Hi all, having had my 930 for over a year now I have just begun the restoration proper.
Got some of the bits off the car ready to be transported to the workshop, starting to look better already without the boxed rockers!

Had a bit of a job getting it on the flat bed as we couldn't push it up the slope of my driveway entrance (good use of a bus stop!)

Got the car to the workshop to get the engine out

Good use of the seats in the meantime!?

Not a bad days work to kick off the project proper! :)

Hi there, looking like a good project, are restoring the car back to original ?
I'm just starting to restore my 3.0 Turbo, chassis number 930 770 0180, new 7th Jan 1977, what was the original colour of your car ?
Andrew.

hi andrew,

the car is going back to almost stock look. as the weather is rather warm here i am keeping the inter cooler so until i can afford a new intercooler arrangement thjat will fit un der a 3.0 turbo whale tail i will be fitted a 3.3 turbo tea tray to fit over my current intercooler.

the engine will not be stock either - it has motec EFi, SC cams and a HFS7200 turbo. i would like to put it back to stock one day, but the k-jet parts didn't come with the car so i will make do with what i have.

my car was first registered on 31 march 1977 in the UK but the log card states that it was manufactured in 1976, the car then went to Japan and then to Singapore in 1982. i got the a COA from porsche as follows:

the colour is going to be its original colour again though, which should look something like this:

fake rear air scoops returned to stock, drivers door rust sorted and replacement 3.3 wing repaired and fitted :)

it's great to see it taking shape, and it looks a lot better without the air scoops already!

thanks aldo, but i will be sticking with my stacked intercooler until i can afford the US$1,700 for the turbokraft one that will fit under a 3.0 tail :) (Which i can't afford yet either!!)

Santa came early!! shiny shiny me likey :)

Updates from the bodyshop:
How much filler???

Front wings off, rust in the usual places (trying really hard not to panic!):

Errr, starting to panic a little now!

But it's all good, one wing repaired already!!

Great to see the project getting started, and fabulous to see the original car underneath the 'added extras'. Pictures of rusty metal seem very familier from restoring my car four years ago. Can be very scary and I did question my sanity on several occassions! Will try and post some of photos of the sill replacement on mine, if only to amuse as to how the car stayed in one piece! :-/

now that the engine is apart i know it has the following:
newish JE 3.2 pistons and barrels
original 3.0 crankshaft (thankfully!)
SC cams
boat tailed crankcase
oil pump not looking too clever
one exhaust valve guide seized on valve
a lot of crap in the oil

the cams aren't in great shape - if i replace them should i stick with SC cams or is there anything else i should be considering? 964 or Ruf perhaps?

some of the cylinder head stud holes have helicoils fitted - should i trust them or spend a fortune having them removed and new threads machined?

does anyone what compression ration you get with 3.2 barrels (98mm) and the original 3.0 stroke (70.4mm)?

Great little project. The engine has already had a few mods. What d you plan to do to it mod wise? What is a boat tailed case. Do you mean boat tailed pistins?

Great pictures....

hi pete,
yes the engine already had it's fair share of mods so i'm not adding much else, just an uprated lube oil pump (a worthy investment i hope!). so it will be a short stroke 3.2 EFi motor with SC cams and a bigger turbo - should be fun!

boatailing is where the crankcase members are rounded off to improve the gasflowing in the crankcase in the underpiston space like this:

Looking good. I gasflowed my crank case the same. I believe it makes a small difference. I though boat tailing was removing some of thew tail from the pistons. Doesnt matter either way, your engine should be pretty awesome......What numbers are you hoping for?

here's my engine build: 3.5l Motec Engine

No turbo though [:(]

hi pete,

numbers wise i will be happy with anything over 300bhp which should be easily achieved - i am more keen on reliability that outright power.

some engine build pics:

new 996 turbo oil pump

P1131350.jpg

refurbished rockers with new bushes

P1131348.jpg

a pile of conrods (or is that a gaggle or conrods?)

P1131352.jpg

new valves

P1131353.jpg

coming together nicely after some serious cleaning!

and very nice video pete, i would love to a NA ITB build one day. i was orignally look ing for a an SC or a 3.2 to start my project but i just couldn't find one i was forced down the forced induction route.

That is looking very nice Mark. I love looking at the engine in bits. They are such technical engines..... Looking forward to seeing more.

Your bodywork images are a salutary lesson to anyone who buys a 911 / 930 with "just a few signs of corrosion".
Keep up the good work.
