S.2/Turbo 'Audi style' sidelight conversion

In a idle moment, I've been tinkering with a possible conversion for the clear indicators to include an LED sidelight. I sourced some waterproof flexible LED strips which I think are just small enough to allow the lens to fit properly into the backing. Purists will hate it and I think it might look best on silver, black, white - what's general reaction?

Runs for cover and hides.......

Its a no from me as i dont like them on the audi's and having seen them fitted to other cars i think they look a bit "max power" to me !!

The Maxer Shower posse will adopt them certainly; although Im in favour of bright running lights myself (and a number of credible lamp manufacturers currently make them for retro-fitting to cars and commercials).

Sorry, that'll be a 'No' from me as well. Seeing the cars that these are often attached to, and the way they are driven, and the types that drive them, if I had an Audi with them as standard kit then I'd be thinking about a way to remove them.

They're up there with 'Body Styling Kits', chrome spinner wheels, ironing-board spoilers and ear-bleeding "ICE" systems in my book.

Having recently test driven an Audi I can confirm that next to the switch for the lights there's a smaller switch with the letters DRL for daylight running lights, so they can be easily turned off. This has irked me more as now when I see cars with them on I know how easy it is for people to turn them off, except they don't. I had previously thought that they couldn't be bothered to ferret through some complex menu system a la iDrive in BMWs

And don't get me started on people driving with their foglights on when it's not foggy.[]

Forgot to say to the OP that although I don't like them as a concept, you have clearly made a very nice job fitting LEDs to your lenses so your craftmanship is to be commended.

There's a joke about that.

But last time I told it on here the thread was removed and I was ticked-off by Mr McNulty ... ! (Paul, the scars are still healing!)

Looks like a resounding No then.....
Its a No from me, although an A+ for trying....
Ive even gone off them on the R8...

Excellent idea - If you decide to market this I'm pretty sure it will meet much success in the US.

Not for me either I'm afraid, never been keen on such leds, let alone on clear lenses (I had clear lenses this winter but fitted back the orange ones today).

I like 'em

I wouldn't want to make my car look non-standard though [:D]

Any chance of a pic with them fitted

It looks a bit odd thought but I wouldn't mind some brighter LED bulbs to replace the rather dim side lights which is a bit of a joke. Any suggestions please on replacement LED bulbs for side lights?

Thanks for the feedback chaps - pretty much as I expected and no offence taken. Peter - that was my thought...maybe one more for our friends across the pond? No real work required....I just found what I thought might work as a concept. Paul....sorry no pics fitted - I'm sure they wouldn't work on a standard S.2 in red. However on a more track orientated car of the right colour, I think they'd be okay....especially if they were

Definitely a bit Max Power/Blingtastic but hopefully not too Chav.

Here's another idea on the same vein......I happen to have some amber LED strips which could be used in conjunction with amber/silver bulbs for the indicators alone.

Then again, I could always try the white LED's with amber lenses....oooh the options are endless [:D][:D][:D]

Although I'm not a great fan myself of LED's for indicators currently, I think they they will be the future for automotive lighting.

I've been following all the threads about fixed headlights on Rennlist and the majority want ultra modern looking round lights instead of the period square ones, so I'm convinced they will go for this in a pretty big way.

I too am not a fan of the Audi fairy light look but I do like LED's. I'd like to see them orange as a replacement for the stock indicators. Also after following many an A6 on the A50 with the LED light pack option where the rear cluster are LED's I think they look great. I'd like to see a 944 cluster utilising LED, and I don't just mean replacing the current light arrangement with LED's.

Maybe you could utilise three rows of LED's, a top and bottom row of orange LED's for the indicators, and a central row of white LED's for side lights meaning you can install some nice brake ducts where the current sidelights are.

Problem is for our cars the business case simply is not there for someone to develop something and put it into production.

Hi Wolfie, I was thinking about this very idea the other day, thinking it would look pretty cool on my black car, but didn't really dwell on it for too long based on the fact I think clear lenses all round bring it up-to-date enough, without dabbling into the 'max power' zone.

P.S. Finally got some decent weather (for the sealant) and fitted my clear rears last week - love 'em! Will email you some pics soon.
