Roll cage with diagonal - £370, without £340

OK, I have spoken to Pete who has had prices through and decided to start a new thread due to all the 'yada-yada' on the other two threads. You know what it looks like and what people have said about it, but the good news is the prices have gone down a little and the price with a diagonal is only £370. For those people who are interested, price without diagonal will be £340.

There is a very good chance that the more orders they get, the lower the price will be, but those listed above are for a batch of 3.

Now for the simple bit - if you're in, simply say so, if not, then don't worry. If there are any technical/design issues, ask and I think Pete will be along to answer.

I'm definately having one so only need 2 more interested parties!

Nice work on the price reduction [:)]

Here's a few pics from Peters original post so people can see what it looks like, and IIRC it was 2.5mm tubing so weighs around 30kg.

With diagonal? Where does this fit: Im assuming that the pictures depict a 'without' part? Was there talk of scrutineering on the other thread too?

Hi Peter, can you explain where the diagonal will fit? I'm assuming between the top hoop above the drivers head and either the top or bottom horizontal?

To start the ball rolling - if the price is right - you can put me on the list for one with a diagonal.

Cheers.

Great stuff John. Only need one more now (assuming you are happy with the price?)

I am going to discuss the diagonal position with the manufacturer on Monday. I think it will be from above the drivers head down to the corner of the harness bar. If it goes to the lower bar it will make the harness bar a two piece bar which is not the best solution.

Diagonals are for adding strength, for this to work correctly the rear stays would have to be much longer. this just seems to be a rear hoop fixed to the rear seat belt points by two arms....

Steve,

Let's not get into will it work or not, it has been discussed at length elsewhere. It is fixed to the 3 strongest points
of the car, it adds stregth to the body and it will provide considerable extra protection if things go wrong. It was not designed as a weld in cage, it was designed to give extra protection for track days/hill climbs and sprints. It can be unbolted and the car returned to normal. It is not everyones cup of tea but it does exactly what it was designed to do.

Make it so. [;)]

Mines on order with it's manufacturing slot arranged [:)].

Hopefully I will get some time at the Autosport show to choose a seat to go with it.......guess who's all excited. [:)]

John, we share exactly the same plans! Perhaps we can get a seat group buy too!?[:D] Corbeau Sprints for me I reckon, black in XL size. You?

[:D] Because it is a Porsche I think it should be a Recaro - except they are expensive.

I want a certified seat and, from previous experience, know you have to try your bum in them to ensure a comfortable but firm fit. Side baluster wear is also quite an issue (particularly if you wear jeans a lot) so I will be looking for some tough cloth in this area.

Anyone know where I can get moulded (not mouldy) rear seat delete carpet from?

Yes it's a shame Recaros are so expensive. Talk to Southbound about them as they have had a sliding mount designed and made to fit the 944 etc specifically.

The rear seat delete is tempting, but very expensive. Might have a go at knocking a simple half-box section myself one day.

Chaps,

Have a look at Motordrive seats, they would be my choice had I not got the 968 Recaros.

Alan who owns them is a Porsche guy and a realy helpful chap when it comes to seats. His range is very good and they are all certified as you would expect. He is also quite a bit cheaper than Recaro etc.

If either of you are thinking of entering Hill climb/sprint championships be careful about the rear seat delete, it is against the rules for the main 944 class. The interior must remain in and standard.

Aye"”wish I'd taken the plunge before the exchange rate did!

I'm thinking of fitting one to make more room in the back for the dog. Figured I can sell the leather back seats on eBay and recoup a little of the cash.

Autosport is the only place to look for a seat IMO. I ended up with Corbeau Sprint XL, but that was after personally sitting in everything available. I'd recommend sitting in everything and ignoring the brand as some are immensely more comfortable than others and I think comfort is second only to faith they will not fail in a crash. The Sprint was FIA approved when I bought mine, but isn't any more.

Personally I'd forget sliders and bolt the seat direct to the floor. Mine still isn't as low as I'd like it, even though to go lower would require a belly in the floor for it to sit in, and I would be pretty unhappy with a slider under there.

I'm not sure I actually like Recaros. Yes, it's a great idea, iconic name etc. but I've sat in a lot of disappointing seats and most of them had the Recaro logo on them; 968 CS being high on that list and I nearly sold my RS6 through chronic discomfort until I radically altered the way it was set up and got something I could live with.. It was never comfortable though.

I'm no upholsterer, but I got some matching lightweight carpet from Southbound (mine being linen) and covered a skanky old rear seat base I got from Simon B as I recall. The seat base weighs very little and because it's retained it blocks the worst of the transmission noise. An alternative would be to just cover the metal with lightweight carpet for virtually zero weight penalty if leaving it as bare metal is not an option. My skills are not such that i made as good a job, but it looks effectively like the Deutsche Nine product and dare I say my carpet is a better match than they show in their photo. It cost a lot less than £300 as well, which is about what that one will cost with the Pound looking like being worth less than a Euro soon.
