Plastic Window Replacement - Experiences here please?

Not sure Paul. You could try the man I recommended if you like. He is just next to Ikea. Sorry for the delay in replying to your post.

The man that I used for a complete new hood for my TVR and we also used for a plastic rear screen replacement is Willie Ramsay. His phone number is 0131 440 0555

Hope that he can direct you in the right direction if he cannot help you. I cannot praise my new hood enough, it is lovely [;)]

ORIGINAL: me

hi, i have a 2001 boxster s and yes ive had the split rear screen problem too.
i live 20mile north of edinburgh scotland, and have read these successful replacement (screen only) jobs that some members have had carried out, but they all seem to be down in england. Does anybody out there know of anybody that carries out that work nearer me please?

Sounds like a good excuse to put some miles on!

Hi

I've also booked my car in at the car hood warehouse for the glass screen replacement, £745 all in including VAT. I've heard some good reports about this family run business plus they said on the phone I could wait there and watch them do the whole process. They also offer a 1 year gurantee on the hood.

I have had my hood replaced today by Simon at Essential Styling based in Tring Herts. (I saw his add in the Porsche Mag), he was very helpful on the phone and had me booked in in a few days. I drove over to his workshop just outside Tring, he then dropped me off in town while the hood was replaced with a heated glass window type, this took about 3hrs and he then collected me again after I had consumed 26 cups of coffee in various coffee shops (take a book there isn't much to do in Tring!).

The new hood looks stunning making the car look new, it cost me £795inc VAT fitted.

As a foot note, I had a quote from a company in Wales, from what I can make out they actually manufacture the hoods, they were fractionally cheaper but for me, being from Essex, Essential Styling was the better bet, although the lady in Wales put me on to a hood specialist in London that they supply the hoods to who could supply and fit the same hood for £1400 + VAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any more?

Had a chap from Northampton call me today and I couldn't find anyone near (he was after the plastic replacement).

How did you manage to get it for that price? When I phoned them they quoted £945 fitted. My Boxster is a 1997 model is that the same as yours?

Thanks for the contributions on this topic, my brother split his rear window on the day the thread was started, after following the thread he now has a BAS International supplied and Car Hoods Northern fitted glass rear window hood. It looks great, has reduced noise with the hood up and is obviously more convenient. Car Hoods fitted the hood at his home (Nottingham) and made a superb job.

I had the plastic replaced on my previous boxster sometime ago (2yrs) now but the fella did such a good job he deserves a mention. He charged me £250 from memory and is based in Coventry, his name was Tony.
Since I started I have loked back at my E bay records for his details, his ebay trading name is softtops001. It doesn't surprise me to see he has 100% feedback. He unpicks all old stitching and uses the original holes to put in the new stitching as well as a sealant that is not visible. He does an incredible job and does sub out to Porsche who charge £600 for his service. I think from memory his business is called Tonys Soft Tops but I may be wrong. I 'd highly recommend him.

Further to my last and on the subject of plastic screens I ahd some cack handed salesman check the function of my roof in my absence whilst IO was shopping for my new stead...he put the roof back whist the plastic was cold causing a fold in the plastic and "whitening" where the plastic strained which even more annoyingly was bang in the centre of my rear view mirror picture. I took it home and managed to all but remove this damage by using a hair drier to gently heat up the plastic and stretch it back into shape. So much for specialist and this was an OPC! Claimed he'd never heard of the Boxster chop, total baboon!

had a replacement plastic screen done this week in the west midlands, a guy from walsall wood called dave hayden 01543 375437, specialises in upholstery repairs and soft tops coverings etc... charged me £250 and it was ready the next day, a nice neat job by all accounts!

Just had my roof replaced on 99 2.5 boxster by essential styling in Cheddington Bedfordshire, i believe they share there workshop with RPM. THe guy did a great job that took approx 5hrs and was a pleasure to deal with. So nice to have clear vision and not to get out and fold roof in half now days.

I'm getting my one replaced for a glass one on 3rd May by Hubbards in Loughborough. Three Boxsters being done on the same day so should make for some interesting pics......

Hi I live in Norwich and have never heard of Top Hoods, do you have a number or web address for them. Ta

Can anybody confirm if this is true. I am looking at replacing the hood on a boxster with the plastic window by the one sold that has the glass window. My local Independant Service centre says that if I do that then to gain access to the engine from above will mean that he will have to take the whole roof off. Apparently you can't fold the roof back properly to access the Engine as you can with the existing hood. I have seen lots of good reviews of people fitting the glass window version to earlier plastic window boxsters but nobody has made any comment on the restricted access. How bad is it?

I am also led to believe that the Hood on a BOXSTER S has a double insulated hood compared to a 2.7 model. Is this true? What are peoples comments on cabin noise levels on the aftermarket hoods version the old genuine one they replaced?

Await your comments

Thanks

Boxster S Model 2001

I've heard that OPC's don't like them as the access is restricted, but that's all - it's a little more awkward, not impossible. I'd say that removing the hood entirely would be a bit of an over-reaction...
(For instance, I had my car serviced recently at Porsche Reading, it now has a glass aftermarket hood. They didn't even mention it).

The lining in the S is retained and used in the new hood. It's a seperate item and not part of the roof covering.

MARK, THANKS FOR POSTING A RAPID RESPONSE. WHICH MAKE OF SOFT TOP DID YOU FIT TO YOUR CAR? I AM LOOKING AT METROPOL BLUE FOR MINE. WAS THE COLOUR GOOD ON THE ITEM YOU PURCHASED?

REGARDS

GRAHAM

Hi Noggin,

I had mine done at BAS International.
http://www.car-hood.co.uk/

Fit and finish is identical to the original, they do a range of colours, but as I have a black car, mine is black.

I can't reccommend them enough. Very happy with it.
