Porsche 911 escapes from Zimbabwe

Thanks Phil and Robin for your messages. Yes, it will be a while before the car will be sorted - not because there is so much work to be done on it, but because I have asked Andrew Kirk to take his time, and he needn't be in a rush. I won't be able to drive the car, or any car, for a while because tomorrow (Sunday 29th) I go to the Glan Clwyd Hospital, Bodelwyddan for major surgery, or should I rather describe that as a 63000 mile major service? I expect to be firing on only 5 cylinders for a while after discharge, but I have every confidence that the experts will get me running like a 911 again very soon!

Good luck with the service . . . .. I reckon I'm about due for one [;)] . . . in all seriousness . . . . hope it goes well.

Things are progressing!
The car was released by customs on 29th Sept, and was taken by road to Birkenhead on Monday 9th Oct. Many thanks to 912UK and to Andy Wishart who did the transporting. I travelled to Birkenhead and was delighted to see that the car was just as it was when I last saw it in Harare. It is now in the good care of Andy Kirk (a regular advertiser in Porsche Post), who is going to bring it back to life. Both Andys spoke approvingly about the condition of the car, which was very encouraging.

Andy is getting used to moving Porsches about. He did mine for years and now as we know each other very well, he very kindly alows me to use the lorry my self to move them about. Great guy to know even if he is a Pompy Supporter..:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: He also looks after the car as well not like other transport movers who see most cars as just another job. As car transport is only a small part of his company / companies. He also owns Strand Engineering a machine shop and Performance EFi the tuneing race prep company and a garage for local work. Busy man and a spitting image of Chris Moyels of Radio 1 , but still a pompy supporter..

Glad it went ok and good luck with the resto of the car..

Glad I could help..

First time I used Andy was in Jan 2000 when he kindly picked up my 356 and my 912 for about 1/2 of the cost of every one else.. for one car he did 2!!!

Being collected from Alan's paint shop where we did the top coats..And Andy dropped it off home before his home match ( Pompy mad!! ) [:D]

Thank you for your message, Robin.
On 29th Oct, I was admitted to the Glan Clwyd Hospital for major surgery the next day. I've been out of hospital for just over 3 weeks now, and taking things quite steadily. I'm firing on all 6 cylinders, but I'm keeping the speed at which I do things to about 2000 rpm! There is a possibility that I may need some more fine tuning, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
When I've got more news about my 911 and its 6 cylinders, I'll post it here.

Despite keeping the revs down, on Saturday 16th Dec, my engine stalled again and I was admitted to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd where I remained until the evening of 2nd January.
One darned thing after another!

Sorry to hear you're still not running right - probably like most of these early models, they refuse to run properly until the weather improves [;)]

Do get some rest and hope to see you out and about in your 911 soon [:)]

Philip

Hello Arfor, is there any chance you could post some photos of your 911 would love to see it! thanks.

Hello Stephen and good to hear from you.
As far as operating a computer is concerned, I am in the same league as Bill Clinton who reportedly described himself as a computer dunce! So posting photos onto the Forum is way beyond me, but as the saying goes, if I never ask, I'll never learn. So I'll try to find somebody knowledgeable locally who can show me how it's done. It might take a little while, but watch this space!

Arfor,

Don't worry - it's really easy. First question - do you have the pictures in a digital format on your computer?

If so, go to http://www.photobucket.com and create an account - it's very simple to do.

When you have your account, follow the instructions to upload these pictures from your computer to your Photobucket account.

Then, select the picture from your Photobucket account you'd like to post - highlight the 'address' (or URL as it's known), and then copy this into your computer's buffer (if you're using a PC, click the right hand mouse button - a menu will pop up - select copy, if you're using a Mac, hold the 'Apple Logo' key down and press 'C', then release the Apple key)

Create your new post on the PCGB forum and click the 'image' link - this will add two 'image' words in square brackets '[' and ']'.

Click your mouse BETWEEN the ']' and the '[' of the two image words and then either right click, bring up the menu and select 'paste' or if using a Mac hold down the 'Apple' key and press 'V', then release the 'Apple' key.

This will insert the 'address' (or URL) of your picture, hosted now on the Photobucket site - in between the 'image' tags - this tells the web browser to go to Photobucket and insert the image for you [:)]

Any problems - drop me an email by clicking my id 'pmjt' on the left of this post and drop me a phone number - I'll call you and talk you through it.

Nice to hear you up and about [:)]

Good luck!

Philip

I don't think Arfor has digital images . . . he did send me some proper paper pictures (which I returned). I scanned them, but can't seem to find them [].

Phil

Hello Phil J - yes you did indeed return the photos to me, thanks very much.

I know that it's rather cheeky of me, but I have suggested to Phil T that I send the photos up to him by snail mail, thus relieving me of having to learn new tricks!

Yes. I'm glad to say that I'm feeling much better now after a very rough period when I was in hospital over Christmas and New Year - two and a half weeks in all.

Thanks for the support - Arfor.

I know that it's rather cheeky of me,
Not cheeky at all he's the new Reg Sec.

Wish I could find the scanned images though (on my computer somewhere - perhaps deleted by mistake).

Phil

Hi Arfor,

Absolutely no problems - send the pics to me (I'll reply with my address in the email) and I'll gladyl scan them and set you up with Photobucket.

Watch this space everyone [:)]

Philip

I received some wonderful pictures from Arfor a few days ago - dug the scanner out and here they are. Arfor gave me a little history to share with us all - she is a VERY early (0009) chassis number 1969 2.0ltr T - originally the motorshow car, Arfor saw her at the show in October 1968 and she was exported to Zimbabwe by the first owner shortly afterwards - but it took a couple of years after until 1975 when he became the owner - having himself moved to Zimbabwe [:)]. I'm sure you'll all agree - this is one pretty early 911 [:)]

Thanks very much Philip for placing the photos of my car on the forum. It would have taken me a month of Sundays to do that. Now everybody can see what all the fuss has been about.
A minor correction to your opening paragraph (and at the risk of being seen to be a bit of a nit-picker), the first owner kept the car for a mere six months. The second owner used the car in the UK from early 1969 until early 1973 when he decided to emigrate to what was then Rhodesia. He had the car shipped to Cape Town, while he himself flew there, and drove the car from Cape Town to what is now Harare. For Customs purposes he was required to keep the car for two years after his arrival in the country, and I became the third owner at the end of that two year period. So I have now owned the car for close on 32 years.
Thanks again - Arfor

Arfor - as I explained, with her original paint she is what the American's refer to as a 'survivor'! I can't wait to see photos of her in the present day - beautiful car - wonderful to see her so preserved [:)]
