE Hawk turbine.... there is a scale model radio control jet turbine red arrow, which does red arrow stunts and even has smoke it can switch on and off.... I want one of those!!! However, reality dictates that I would probably only own one for as long as it takes to fly it into some part of the scenery and then own an expensive pile of plastics and composites.

Have done [8D]. Fortunately, to balance my enthusiasm, there are also lots of videos of model jets crashing. When they crash it would seem you sweep up the bits and put them in a bin. There ain't nothing to salvage...so very realistic in that respect as well then.

I spent a happy three minutes of disbelief watching two guys fly a model 757. It had twin props rather then jets but still seemed to look and sound like the real thing. This thing had multiple wheel retractable undercarriage the lot. So as to ensure the greatest of realism they spent some time taxiing slowly around the runway. Peter, who was watching over my shoulder even asked "Does it fly?" Eventually it did......but at the end of it all I couldn't help but think......why bother?
