Porsche 911 escapes from Zimbabwe

I'm sure Arfor will chip in with the dates James . . . but they're defo not recent - 70's or 80's I reckon.

Ride height looks a bit high to me and there's a story behind the exhaust - think it was hand made over there (still has it on if I remember).

Phil

You're right Phil J, the photos were taken during the early 1980s, but although I say it myself, the car looks no different today, having spent the intervening years either in the basement of the motor dealership where I was working, or in my own garage which was semi-underground. So the African sun has had hardly any opportunity to burn the car to a frazzle. You are also right about the ride-heights. (well-spotted!) I think it was during early 1988 I took the car to Johannesburg for a major service, and had the ride heights sorted then. The gentleman who gave the car a thorough going over used to work for the OPC in Johannesburg before going into business on his own. He was also a member of the Porsche pit-crew when the 956s were competing in the 9 hour endurance races and later the 1000km, at the "old" Kyalami race track. I went down to watch those races, the cars being driven by the likes of Derek Bell, Jacky Ickx and, I think, Jochen Mass.
Thanks to everybody for the kind remarks. - Arfor

Arfor sent me a copy of Porsche Post from 1984 with an article on his car - I've included the scans of it - along with a picture taken with a friend's rally prepared 356 - I'll let Arfor tell the story [:)]

I came down to earth with a bit of a bump after I had worked out just when the photo of the 911 and the 356 were taken. It was December, 1975. The 356 belonged to my long-time rallying partner and great friend Mike Rademeyer, who sadly died in 1995. The picture was taken on the road between Bulawayo and Masvingo (formerly Fort Victoria); we were each travelling in opposite directions, and expected to meet somewhere on the journey. This photo is surely unique, for it can't be very often that a 911 and a 356 meet up somewhere in the middle of Africa.

And yes, I did get to drive the 356 on a couple of occasions. Great!

Arfor.

Greetings all - the saga continues.
My car is this month celebrating its 40th birthday, and is slowly being brought back to life, after having been in a state of hibernation for such a long time, and yes, it's still looking as good as it does in the photographs above.
But - I need help in finding a source of supply for:

The flexible fuel pipes which take fuel to the two Weber carbs, which have become hard and brittle. (After 40 years they are allowed to.)

Float chamber jets.

And I'm still looking for a replacement headlamp lens H 1.

BTW, the car has been fitted with its first replacement silencer in 40 years!

All advice will be much appreciated.
Cheers - Arfor.

Hi Arfor

Glad to see the cars is getting there . . . well done and keep going. As for jets, presumably they are Webers not Zeniths - might be worth clarifying (actually Zeniths were only 71 year if I recall).

http://www.christurner.com/ found me an H1 (but it was his last - appears to have stuff laying around so could help with the jets . . . . . same with http://www.transend.co.uk/ ). Other opition would be to go H4's (thus leaving any remianing H1's for me [:D]). Only egg-heads like me would actually notice.

Surely the pipe isn't anything special (e.g. at Halfords) . . . happy to stand corrected.

Cheers and all the best - Phil

Hello Phil,
Yes, the car is fitted with Weber carbs.
I'll give the two names that you quoted a try, and I'll keep you posted.
Arfor

Interesting seeing the old ones

Stopped for breakfast this summer just off ferry near Rotterdam and there was a 911E & 911T in car park with whitewall tyres[] obviously just repatriated from USA heading back to Germany

Beautuiful condition for age!

Best bit was A4 sheet of paper taped to dash with gear layout showing dogleg 1st gear
