So my interest is growing for a 944

I think i have an idea of what I want now.. A S2 944 mainly because of the more stylish looking interior, lame but I have to sit behind the wheel and look at it lots, i don't look at the out side much!!

So can I get an S2 for £3000?

2.5lt is more than enough and leather is also high on the list.

Miles any thing from 80,000-140,000

Cam belts done and some service history

Clean ish but not perfect that's my job to do over the next few months..

having seen asmall number of S2's for £3000 and one very nice one they are out there but at £3k it's not a flood of them..

over to you boys to tell me what to avoid and what look for. What area's are best checked??

Insurance would be a 6th car[&:] so will be more of a car to be used when we feel like it.. ( although I think I should sell on of my 912's )
 
I think you're mixing up the S2 and the '85 facelift.

All S2's have a 3.0 engine, not a 2.5. The turbo remained a 2.5 however.

The 'oval dash' came in 85 on the then 944/Lux and remained throughout production. Any S2 is 1989 or later.

 
yes I am getting mixed up then.. but it's all new and I need to learn..

I wouldn't be too worried about a 3ltr I guess

 
Yeah, your choice is between a late model (referred to as "˜oval dash') 944 Lux or a 944 S2. The S2 is a 3 litre and will cost you quite a lot more. They have the same interior, but externally there are differences. The S2 shares the Turbo's modernised front bumper/lights and has the bridge spoiler at the back.

To complicate matters, there's also a 944 S, between the two, but those were not in production for long and so aren't seen as often.

I have a 1987 2.5l 944 Lux for sale within your budget, if you're interested. I'm planning to put it on eBay, Pistonheads, etc, but you could jump the gun! Metallic black with full leather black interior. It's not perfect, but the interior is the one of the best you'll see anywhere. Drop me your email address if you'd like a detailed rundown and photos, I haven't got around to advertising it anywhere yet.
 
Fair enough, I stand corrected.

I knew the early Turbos had rubber spoilers, with only post-'90 models having the bridge spoiler, but thought the S2 had been fitted with it all along. My mistake.
 
I suspect that they all got them at the same time.

I know that bridge spoilers on S2's are about as rare as bridge spoilers on Turbos!

The S2 had to wait another year after the Turbo got the bridge. No point wasting the nice new kit on the poor sibling when there was still a stock of old rubber ones available, eh Helmut? [:D]

Further to the recent posts on Titanic I am busily convincing myself that the S2 is NOT the poor sibling and that I don't want one.

The bridge spoiler was often colour-coded to match the main body paint. The rubber spoiler was always black.
 
Ahh, but only on the 968 was the bridge body-coloured by Porsche. The S2 SE may have been body colour also, but that was a Porsche GB model rather than a proper factory one.
 
In terms of day-to-day drivability, which is preferred: the Turbo or S2? Is the Turbo significantly more expensive to maintain/service?
 
In standard form the S2 is the nicer road car and hardly any slower than a Turbo

Maintenance wise they are really on a par with eachother.

If you have a Turbo and get lured into improving it then install deep pockets beforehand [:D]
 
Must say I am probably in a minority of one but overall I do prefer the rubber spoiler to a bridge spoiler. To me the bridges do just look like a bolt on after market accessory that doesnt really suit the car.
