Sportier Sound

This mod sounds too good to miss.
Does anybody have a spare airbox to sell incase i make a mess of mine ?

PS Big Dave, as Neil says it will be interesting to know your findings re the sound & performance differences once you've properly tested it. Not ideal weather currently im sure.
 
I want to get my car out, But its just WAY too gritty + wet round here at present...
As soon as ive had it out, ill let you know...
Although im not expecting much in the way of power gains. Im guessing itl be noisier on the intake "growl" though...[;)][:D]
 
Rob. Ive still got the bits i cut off the tubes. They have the part no,s on.. Ill dig them out in the morning + let you know...

Im pretty sure they were L99AB,s aprox 45mm.
Buy the time youve cut a 2" hole in the box [hole saw], they should just sit in nicely...
I had to trim the airbox fins down to make the job neat. Then hot glued the tubes in, after cutting them down...

OK I think i too will get some of these ordered.

So just to be sure here's what i understand to be the correct course of action.

(1) Remove Airbox
(2) Drill 4 x holes in exact locations as documented
(3) Cut down the Maplin tubes so they are merely the same thickness as the airbox itself & glue into place.
(4) Was there something about discarding the fin/flap at the entrance of the airbox ??
(5) Re-Fit
(6) Test & Enjoy

Does this sound about right?

There is a Snorkel that connects onto the front of the airbox, I believe this bit is binned. Some rubber thing as well but I am sure it will all be clear with that article in hand and the front of the car in view.

P.S. I got a glue gun but had to order in the tubes, just need to clear it with the insurance next and buy a hole saw.
 
Would be interesting to see what the insurance say. My insurance company didn't charge me when I fitted a Promax chip, so I would not expect any issue here.

DONT bin the snorkel.. You never know if you might need it again....In fact NEVER bin anything....Porsche parts are expensive....As if "we" didnt know that already...[;)][8|][;)]
 
At the heavily 968 attended trackday at Donington last year (could have been July-time), I would say that about 90% of the cars had the ports fitted in the front of the airbox with intake pipe removed - certainly suggests it has an advantageous effect noticable on a circuit. I'd expect they all had K&N replacement filter elements to complete the package.

Guess a spare airbox is the way to go, then at least the car can be returned to original spec if required. Would still be interested to know what percentage of the gain the holes under the box method gives, but for me any mods and necessary trips to a rolling road will have to wait until after our house extension is paid for!!

Mine was one of the cars "on track" at this gathering..And mine didnt have this airbox mod...
It does now though...
Still dont know what difference its made, as ive yet to drive the car.. Its been REALY c##p weather lately...[8|][8|][8|]
 
Maybe a little late in on this, but if you put the holes in the bottom of the airbox, and through the lower plastic "flap" air can be drawn from the cold air flow infront of the radiator, rather than from inside the engine bay. It also makes the mod invisable from the engine bay.
 
That is an option Pete.
BUT the holes in the lower part wont be as big...
And the cold air can get into the front holes as the snorkel hole is now larger....
And its easier to do in the front.[8|][;)][8|][;)][:D]
But like you say. Its another option..
 
I'm with you Pete, I like the idea of the mod being invisible.

Having looked inside the airbox, I reckon you could make a long slot just broken up by the stiffening ribs in the bottom of the box, so that should be close to the same size as the four round holes. Nothing stopping you taking off the original intake pipe as well to see if that makes any further difference...

Bring on the good weather so we can try some of these things!!!
 

Before I make a mess of everything, Mr Risk-Averse is after some tips for removal of the airbox - especially the rubber mountings securing it at the back.

It looks like I can just pull the grommets out of the holes they sit in, but is it easy to get them reseated afterwards?

It might be wise to "lubricate" the gromets, before just "pulling"..
Sometimes they split, and can be a little difficult to re-install...
A small flat bladed screwdriver could help to "encourage" them in + out...

For rubber components I managed to find a grease specifically for rubber, Castrol Red Rubber Grease, it's supposed to give the rubber a longer life.

Dave's right these can split, and also about using a small screwdriver, as the grommet is hollow at the bottom I found that using a small screwdriver, if you can get it through the metal hole, to kind of fold in one side of it into it's centre is the best bet and pop it out.
 
Or you could do it in the bottom, air pushed throught the lower PU is directed upwards by the plastic cowling in front of the radiator.
