Project S2, it's a biggun!

I got a few more jobs completed, adjusted the tailgate so it fits properly, started cleaning the interior - there is now no evidence that the engine ever used to be in the boot! I swapped the gear gaiter for a better one and discovered a mouse had been living in the foam sound insulation above the torque tube - the little blighter must have eaten about half of it judging by the mess! I guess thats always a risk when a car has been standing idle for so long, he did leave me some nuts though. I also removed the alarm, I had briefly mentioned it had 'issues'. After I first got the car running I left the battery connected & locked it, when the mrs got home I proudly unlocked the car & went to start it - all I got was flashing hazard lights & no start. A quick inspection showed no fuel pressure, this & the hazard lights pointed to an alarm fault, the fuse board was removed, & the fuel cut alarm wires bridged and it was all good again. To avoid any further issues I decided to completely remove the alarm which turned out to be a hamilton & palmer unit fitted in 1994 - the car was registered in 1991. The module was under the passenger seat & had got damp, the circuit board was quite corroded -

Today's task was rear brakes & tyres. The handbrake was only working on one side, a stripdown showed a completely seized cable and worn out shoe. And one virtually new caliper - result! You can also see the state of the tyres I've taken off....

Both cables were replaced but it was rusted solid in the tube where it enters the chassis - much abuse was dished out. The mechanisms were also greased as they had partially seized, plus it makes sense to do these little jobs while its in bits. The list is getting smaller - hopefully I'll get a few more bits done tomorrow.

There are still some little jobs to do - reseal the rear lights, fit a handbrake switch & a couple of small trim bits but none of these will stop me getting it MOT'd. Next week I hope to get it insured & booked in and then I can actually drive it, on real roads, in the sunshine. Since it is mor eor less completed I gave the turbo Golf a well deserved clean.
