They did it before when the fire proof gloves became required for sprinting etc. but not for circuit racing. Genius. I suspect you are right as its a bizarre inconsistency. Seriously thinking of sprinting the megane Simon in A4 but this is bringing me into that whole crazy is it a harness bar or is it a cage debate like we had on here a few years back, really don't want to mount shoulder straps to the rear seat belt anchor points as tried this at the start and doesn't work right with HANS, you get to much push on the shoulders and not enough pull of the front the HANS into the chest. Just resisting modding that car at the moment.

 
Id probably contact Martin at Rollcentre and see if he could make a rear without front hangers, complete with bar. They don't list a Megane but they can make one and its far from an obscure car.

 
I spoke to AWS earlier and they aren't sure what is happening yet, as they haven't received any guidance from the FIA.

I was told that all post 2001 manufactured suits were 'the same', but when pressed it appears that they aren't that 'the same' that they have the same homologation number...

I am broadly hopeful that they will be re-homologating my current suit though.

 
All equipment which has been homologated before 01.01.2013 will be homologated until 2017. After this date, the manufacturer shall decide whether or not it wishes to submit the equipment to the FIA for re-homologation. If they do, they must submit the re-homologation request in the same calendar month as the original date of homologation (e.g. a piece of equipment originally homologated on 1 January 2010 must be submitted for re-homologation in January 2017). All safety equipment homologated after 01.01.2013 shall have a homologation validity of 5 years

 
A quick look would suggest that they are end of lifing all current race suits unless their manufactures intervene.

I have come to this conclusion because the last new homologation for a suit was TS.220.12 - an R536 model Spacro in October 2012, so ALL suits are now good until the end of 2017 with no exceptions.

My own suit was one of the first (RS.013.01), but even the newest Sparco or Alpine Stars owner is potentially in the same boat.

 
Good detective work Simon, seems you have come to the same conclusion as me. The MSA in particular and to some extent the FIA need to provide clarification. They have it for example in the blue book section about belts where some words are added saying 'current homologation' or words to that effect which makes it clear that the belts are lifed. However one can't claim that something meets an FIA standard if its homologation is withdrawn as by definition it could no longer be claimed to meet that standard, as I am sure you have found the blue book just says FIA 8856-2000 for suits which then of course causes the issue we have been talking about here.

On the Megane the problem I can see is exactly the same as the one which led to that odd rear cage discussed on here a few years back. You have ultimately 2 choices; 1) Put in a cage which meets the blue book guidance which means unfortunately a much more extensive cage than I would like in a road car 2) Do something which isn't a cage but then has to pass scrutineering on the principle that its an item of equipment that doesn't within itself cause a hazard. The problem with this then seems to be that one can't then justify disturbing trim in the car such that it has to be a design that keeps the trim and rear seating etc. intact. I don't recall the debate from back then but this must have been the reasoning for the design of that thing which was really a glorified harness bar. Simon its not clear to me that a car in A4 could use an MSA rear cage only as the guidance says cars over 2 litres would need a cage with front legs? Seems an oddly arbitrary distinction but maybe I am reading guidance as verbatim rules.
