Silverstone Track Evenings

ORIGINAL: Peter Empson

.....I'm not that keen on the National circuit myself, it's over to soon and the long straight makes it a bit featureless. .....

What long straight? You need a Turbo [:D]

I just consider it an opportunity to go around Copse more frequently - the only corner at Silverstone of any real worth.

I dunno 'bout that [;)], Stowe is a lot of fun if you're really committed and Bridge was excellent a few years ago as I used to be able to do it flat, just. It made getting back over to the other side of the track in time for the following left hander a bit tricky too as the suspension had to settle. Sadly I have to back off on entry now as I'm going a bit quicker.

I think you're being a bit harsh John - Abbey is very satisfying when you get it right, Bridge is good (And with elevation change [;)]), and I struggle to get the best line through Maggots/Beckets etc..

I could do without the Brooklands / Luffield bit though

fingers crossed I will be able to do a few of these. Currently the Porsche fund is rather empty as I walked out of a pretty well-paying job before xmas and havent actually earnt any money since. Trivial I know, but my dear wife may be slightly less understanding if I start blowing my depleting savings on Porsche stuff!

Booked in for June 2nd and July 14th. Yes, the idiot in a blue 924 holding you all up will be me.

Haven't been on Silverstone for about 20 years, can't wait...

Hi Peter, just noticed this, did you do anything about bulk cost, I would like to go if there some spaces left, July 14th.
regards Mike

Hi Mike,
To be honest I hadn't as there didn't seem to be that much interest so far, but since you've reminded me I'll get in contact and see if there's anything they're able to offer.

Right, I've just heard back from Melindi and she will do July the 14th at £129 [:D] She's also going to get Calum to bring along his 968CS too.

She's said she wont be in the office till Tuesday the 31st, but I guess you can reserve a place before then, just say you're with the 944/968's when booking.

Melindi has now given me the promotion code that can be entered into their web thingy to get the cheaper price. I'm not sure if I should publish this in public, so best to email me for it through my profile (although I'm sure Melindi would have something to say to anyone that abused this offer [:D]). You can of course still phone your order through without this code.

My emails (and also my internet connection) are a bit squiffy at the moment, so there might be a short delay replying.

I'll try to update the thread with a list of attendees soon. I'm informed there are still plenty of spaces left, so there's no excuse for missing out [:D] Go on, you know you want to...

Well the weather report for tomorrow looks a little iffy, but as long as there are no rivers across the track then I'm still looking forward to it. As far as I'm aware there'll be 3 of us there, myself, AndrewS and Simon D. Cant wait [:D]

Well last night went very well. 944's were represented by myself and Simon D's track car, there was also a 968 (who at one point refused to move over for a couple of laps [8|]) and a good mix of road and race cars, many less than you normally see on a Silverstone evening meaning there was plenty of space if you could get away from the queues caused by the ill mannered minority.

The evening started with some drizzle making the track unbelievably slippery for the first few laps, but this went away quickly and I started to get back into the rhythm. After Oulton I was rather concerned with the cars setup, it was acting rather strangely there but at Silverstone it was fine. Ollie at RPM had made a few tweaks for me which seemed to have worked. It now has only a trace of understeer and none of the twitchy instability. The oil pressure is getting a bit too low, I saw 2.5 bar down Hangar Straight before I brought it in to cool down, I think I'll soon be looking for a spare bottom end to start a build, it used a litre and a half of oil, most of which I've just washed off the back of the car.

I did get some video, but I think it's all pretty uneventful, sadly the camera battery ran out before the 4th session so I missed taping some clear faster laps.

Numpty of the day went to the driver of an RS6, someone has already uploaded an example of his driving on youtube, I reported him for a seperate bit of bad driving and the organisers acted very promptly. Rumour has it that he then went on to drive the Gallardo Spider that was there, we heard a massive tank slapper around Copse on the first lap and the engine gave up on the second, it was apparently a courtesy/demo car from a Lambo dealer... It did sound nice though!

Whopsey! Very loose lines and finally into the kitty litter!

To be fair it had some poke on the straights, but anyone can do that! I'm going to try to make one of the evenings in July, it looks great fun.

I think I might be interested in joining you guys at one of these trackdays. I'm doing a novice day at Bedford first.

Those RS6's are something else for straight line speed!
