What do you make of this - red tail light mod.

Is it legal?
I have seen clear lenses on eBay germany, but not in UK - any pointers on this?
Cheers

I like it! Always thought the patchwork tail lights looked a bit naff.

is this the stuff? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Red-Light-Tinting-Film-Vinyl-Sheet-Not-spray-/270877176774?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3f1189b3c6

good question,
I think for the indicators it would be a very dark orange . You wouldnt be able to go over the reverse lights, as they would most definitely be red.
if I bought some I would just tape it in place before applying properly.

Reminds me of the Pin-striping that I put on my Seat Ibiza rear lights (in White!) and then on all three of my Scirrocos in Black

Painted or vinyl wrapped taillights blinks just red. Illegal in some EU countries. The only way to do red blinkers which flash amber is to make them using clear blinker lenses which are dyed the same way as 968's outer lens. Then you must have 968 style inner lens added to it. I have a pair of broken 968 lenses from which i am using inner lens. Have also clear lens set from which i am going to use blinker lenses

Would yellow bulbs work?

Red & yellow make orange.

If my logic is correct then the result would be no different or perhaps even worse. If I am correct the lenses will only allow light of red wavelength to pass through. Much in the same as we see colours because of the wavelength of light that something reflects or absorbs. At least that is what I recall from science lessons of many many moons ago. How many moons I am not prepared to divulge [:D]

I'm going to give it a go.

Just bought..

It will take a couple of weeks to arrive, but its cheap and I can always remove it if it doesn't look good.

Gents, can I suggest trying this :

http://www.lamin-x.co.uk/gallery/red.htm

A stronger bulb (LED or similar) may be needed to get enough of that original colour through, but it is doable. Friends of mine have the tinted stuff and have been through MOT's without worry (not the really dark stuff though I may add). There's bits about legality in UK here too :

http://www.lamin-x.co.uk/faq.htm#rear

As with any of this type of stuff, it's not 100% as Porsche intended, but most of the time you can get aftermarket stuff to look right and still be functional enough to be legal.

I've no affiliation with lamin-x or anyone else, just that I've been looking into it for a bit. Pics of my car will surface in the new year no doubt haha, as I'm gonna be trying this stuff myself I think.

Cheers,

Mike

Take a look here.....www.protocast.co.uk [:)]

Obviously I'm biased, but I think that clears are a better looking conversion than red tint or vinyl. Also I've never heard of any issues with clear rears from anywhere in the world. IMO for best effect, these should be fitted with chrome/silver bulbs(which flash amber)

Looks good wolfie. Like you say probably better than tinted red.

Have you got white rear fogs too? I think that would be the best combination, the whole top half of the lens clear, the bottom red.

Guys with corrado's are using red rear lights. They swear by using amber coloured led bulbs and apparently they come through as orange.

I am going to do this but just using red tinting spray.

The 968 rears were all red. How do they flash orange?

Apparently green bulbs works aswell but not as well as orange led's

No it won't work. Have tried it. Flash just red. As i wrote earlier, only 968 style solution will give the best result. All others, even, bright leds, will give red flash. Just study how factory did it with 968 and you have a glue how to make it. That's how i am going to do it.

The 968 rears were all red. How do they flash orange?

Double lenses. Outer lens is colored very fade shade of pink. In some parts it is more or less clear. Inner lens is amber with vertical red stripes. It is aligned in the way that those red stripes align with outer lenses almost clear parts. With this, it gives an illusion also outer lense is more red than it is in nature. I have broken 968 taillights from which i have taken these inner lenses.

I like the top all clear and bottom red - looks great - I have asked Procast for a quote and will let you know the price

Heres a pic of my BMW which a Merc ML used as brake assistance! You can see under the broken red light cluster BMW use a green lens under the red to create an amber indicator. I think but not certain that the bulb is also amber.

In this pic I used the red tint film (Lamin-X) to colour code just the white reversing light to match the red tail lights. It was on for two years, 74,000 miles and numerous jet washes with no issues. Just need to install well.

May inspire someone to do a good job on the their '44.
