Silverstone Evening August 7th

What time is this likely to end? might come along for a gander.

Can I get the car over to the centre?

Rich

Rich, the official end time will be 8pm but if it clouds over and gets really dark then they occasionally finish a bit early for bad light.

It seems so long since my last trackday I'm really looking forward to this. Will try to get there mid afternoon to watch some of the track action (if I can get away from work early) and would definately be up for a visit to the Green Man afterwards (I promise I wont miss the turning this time [:)]).
See you all there!

Can I get the car over to the centre?

Rich

Hi Rich, if you get there when the main track day is still on then parking in the diner car park is the best bet. Once the track evening starts then there should be plenty of room in the pits - hopefully we'll take over a few garages between us all.

Hi All,

Great track evening with excellent weather! Unfortunately my car sprang a small oil leak from the head gasket just above the exhaust manifold union. My misfortune was someone elses gain (did Melindi let you have the place for free John?)

Thanks to Mark K for the extended ride in his GT3RS - absolutely awesome. Amazing accelration and awesome grip. [:)]

Just getting my car fixed for August 18th now. Anybody else going to the PCGB day at Bedford?

Regards,
Andrew

Despie being full, the track looked nice and empty with plenty of space. Thanks to Peter and MarkK for giving me excellent passenger laps and getting me over my nerves since the accident. I was amazed with both cars when I found out they were both on normal road tyres [], excellent grip and balance from their suspensions

It was good to see Marcus's white 3.0L Turbo that was featured in 911&PW last year. He's made a lot of changes since then including an Autronic standalone and it was going extremely well

Really enjoyed it aswell was great to see the 44s out in force, was lots of fun and got some nice photos,I would deffo do one of the evenings again if one came up.[:)]

what a superb evening! Great to meet you all. I cant believe the pace of the 944s compared to more exotic/expensive machinery - even with a muppet like me at the wheel [:D].
There is another Silverstone evening on 21st August which is rather tempting. I think I now have the trackday bug!

Great fun, but I'm not sure half (or rather less) an evening was the way to go - none the less thanks to Andrew for letting me have his slot. I couldn't possibly divulge the arrangement I have with Melindi [8D] [;)].

I was just starting to get a feel for every thing (who I needed to let by and who would hold me up) when the evening ended. If I had got my arse in gear I might have got out before the red flag incident which would have given me more time so partly my fault.

I managed to completely cook my ContiSports in my first session (30 psi cold was perhaps not the way to go [;)]). All the tyres read 34 hot so I seem to have a good balance and dropping them to 30 psi hot seemed to keep them for longer in my second session. I did turn the front discs a nice shade of blue so it wasn't for want of trying - perhaps one day I'll go to the trouble of removing the spare wheel, boot carpet, seat backs, camera bag full of gear etc and get serious - but then I'm just there to have fun.

While I am perhaps more than a little frustrated that Beaky isn't the fastest car on the track I do take some consolation in that, on Sunday, I took the family and dog and gear for a nice day out. On Tuesday, having done no more than check the oil and screw in the tow eyes, I am thrashing him mercilessly around Silverstone. There are very few cars that will do both quite so ably considering the compromise that each role imposes. Which reminds me, I must get the aircon re gassed.

After relatively limited track time however I can agree with others comments regarding EBC Reds......they are rubbish almost to the point of being dangerous. They have little feel and spectacularly inconsistent bite and fade.

Conclusions:-

a) A track evening is a nice length of time to enjoy your car. 2 x 15 minute sessions is frustratingly short and perhaps best not done at all.

b) Changing wheels is a pain but track orientated tyres unleash much more of the cars potential for much longer per session. They are worth the hassle of changing.

I didn't see many faster cars out there than the 944's - the Radical, a Black 996 Turbo S (very quick), and a couple of GT3 RS's - MarkK's & Ted's (of Pistonheads fame). I need some more power to keep up with them - maybe a DPW & boost controller will do it [:D]. There were some other GT3's being driven very sedately.

Peter's car was going well when I followed him for a bit - there's not much in it between his car and mine, which shows what a bit of weight loss (and decent driving) can do to make up a power deficit.

Looking forward to seeing some pics - Rick?

I got about 800 pictures & I'll post on this thread when I've uploaded some.

We had all the right attendees but not all the cars together in one place for a photoshoot - WUF, LIL, C7KOE and Marcus's beast. Maybe one day it'll make a good 944 poster.

ahhh. not this time but definitely from september onwards, still bits to fix, hence wallet's face[:'(]

What a fantastic evening, and a great turn out too. [:D]

I turned up early to drool at the exotica taking part in the RMA trackday, and there were some really amazing cars taking part. Thanks to Mark for giving me a ride in two very different 911's, that really made my day.

My car ran well, which given its recent track record comes as a pleasent surprise, in fact it was almost perfect (the understeer having been cured by adjusting the rear arb) and if I wasn't ever to make any other changes I think I would still be very happy (not that there's much chance of that happening!).

I drove rather more quickly when Paul was passengering than I'd intend, so sorry if it wasn't quite the gentle reintroduction promised, but I think we did get some fun laps in.

Did anyone else come across the Integra Type R? Either he didn't want me to catch him or he spent the whole evening driving on the edge, he was leaving thick black lines into and out of every corner. Great fun to watch but I can't imagine he had any tires left at the end of the day. :ROFLMAO:

Had a wonderful run with Ed towards the end of the day and it was interesting to compare the cars, particularly as his runs similar suspension and was being very well driven. I know I need to start breaking later again and this really bought that home, but it's a mental block I need to address as I get more confidence in the car. I just need a bit more practice (that's a great excuse to go again [;)]).

I'm very keen to take part in either of the last two evenings, my front pads may be a bit low ( there so soft I'm never sure how much depth I need) so I'll probably get them changed first, but it doesn't look like I'll be able to try out my 888's yet as the T-1R's are lasting really well.

So who's up for the 21st?

Peter

Sorry - on holiday - am thinking about Cadwell on Sept 12th though

which ITR was that Peter? - the plain white one or the one that was stickered up?

I will be booking for the 21st today [:D]
Peter, I am encouraged to hear that your T-1Rs are lasting well - mine aren't! I think I need to change my driving a bit. I was going into the slow corners too quick, leading to understeer. The outer half of each front tyre is totally shredded. I will stiffen the rear a bit more for the next one and slow down a bit!

Nice one Steve, I hope to see you there.

I think it's inevitable that you will loose quite a bit of the edge of the tyre as the T-1R's are nice and soft, but learning how far you can push them will come with time. I had exactly the same wear problems on the old suspension setup, but it's now on much more aggressive camber settings and it has cured it almost completely (at the expense of tyre life on the road naturally).

I was going to suggest upping the negative camber on the front. I had very even wear on my SSRs after doing that and they should be similarly soft.

I dont have the geometry printout to hand, but I think I am running a fair amount of neg camber. When I had the KW fitted I retained the original top mounts - probably not my best decision! Over the winter I intend to fit Weltmesiter arbs and will probably fit some better top mounts, followed by another geo setup.
In any case, the main problem is me getting on the power too early in the tight corners, so better probably that I learn to drive within the limits of the car, rather than raise the limits of the car to accommodate my heavy right foot!

You can get a fair bit of -ve out of the stock adjusters but only if the bolt is not worn. I had this problem recently whereby I couldn't get more then about 1 degree on one of the fronts. With a new set of adjuster and nuts on the struts (I believe in replacing these parts as a wear item on heavily used cars) I got over 2 degrees -ve.
