Re-think on colours following talks

Had a long chat with the head Sales guy at my OPC today.

Turns out that Black is THE best for holding value for resale. After this follows silver, and more so each month white ("the new black"). The issue is that my previous favourites Blue, Red and Olive Green will be worth between £6-9k less (blue > olive > red being the worst) come resale.

Resale value is a hot issue for me as firstly I am not made of money, and secondly I plan on trading in as soon as the 998 Turbo comes in.

So that leaves Black, Silver and White.

This is where the problems start. White is a little too stand out for my likes, I own a basalt black 997 now, and I am not convinced on silver for the Turbo.

There was a new flat black Turbo in the showroom today and I must say that it did look good "" especially with the lower spoiler lips/slats painted.

So what I need from you guys is some opinions on Arctic Silver.

Anyone got any feedback/pics on Arctic Silver you could share?

Yes I think those lower lip spoliers painted certainly make a difference IMHO.

Please could you throw me some pics? Either posting to this thread, PM'ing me or perhaps pointing me at some URLs where you have already posted?

Would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Black does look good on the 911. However as I say, I have basalt now so fancy a change.

Flat black would be enough of a change, and it does looks amazing when cleaned shined up - but to keep it there is going to be a full time job - and in this country's ever changing weather will prove frustrating.

My Audi is flat black and so I would be doubling my cleaning work load!

Then there is the paint swirls after 6 months. I plan on keeping the car until the 998 Turbo comes out - so about 4-5 years. So after this time the paint would be seriously affected.

P.S. Silver does nothing for the TT. I'm fed up with silver cars - even the police drive silver cars now! And, even though I never thought I would be saying this, I think white suits the TT.

I think if I want a really *special* car then out of black/silver/white it would have to be white (with some exclusive options).

So I may have to relinquish the last reminants of my shyness and go white...

VERY interesting idea - never thought of a black number-plate with silver lettering!! Is that offically acceptable?

illegal except on pre 1972 was my belief but then again the enforcement of all kinds of illegal plates seems very patchy

White is tipped to the next hot colour, but I expect that it will be trendy for a couple of years and then interest will subside. Black without a doubt looks the best when clean but it is also the hardest to get and then keep clean, and with the best will in the world you see swirl marks after only a few months.

I have an Arctic Silver 997S and rather embarassingly after 20mths of ownership actually polished it myself yesterday for the first time! I jet wash it once a month and have it valeted every 3 months or so but it was the first time I got my hands properly dirty. Anyway, it's a Jan 05 with 25k on the clock and I have to say, I am absolutely amazed at how good the quality of the paintwork is. Don't know what paint or lacquer Porsche use but it really does look like new even close up. Happy to email pictures.

You sound like me - always got one eye on the resale value, so whilst some would deem it boring, you can't go wrong with black or silver. Would have thought slate grey would be good too.

meteor also looks great (IMO).silver is easy to keepclean as mentioned but i am just SO bored with it.if youre not them i`m sure it will look fine[:D]

I LOVE Arctic silver, every time I come to buy a new slice of Pork I think must have new colour & then end up getting silver again, it just looks fantastic on most Pork.
Unfortunately the new Turbo is one of the few cars where I don't think it works very well, only because the car has so many BIG gaping holes that stand out in a light colour!

Personally I don't think the salesman is right with his statements, Atlas & Midnight blue are very close to black, but with a hint of variation, the dark greys like Meteor are also very popular. IMO white will be in fashion for a couple of years & then no-one will want one, just like the last time!

If it was my money I'd go dark on the Turbo, if I wanted nearest to black I'd get Atlas, the metallic sparkle adds a real edge & makes it look cleaner longer, but it still looks pretty black!

Or Midnight/Meteor can't see you loosing £5-6k over black/silver with those colours myself!

Of course it is really down to what you like!

I just want to clarify something quick:-

These resale differences are determined by the OPC and not what customers are willing to pay for similar spec'ed cars with different colours.

i.e. this is not what you would lose if selling privately, it's what you would lose if you traded in at an OPC.

The reason for this is the OPC relates how easy a colour is to sell on again after they take it in trade. Black apparently is the clear winner in this category, followed by silver, then white.

Personally I don't think white is a fad colour. It seems to be a long standing classic as far as I can see. My ONLY reason for questioning getting a white 997 TT is whether I will get TOO much attention in it. Other than that it seems to tick all the right boxes.

when is your final spec due, i put my final spec in on friday, then wonder if i made the right choice, and everyone you talk to have different opinions on colour and spec, bit like my other half shopping for shoes, also two people who live near me one has white turbo the other has cobalt blue

chris

I am collecting my 997 Turbo cab in Macadamia with cocoa hood from Stuttgart on 17th September.

I don't care what anyone else thinks. it's my choice, my car and if nobody wants to buy it when I'm done with it then I couldn't give a ****.

Having had black, silver black , silver and even a daring blue it's time to cast caution to the wind and be different[:)]

Light colours attract far more attention than dark in my experience - they are simply more noticeable. So if you want less attention consider black or slate/meteor grey - silver and then white are likely to increase the attention factor.
I've also seen midnight blue on a TT and thought it looked good.

I ran a slate grey 996 and come re-sale because it was a rare colour the dealers viewed it as desirable in re-sale terms, i.e. some of the premium colours can command good re-sale.

Not OPCs one salesman at your OPC, canvas more opinion from OPC buyers, I don't believe a different shade of dark will loose you £5-6,000 come trade in time, radical colours will, Atlas & Midnight won't!!

In the entire history of 911's how many times has white been popular? Long term?

Porsches have traditionally sold best in the more somber sensible colours I think this is because "most" buyers don't want to appear flashy in what is an expensive high performance, high C02 sports car.

But this a very expensive car, you want to enjoy it to the maximum, so if you like white buy it, don't worry what others will think, orange & yellow is far "flasher" & plenty of people buy those!
