S.2/Turbo 'Audi style' sidelight conversion

Ben - glad you got the rears sorted, look forward to pics. Must say yours would make the ideal 'photo mule' and definitely better than on mine. Hadn't thought exactly how to wire them up, but I guess you could easily have them optionally on/off independently from the original sidelights. Sorry I didn't get back to you on your idea for the project - I can put you in touch with a company who I think could help if you wanted to take it further

Peter, as I'm not a known Rennlister, if you'd like to mention it in passing, it'd be interesting to hear their views.

Charles - regards LED replacements for the standard feeble sidelight bulbs, I've yet to find something worthwhile. The problem is that the bulb is mounted near horizontally which doesn't suit the directional characteristic of LED....any suggestions welcomed

I'm not completely avers to them.

I prefer running "pods down" in poor light (not dark) and the front sidelights are pretty poor in such conditions. These would probably get around that issue so I would perhaps consider them on function over form grounds.

And here's what it looks like in amber if you wanted to use the indicator function....

I sometimes drive with my front fogs on at dusk time cos I dont like to spoil shape of front with headlights up--Sorry!!!

I've spent ages trying to get the "Ëśno popup' parking lights hack to work on my car. Still no luck.

I dont like the fairly lights on the R8, I do like the idea of LEDs to replace those primitive bulbs however. Gonna do this to my dash at some point.

I'm sure directional LEDs can be diffused to produce a usable indicator bulb replacement. Ive seen christams lights that use this effect, with a 15 mil diameter ball over the LED. Theres quite a few websites (and ebay auctions) offering LED clusters in a bulb fitting with the LEDS pointing sideways.

My only concern with LEDs for exterior lights is that they use less current, on some cars this trips the bulb fail warnings but i've no idea if this applies to 944s.

I quite like the idea of them for running at dusk without the pop-ups up too, or least some variation on the theme. Bit Max power maybe but could well be interested.

Richard you're welcome to use my car as a test mule! Would certainly be interested in your contact for my 'project'!

Cheers, Ben

Funny you should say that, we've not got any side repeaters on my white car now so I'm going over tomorrow to check this and a few other bits before its MOT next week. As a temporary solution I'll be whacking in some resistors if it's a problem (which are probably heavier than the bulbs we've removed [8|] [;)]).

I've just posted a thread on Rennlist and thought it'd be fun to link to it, so far the reaction there has been incredibly positive to the lights [:D] You can find it here

Richard, you've got a PM (is the PM facility working again? I know it was playing up a while back)

A bit OT but Steve spic01 here done a great job on his sidelight conversion which has been covered before here. Much more in keeping with the timeframe of the 944 [;)]

The Audi thing looks a little 'chav' but thats only my opinion and not in any way intended to cause offence to the OP or any other person.

Fen did a similar thing only using orange indicator bulbs so not requiring the two colours.

I had a similar thought last night when, seeing a reflection of my front indicators doing their thing, I remembered that the indicator fitting is baffled so only the inner half illuminates with the indicator bulb any way.

John - I only realised that yesterday when trying to feetle the lens back into the correcet seated position. I had to slightly bend the inner reflector to stop it fouling the LED strip. I'm minded to cut it off to allow a better spread of light from the bulb across the lens. My thought was to retain the amber bulb with the amber LED strip, to prevent problem with the flasher relay.

Peter - many thanks for that, I've sent you a return mail, so seems to be working again now.

Ben - I'll P.M you my number if you want to give me a bell to discuss ' project'

Donal - No offence taken....I agree they are borderline Chav, but I think they'll work on some cars and not on others. I like Steve's take - hadn't seen it before - the only think is I can still see ginger bits [:D]

It's got to be a no vote from me too I'm afraid, but purely because I try to keep my car looking original, otherwise, I'd love the extra light they give.

Even more OT maybe, whilst thinking it's a really neat conversion, I just realised how spookily similar to fronts of the Elan M100 /S.4 Esprit they look - only in reverse....if you see what I mean

I noticed this the other day also!! What is the thinking behind the reflector being baffled? Was the rest of the light unit used for a side light in another country or something?

I'm going to de-baffle (is that a word??) mine so its one big indicator like I thought it should be [:)]

Keith R. asks an interesting question : "Do they run white with the lights on and amber when the turn signal is on?"

Is this doable?

The 2nd Lotus would look even better with chrome bulbs - I hate that fried egg look. [] [;)]

Back to the LED's - Having seen the orange ones as well it makes even more sense. How cool to have a row of white, two rows of orange and another row of white? [8D]

I'm not a lover of LEDs as running lights but, as and alternative to indicators and dim orange side lights I think there is some mileage in them.

Racing cars now have LED rear rain lights so they can't be all bad.
