REAR WIPER

Rear wiper a must. But under the "wish you hadnt" include 5CD changer and multi function wheel. And instead spec. sports chrono, not fully explained by salesman and so much more than just naff stopwatch atop dash, and if budget allows, the ceramic brakes, mine did not unfortunately.

mine doesn't have the rear wiper and i've never missed it, nor does my daily drive saloon car and thats never been a problem. Guess if you normally drive a hatch or estate then you might miss it, but only until you get used to not having one.

Rear wiper on a 997; is it one of those 'wish you hadn't' options, or a must?

Thank you everyone.

a waste!
car's aero's keep the rain off and just like the sunroof extra weight not needed

Agree with Sundeep on the rear wiper - unnecessary.

I'm glad I chose the 6CD changer, and not bothered about having chosen to omit the Sports Chrono, particularly given the issues when combining this with the Porsche Sports Exhaust.

Can't comment from experience of the Ceramic brakes - but supposedly long life, reduce unsprung weight etc are the main benefits, however given the issues with the previous generation of ceramic discs and the initial cost, personally I'd steer clear !!

Whatever you do, make sure you spec the "sports steering wheel" the BARGAIN extra on the list. It is so much more tactile than the standard skinny item, fatter rim, nicer to hold, so much more suited to the character of the car.

I strongly agree that the fatter Sports wheel is worth having - I have it on my C4S and it feels just right!

I strongly disagree that it's a bargain - £426 (IIRC) for a slightly fatter rim......WTF ???

Should be a no cost option, or maybe £100......

IMO the rear wiper on 911s is a waste. Doesn't have a washer and spoils the clean lines of the roof and rear screen.

Use Rain-X and the airflow keeps the window clean.

I think you must have specced the "smooth" leather one. The "three spoke sports steering wheel in leather" off the configurator that I specified is £140.

Couldn't agree more. Keep the clean lines of the car.

On the 911, there are the following options
  • Three-spoke steering wheel in smooth leather £147
  • Three-spoke Sports steering wheel in smooth leather £289
    [*]Thicker
Three-spoke Sports steering wheel in smooth leather £427
  • Three-spoke multi-function steering wheel in smooth leather (only with PCM) £329
So it looks as though the wheel you have isn't the thick-rim wheel.........(which I highly recommend!!)

The rear wiper may well spoil the lines, but unfortunately it seems to rain more often than its sunny, so it's an option not to be missed - in the wet Norff anyway![&:]
The thicker leather wheel is only £138 extra on the 997 Turbo! Wow a cost saving at last![;)]

Thanks guys; really appreciate your input. Looks like you're split down the middle!!

Is there no washer then? The only reason I wanted it was so that I could keep it clean to watch out for our friends in blue; seems somewhat redundant then, no?

If you're going fast enough to worry about the rozzers, the airflow will be keeping your window clear!

Curious... my invoice says "3 spoke sports steering wheel in leather" and I've been charged £147 for it. This is what it looks like....

I have the Price List in front of me, the sports steering wheel option 435 is standard on the "S". I think you're buying a 4S so should be no cost.

I think I said on a previous post that I wouldn't spec the wiper if I was buying new (I bought nearly new). Having said that, if you're likely to do a lot of slow driving e.g. inner city commuting, it is useful, but the rear windscreen does clear itself at "normal" driving speeds............

Mine has a sunroof too. Now that is one option I wouldn't bother with. It oscillates so much around 30 - 40 mph it makes my ears hurt!

I've had my car for about 6 months now, and haven't had any regrets about not having the rear wiper.........

Get it! My 996 is all the better for it in winter. My daily driver (CLK) drives me nuts without one!

Neil
