Porsche-only trackday at Brands Hatch - Nov 30th

The track opens first thing in the morning, and signon/briefing will be from 730am. Schedule of the day is here: http://www.motorsportvision.co.uk/trackdays/event-details.asp?ProductID=3618

A few have asked - entrance is free if you are not driving and just want to come by and spectate!

Popped along and had a few passenger rides, in particular a very quick GT3, I think the driver was trying way to hard in the conditions while he was spanking the Cup Cars, we ended up in West Kingsdown Garden Centre[;)]

It was a really great day, but I have to say that Companies trying to sell their tuning wares should be banned from attenting what is an enthusiasts' day, or at the very least, have an allocated slot say 15mins/ 1/2 hr where they can go wild without endangering others. It was disgraceful and reckless, they ignored the no overtaking on a bend rule, and many occasions dived on the inside when about to turn into the apex. Have a look at some you tube posts and you will see what I mean.

I was only passengering, and thought it looked relatively well behaved, yes I did see some big boys darting round but they looked totally safe and knew what they were doing, the slightly slippy conditions did not help as this would not slow down the very fast professional drivers. Lucky the Atom/Radicals were not there, now they should be on different sessions.

I totally agree, it did seem pretty reckless. I was quite surprised. I was already close to one of the apexes when someone did dive through on the inside - put it this way, I got a very close view of his rear tyre - it could have been very nasty.
Exactly - what happened to the no overtaking on bends. Totally unecessary and I would have thought there may have been a little more respect for fellow Porsche drivers. Having said that I only came along to watch, then after a ride in a lovely 996 Turbo (thank you Dave), I thought I'd have a go. Oh and in a 993, I was one of the slowest on the track so was an easy target! It's just a shame I didnt get to speak to any fellow PCGB members. I think between all the GT3's, there was too much comparing sizes! Well aside from that, a big thank you to Jon Oakley for lunch, much appreciated.

I cannot understand why these guys (professional drivers / 3rd party companies) have dispensation to drive this inconsiderately. Overtaking on the inside line to a corner was very dangerous , and on more than one occasion I was about to turn in, when luckily I glanced in the side mirror and avoided a serious collision ! If they want to show "off" with their machinery, or driving skills, do it with other professional drivers and racing teams - however I suspect they would be at the "bottom" of the heap as why did they need to attend this event ! The GTR3's duelling running from the enthusiasts were great fun to watch - and they obeyed the rules !

Pictures from the day are now uploaded http://www.cannell.co.uk/BH301107.htm

I have just read some of the comments on this thread with interest and can perhaps clarify some points.

Parr Motorsport were present with their transporter that had two of the cup cars aboard - those of Steve Rance and Robin Clark, winner and runner up respectively of the 2007 Porsche Open Championship (Class 2). Both of these are extremely experienced and capable drivers.

During the course of the day photographing around the circuit I did not see any bad driving from anyone. While observing and photographing these two cars (and indeed on occasions sitting in the passenger seat for a number of laps) I can honestly say that I did not witness any suspect overtaking manoevers either on straight sections or during cornering.

Ther performance differential between cup cars and road cars has to be experienced to be believed, particularly in terms of cornering and braking ability, especially in the wet conditions that plagued most of the day. However, on the day both cars were fitted with passenger seats and were being driven for the purpose of passenger rides, and being driven at moderate rather than racing speeds. There was no competetive element between the cup cars and any other cars on the circuit.

Even so, they can appear formidably fast when approaching and overtaking and it was clear that mirror useage could have been a little better from a large number of the cars on the circuit, although the wet conditions were perhaps demanding more attention when cornering than normal.

All in all a good day out and nice to meet up with so many people at probably the last track get-together of the year.

It was a great day out! Despite the damp/grey weather, thankfully everyone returned home safe and there were no incidents on track.

The variety of cars was great, and the Cup cars certainly provided entertainment. I think the only issue was that they were inherently much quicker than other road going Porsches on track, and although they were driven well within their limits, some drivers were intimidated by the sight of a Cup car coming up behind them.

Hopefully this was a good taster for those who were new to track driving, and perhaps they will venture out on a drier/sunnier day in 2008.

I am sorry if I didn't get to say hello to a number of you given the format of the day, but hopefully we'll meet up again soon.

Cheers -

Spoke to a work collegue today, who at the same time unbeknown to me was driving on the "skid" track -Caterham, Go-kart at the same time as we were on the Indy Circuit. He and his instructors watched the Porsches' for a while, but he did tell me he (the BH instructor ) was staggered at the way the Cup Cars/ Parrs etc, were driving considering the pace of the other cars. Basically the instructor believed that there could soon be a serious accident - especially around Graham Hill and thought that they shouldn't really mix with the other enthusiasts on the same track.
Fundamentally the track day was an "enthusiasts" day for (mostly) private vehicles. Not a show case day for competition cars. Trackday organisers should make this clear.
