Sportier Sound

"Castrol Red Rubber Grease".
Good stuff is that. + yes it is,,,, red...
I used it back in May last year when i re-furbed my Sport...Made all the rubber suspension bits slide together easy....
I got mine from the MG car club....Via the "net"...
 
Did a quick reccy today on removal of the airbox. Looks pretty straight forward except for a confusing rubber mounting on the right hand side (when looking from the front) any idea how to remove it without damaging it ?
 
Spray with some lube, wd40 etc , then prise out gently with a small flat bladed screwdriver. Have fun..
 
Well, took a day off on Friday and decided to have a go at the airbox.

I'm quite pleased with the result (haven't managed to take the car out for a test drive yet though).

I've left the snorkel on for the moment, as I prefer the look, and I figure with another 4 massive holes in the 'box it won't make too much difference and the overall effect has to be better than it was before.

I also took the opportunity to fit some domed mesh round the new holes, just to stop things like leaves potentially clogging up the airbox.

I think the overall result looks quite nice. Just have to test it now!.

nice work Rob, I've held off doing mine because I didn't want the unprotected holes(even though nothing much should get in from the engine bay). What are the mesh domes off.

You'll laugh....I spent ages looking for something like this - thinking of the gauze mesh that you'll see on the intake trumpets of racing cars - and there are a few suppliers, but they cost fortunes!

After a bit of a brainwave, the dome actually started life as a tea strainer from Wilkinson's (59p!)..

Remove the handle, turn it inside out (as it hides the cut-out for the handle), bit of primer and satin black paint and Bob's your uncle!

I used the trusty hot-glue gun to fix them to the trim rings, and they're pretty much an exact match for size.

I know it sounds a bit Heath Robinson (well a lot Heath Robinson), but I wanted something to keep any big debris out and it will absolutely do that job. I can always return the car to factory spec with a spare airbox if I need to.

Nice work Rob - years ago I had a Yamaha TZR 250 with the fastest tea strainers in the south east of England - similar idea, used them on the carb intakes to stop much being pulled in.

Test Results....

Well the car certainly sounds faster! In town and at light to medium throttle openings, and cruising on the motorway, there's no perceivable difference from standard, but when you stand on the loud pedal, you get a real throaty growl, which for me anyway, adds to the pleasure of driving the car.

It's probably the sound that make the car seem faster to me, but subjectively, it does seem to run better.

I heat-soaked the mod by idling the car for 20 minutes, and the airbox does get quite warm in these conditions, and probably more-so on a summer's day. Unfortunately that does affect the hot-melt glue. I think the clue is in the name (doh)! Not that it melted, but it was softer and I found that when I pulled at the mesh filters, three out of four came away from the plastic airbox trim-rings. So I need to find some alternative fixing method for the mesh filters - perhaps something like araldite or similar high-strength adhesives.

The good news is that when the glue is warm you can peel it off easily without it leaving any marks.

Ideas welcome...

how about the small plastic cable clips, I think you can get them in black, take out the small tack and use a very small self tapping screw.
